GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:09:21 AM)
Round two of the high school playoffs begin tonight. I'll be at the Nordonia and Olmstead Falls game tonight and the double header at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:10:13 AM)
Olmstead Falls has a great QB in Tyler Sparks and Nordonia has my Mr. Football pick...Jordan Mabin.

StPeteBuckeye (Nov 10, 2006 10:11:25 AM)
Who are you predicting for wins?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:11:25 AM)
Hi St. Pete...tonight I'm going with Nordonia who will have a difficult challenge against Olmstead Falls. It will be interesting to see if Mabin can have a big game against this defense.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:12:58 AM)
Tomorrow I like Glenville (shocking!) to successfully avenge thier only loss to Mentor in week one and I like Nate Oliver and the St. Edward Eagles, maybe big, over my neighboring Warren G. Harding Raiders and Danny Herron.

redondo (Nov 10, 2006 10:14:25 AM)
Gary - This Chris Wells fumbling issue that we see reports about going back to high school. Why was there no talk or observation of this before when he was in h.s.? Thank you.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:14:25 AM)
Hi redondo...I saw Wells play quite a few games in high school over the past three years and I don't remember any fumble epidemic that Coach Sax alluded to. He cramped up on occasion and that was the only real negative thing I saw about him.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:15:55 AM)
Just keep feeding him the ball. He'll get over his fumble-itis. My gosh...he was anxious to make a huge play against Illinois and simply dropped the ball. Get him right back in the action. He's too important in short yardage.

ohs (Nov 10, 2006 10:19:27 AM)
jeff cumberland looked great for ILL last wk, and they got this 5 star WR to go with juice, going to be good if they get Brent.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:19:27 AM)
Hi ohs...there was never any question about whether Cumberland was going to be good, the question with him always was how is he going to be eligible...and then stay eligible. I was happy to see him out there performing. Good for him. I don't know him as well as some of the other guys I've covered but I've spoken with him enough and watched him play and practice to know that he's a special talent. Benn really gives them another top receiving talent. They could be a real formidable offense down the line. Who is going to get Brent? Maybe OSU ...maybe Illinois? I don't have insight to offer there sorry.

SteveHelwagen (Nov 10, 2006 10:21:38 AM)
Gary, question on the board about Jermale Hines and what the holdup may be with him. Any insight there? I'll hang up and listen (ha ha).

Poz79 (Nov 10, 2006 10:23:41 AM)
Hi Gary. Who's your favorite in-state junior LB? I know there are several to pick from, how many do you think OSU will take?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:23:41 AM)
Hi Poz...I like the upside of Staples probably as much as any of the other linebackers out there. I think Nick Schneider is being over looked but I'm not sure he has enough foot speed. I like Michael Zordich a lot but I'm not sure he has enough sideline to sideline footspeed. I think Devoe Torrence is terrific but he can play linebacker or running back. People like Beachum at linebacker but I think he's going to be a really good running back as well. Right now he's a better running back. I only saw Nathan Williams once but others speak highly of him. Jamiihr Williams from Lima has a lot of potential also. I'll go with Staples and Torrence right now.

byars (Nov 10, 2006 10:26:01 AM)
was Illinios #1 able to keep up with Teddy last week? Is #1 really good? How is Teddy's toe?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:26:02 AM)
I just don't know what happened to the offense last week period. As far as I know Teddy's toe is doing fine. I just don't know how or why you don't do whatever it takes to get TGII the ball 15 times a games by hook or by crook???

mp23 (Nov 10, 2006 10:29:23 AM)
Sorry im late so forgive me if this has been asked before. With the struggles last week do we come out and try and run the ball all game or do we practice the pass. my concern is that another sub par performance in the running game might damage their confidence. I know we need balance but It seems the running game really needs some work.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:29:23 AM)
Hi mp23...we're all late today so you fit right in...no problem. I think Ohio State should come out and run the ball to reestablish a flow and regain their confidence then slowy but surely reintroduce the pass into the offense. Ohio State needs to run the ball to beat Michigan and you need Pittman and Wells to be playing well going into the Michigan game which neither of them really are right now.

