Bob is here. Please begin firing away with any questions you have!
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 9:46:29 AM)
Did you see JoePa on Saturday? He is tougher than a boot. I think James' and Flutie's comments were atrocious, don't those guys have parents and grandparents?. Do you think Coach will be on the sidelines Saturday?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 9:48:54 AM)
Well remember, Craig made more money while in college than he does at ESPN :) so I doubt he cares. I think Joe has rubbed some media folks the wrong way over the years and some of them like when things happen that make him look bad. The guy is college football, I am a traditionalist, so I give him all the respect in the world. I would think guys like james and Flutie would as well, apparently not
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 9:49:03 AM)
Any players really step to the forefront in the Pennsylvania high school playoffs this weekend?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 9:50:40 AM)
Two juniors are really doing well Terrelle Pryor. pryor is one of the top five players I have seen in the state over the past 15 years. Cameron Saddler who is the unheralded teammate of Shayne Hale continues to light up scoreboards. Pat Bostick threw six TD passes in a final league game Friday night
DaveBiddle (Nov 6, 2006 9:51:08 AM)
How has Evan Blankenship played this year Bob? (question from CDiddy70)
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 9:51:45 AM)
Pryor is up there with the likes of Sean Gilbert, Lavar Arrington, Darrelle Revis and Justin king pretty lofty company in my opinion
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 9:53:06 AM)
Evan is hot and cold. He looks great at times and at other times you can see where he needs to work on his conditioning. Which is the same for most high school linemen who play both ways. He as I have said before is a very good run blocker who struggles in space at times
DaveBiddle (Nov 6, 2006 9:53:14 AM)
What are OSU's chances of landing Howie Long's son, Kyle Long? (question from expresbflc)
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 9:55:31 AM)
Well I am not of the bells, whistles and winks club like some here. i know Kyle likes OSU, Kyle also likes baseball a great deal. He likes UVA and those folks are like family to him. He is tight with Brewster and Adams, but he is alos tight with kids UVA has recruited. Kyle is a momma's boy and he has stated as much to us. I see it being more of a battle than people think. I won't say he won't be a Buckeye but he is far from a lock right now
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 9:55:38 AM)
Penn State has invested a lot in Morelli this year. Do you see that paying dividends down the road?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 9:57:26 AM)
No, to be honest with you. PSU wasted his redshirt which in my opinion was a mistake. He is good, but Pat Deevlin is the future
DaveBiddle (Nov 6, 2006 9:57:30 AM)
I am going to post these questions together...
calibuck (Nov 6, 2006 9:57:34 AM)
Bob...do you think Terrelle Pryor is the OSU QB target for the 08 class?
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 9:57:38 AM)
Does Terrelle Pryor have a list of college favorites yet?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 9:59:56 AM)
at 6-6/215 I would think TP is not done growing as of yet, so he may outgrow the QB position. I haven't see enough of him throwing to verify that he is a D-I QB. He is a great athlete who I love on defense personally. Pryor is looking at everyone, but OSU, Pitt, PSU, Clemson are a few he has mentioned to me. My guess is he stays close to home, because his father is disabled
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:00:10 AM)
What is happening to Iowa? I like Ferentz, but have believed he is a little overhyped by the media because they always want someone in the Big Ten to topple the Big Two. Do you look at Ferentz as an elite coach?
calibuck (Nov 6, 2006 10:01:38 AM)
Let me expand on edbuck51's question...does Ferentz deserve the acclaim the media gives him?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:02:42 AM)
Iowa is a good program and a program that will once in a while challenge for or win the Big Ten. I don't personally see it as a OSU/Michigan type program yet. Ferentz is a great coach, who could command a lot of dollars in the open market. Success in this business is measured in results and before I bestow greatness on a head coach I want to see him win a National Championship.
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:02:49 AM)
Do you see Brewster and Adams as being Buckeye locks?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:04:07 AM)
Adams I do, Brewster seems like a good bet, but its November so I can't say anyone is a lock and I will rarely if ever even use that word. Things happen in this game and you just never know
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:04:16 AM)
Where do you rank B.Martin on your list of defenders in the Midwest?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:05:53 AM)
Ben is top five in the Midwest, he has such great potential at the next level. Eugene Clifford is right the with him, but Martin has a very high ceiling. I think Martez Wilson has a slight bit more, but it is close
calibuck (Nov 6, 2006 10:05:59 AM)
Bob..I think you dodged edbuck51's question a bit. Based on his'record' does Ferentz deserve the aclaim and the big bucks. It seemshe has not consistently performed. Thoughts?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:07:57 AM)
Yes and no Cali, I mean that is a very broad question. With what Ferentz has done with the program in his time there, yes he is deserving of some acclaim. It may be blown out of proportion a bit, but I don't think its undeserved, They aren't having a great year, but usually Iowa is a team that no one in the Big ten wants to play when they are rolling.
littaguy (Nov 6, 2006 10:08:14 AM)
While no one would argue DL is OSU number 1 area of need this year, the TE position concerns me. Does OSU have a legitimate shot of landing Gronkowski?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:09:53 AM)
They do, Rob has mentioned them to me as a team he likes. Clemson and OSU are always two of the first teams he mentions. There aren't a lot of good TE's out there this year from what I have seen that are available anyway. I figured they would have got on Aaron hernandez
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:10:06 AM)
Do you think the Bucks are in play for Martez Wilson?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:10:47 AM)
Next year there will be a few decent TE's in-state like Kyle Rudolph and Nic DiLillo, are they OSU type kids I'm not sure yet.