whoisville? (Nov 10, 2006 10:33:13 AM)
so did anyone ask these two questions for that guy on the thread that wanted them asked? if so dont post, if not, answer please. Is Jermale Hines simply waiting for a valid test score for that elusive offer or are there going to be 0 G-ville players taken this year. 2) What do you make of the BCS after this weekend with Lousiville losing?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:33:13 AM)
Hi whoisville...I think OSU is the one waiting for Jermale Hines to get that necessary test score before they extend him an offer. They were painted behind the 8 ball last year offering Small a scholarship without a qualifying score for their standards and they obviously aren't going to put themselves in that same situation again. Hines will wait as he tries to improve his test score and when the offer comes...he will be a Buckeye. Hines is a top five talent in Ohio...just watch him tomorrow if you want to see for yourself. And he's really not a bad quarterback at all....not at all. He's not great but he's pretty good. He's too good of a football player not to take this year if he gets the requisite score.

MacAuley says BuckeyesBy24 (Nov 10, 2006 10:36:33 AM)
Gary - Thanks for taking the time for today's chat. Late to the party, don't know if this has been asked yet. I know there's plenty of football left (thank goodness), but given last night's Louisville - Rutgers game, how do you see the BCS Championship gane playing out? (Assuming that the Buckeyes win the next two.)

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:36:33 AM)
The Big East is pretty much a joke...they've proven that the past two weeks. They're out period. They don't even deserve an automatic BCS bid. I wouldn't mind seeing Texas finish number two and have a rematch because they're much better with Colt McCoy now, as is OSU, but they have that cornerback back now as well. But I don't see a rematch likely with them or Michigan so I'm guessing that Florida could likely be the one if they win out or even USC if they win out. I don't believe ND will be there even if they win out. But if Michigan beats OSU then Texas is in play big time. OSU is out!

Poz79 (Nov 10, 2006 10:39:27 AM)
Gary, through the people you know with ties to Warren Harding have you heard any updates on Mario Manningham's health?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:39:28 AM)
Mum has been the word. It's been that way with Danny Herron as well this year. I know that Herron has been battling an injury since the start of the season, but I just don't know how bad it was. He looks to be healthy now but I'm guessing the knee was responsible for the very slow start. As far as Manningham is concerned, everyone I've spoken to says he should be fine by the time OSU comes around. It was shocking to see he had zero catches last week but I didn't see their game at all. I'll check more this week leading up to the game.

ohs (Nov 10, 2006 10:42:26 AM)
who is next commit?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:42:26 AM)
Well the ACT scores should be available soon and if Solomon Thomas did well enough on it I'm guessing he would come right out and commit. The michigan game might generate a commitment or two...probably silent commitments. I'm going to give Dionte Allen a call this week to see what he's thinking right now. I think OSU is in play for him so depending on when and if they play next week...he might be at the game. I don't know who is next to commit.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:43:52 AM)
It should be a treat to watch Nate Oliver play against Danny Herron on Saturday. I think Ed's just has too much overall talent for Harding but you can't count out Thom McDaniels and the Raiders against John Gibbons.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:46:08 AM)
What's interesting in this game is that I believe it was Frank Edmonds who was the illegal transferee in the game against Harding during the regular season a few years back that caused the Eagles to forefit half of their wins that season.

whoisville? (Nov 10, 2006 10:47:55 AM)
Do you think the commitment of Benn to Illinois will/could lead to us losing out on Brent? Martez Wilson?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:47:56 AM)
I sure do. And maybe even Hughes. I remember seeing Hughes and Wilson together after the Nike combine at OSU so I'm sure they've talked about going to school together. And now that Wilson won't get in at ND...he could stay home and play for Illinois. I'll bet they're all working on him to go there.

ohs (Nov 10, 2006 10:49:02 AM)
is Boone going to be 100% next wk?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:49:02 AM)
I believe he will be or at least he thinks he will be. I was told he could play tomorrow if it was the Michigan game.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:52:24 AM)
It's interesting to see that Massillon is still right in the thick of things and they can certainly win their region. I don't know how good Brunswick is for being 11-0 but I'm guessing that McKinley won't have it easy tomorrow night and I'm guessing that Massillon will win. I think Ed's and Glenville will play for their region and Ed's will likely win that game so there could be semifinal rematch up north between Ed's and Massillon. Colerain and X will be a classic matchup their region next week.

whoisville? (Nov 10, 2006 10:54:51 AM)
so you dont think we will get Brent?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:54:51 AM)
Geez I don't really know to be honest with you. I think Barksdale and Brent would be two solid pickups and I'm all but certain that Barksdale is on board. I think a win against Michigan could push Brent over the edge to OSU. So yeah I'll say Brent ends up a Buckeye but I don't have any first-hand knowledge to go with that. I haven't spoken to Brent myself.

ohs (Nov 10, 2006 10:56:47 AM)
do you see us pulling out a bunch of new plays for Mich?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:56:47 AM)
No if anything the sweater vest will get a little tighter. I think OSU has already used the kitchen sink with the number of reverses they've already thrown out there.

whoisville? (Nov 10, 2006 10:58:32 AM)
does anyone come close to beating Mooney in that division this year?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 10:58:32 AM)
No one will come close to Mooney. Coldwater could be there again in the finals but Mooney will have their way with them this time. Mooney is really good!

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:02:13 AM)
I like Danny McCarthy a lot but if you asked me which QB I'd rather take between him and Hines...I'd go with Hines. Now neither of them is going to end up at the position at the next level although someone would take Hines if he wanted to play that position...and he likes playing quarterback...but athletically I would take Hines over McCarthy at quarterback. Glenville's staff will certainly tell you that Hines could play QB at the next level. He's strong, fast and has a really nice arm. But I would take Hines in a minute and then worry about where to play him later. But I'll take McCarthy too and then worry about where to play him later also.

ohs (Nov 10, 2006 11:05:12 AM)
thanks Gary, I meant new plays, like shot ginn and other tricks, like roy hall more like tyree last year?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:05:12 AM)
It was around this time last year that tyree started playing tight end or at least when I remember him playing tight end. I don't really see Hall being like Tyree in that manner. But I don't really think you'll see a lot of tricks out of JT at this time of year including Teddy in the shot ginn.

whoisville? (Nov 10, 2006 11:06:29 AM)
How would Mooney do in DI

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:06:29 AM)
I think teams like Ed's and Colerain who are just as physical would rough them up a bit. But they would give them a game no question. They beat Harding and Harding is in the second round of the playoffs.

MacAuley says BuckeyesBy24 (Nov 10, 2006 11:10:08 AM)
How 'bout a Shot-Ginn formation, a pitch to Ginn and a throw back to Troy Smith? How about 3 WRs and a single back with Troy under center, then on the audible, Pittman goes wide and Troy Smith drops bak to a shit gun?

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:10:08 AM)
Hi MacAuley...I truly thought that they should have been doing that since spring ball last year. Ginn should have been Reggie Bush-like this year. Now with two games remaining, it's just win baby. Ginn is gone after the bowl game so it is what it is. I would love to see him get a couple more punt returns at least...I think 8 is the NCAA record for a career by Antonio Perkins who's still with the Browns now I think.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:11:50 AM)
Anything else on your mind...my travel agenda isn't as crazy today as its been recently so I'm in no big hurry today. But I do have to get ready to leave soon.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:14:43 AM)
Sorry about the mix up today. We got started late but I want to thank those of you who stuck around for the chat. I'm looking forward to seeing Tyrell Sutton tomorrow. As many of you know he was one of my favorites at the high school level and I'm so glad that he's doing so well for himself at Northwestern now. Good for him. He's a fine young man and I continue to wish him nothing but the best. Him, Pittman and Wells are three great ambassadors for the city of Akron and all are pretty darn good running backs.

whoisville? (Nov 10, 2006 11:15:12 AM)
just this....thanks for all the time you put in Gary!

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:15:12 AM)
Thank you...I appreciate the kind words.

GaryHousteau (Nov 10, 2006 11:16:35 AM)
Have a great weekend. Enjoy a high school football game tonight while the weather is still decent. Last week was terrible. Let's all hope for decent weather against Michigan next Saturday. I'm sure Steve has a lot of exciting things planned for the site this coming week so enjoy. Go Bucks!