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:12:15 AM)
Personally, my guess has been for the past few months that Tez is headed for Illinois. Yes, I may be crazy but from some of the things I have heard it has me thinking he stays at home. OSU is a player, how much of a player is tough to speculate exactly because he never really gives you the impression as to which way he is really looking
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:13:17 AM)
Would you say at this point Rory Nichol is where you would have projected him, better than projected, or is a little behind projections?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:13:36 AM)
I'm waiting until Thursday, if you see Arrelious Benn announce for Illinois, I think you may see a domino effect take place for Ron Zook.
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:15:17 AM)
Rory came out right before I really started. A lot of the so-called experts blew him up and probably never really saw him play. Rory was always a solid kid, who would be a contributor but I never really saw that star TE that some blew him up to be. He is a quality kids who is a very good player, elite? No, but solid
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:15:28 AM)
Who would you say of players still on the board this year will be OSU's biggest coupe on the recruiting scene?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:16:32 AM)
Ben Martin I would say, just because most wrote him off as going to South Bend
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:17:36 AM)
Rutgers or Louisville? What are your impressions of Coach Schiano? Seems like one of the good guys to me.
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:17:44 AM)
Obviously, Ant Davis or O'Dowd would be coups as well, but I would still take Martin because he is an in-state kid that most pegged for ND
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:19:53 AM)
Greg is a good guy who has weathered the storm at Rutgers and built his program his way. It's great for his staff, the school and the fans in Piscataway and the Big East needed another team to step it up. Louisville is a great team, they have a well-balanced offense and so many athletes on defense. With a healthy Mike Bush I honestly believe they could have competed for a NC. I'm going with Louisville in that game by 14
DaveBiddle (Nov 6, 2006 10:20:20 AM)
Bob, what's your prediction of OSU-Michigan?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:21:52 AM)
As I stated in the recruiting round-up here on Bucknuts back in July The Buckeyes will win this game and will win the National Championship. It should be a great game, but I can't change my mind now. I'm sure no one will remember my prediction, but me but I did make it...lol
DaveBiddle (Nov 6, 2006 10:23:57 AM)
Bob, what are your impressions of Tressel as a recruiter?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:26:01 AM)
If you asked me that last year, I would have said good, but he needs to work quicker on those in-state kids. Now, this year he has done that. he covered all his bases. He came out of the gate strong with Nate Oliver and kept it rolling. They went out and and that to me is the #1 sign of a great recruiter and a championship program
mckbuckeye (Nov 6, 2006 10:26:27 AM)
Bob - Late in - any news on O'Dowd or Davis on OL?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:26:36 AM)
They have basically gotten every kid they wanted in-state, Ben Martin would be the icing on the cake
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:27:49 AM)
I haven't talked to Ant in about two weeks, and O'Dowd is out of my region so I don't hear much about him.
mckbuckeye (Nov 6, 2006 10:29:27 AM)
Bob - Since the FL teams are having so much "trouble" this year - any big hauls from that state to OSU?
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:31:12 AM)
Florida seems to be doing ok...Most of the big time Florida kids all seem to wait and take all their visits or most of them anyway. So I'm putting that as a wait and see item.
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:31:19 AM)
Do you think Tressel, coming from D-1AA, that it has taken him a little longer to learn the D-1 recruiting game than other aspects of being a head coach? Doesn't it seem like he is starting to recruit a little better nationally? Obviously, winning helps recruiting, but there is more to it than W's and Ls.
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:34:25 AM)
Winning always helps and OHio State for the msot part is one of those teams that recruits itself. There are similarities between recruiting at both levels, yet it is very different. I think each year that Tress has been in Columbus you have and will continue to see it improve as he and his staff become better acclimated to it. Recruiting nationally is great, it is also full of up's and downs and raises the expectations each year. I think Ohio is a strong enough state and if you can be dominant in Ohio and then sprinkle a few kids from surrounding areas into the mix you have a program that will be competitive for the long run ala USC
edbuck51 (Nov 6, 2006 10:36:35 AM)
The SEC has three one loss teams and two two loss teams out of 12. The Big Ten has two undefeated teams (#1 and #2), nad a one loss team, out of 11. Is the SEC really the end all be all? The Big Ten is definitely not having it's best season, but I'm not sure the SEC is unbeatable either (just ask Georgia).
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:40:22 AM)
Trust me I hear plenty on a daily basis about how great the SEC is and how bad the Big Ten is. I don't think anyone in Athens was saying that last year after WVU walked into georgia's backyard and smacked them in the mouth. I think each year you will always have one or two teams in each BCS conference that can play with anyone. To try and compare the conferences or say this conference is better than this conference is ridiculous and total speculation to me it is a waste of breath. I am one of the folks who is strongly in favor of a playoff system in D-I, and that to me is the only way you will ever have a true national champion. Settle it on the field I say.
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:41:06 AM)
That should be how bad the Big East* is and Northern football in general**
DaveBiddle (Nov 6, 2006 10:41:33 AM)
Bob, thanks for stopping by today and sharing your knowledge. And thanks to everyone for the great questions. Over and out!
BobLichtenfels (Nov 6, 2006 10:42:03 AM)
Thanks for having me folks..Always a pleasure..
