Hello Duane! What scares you the most about this Saturday?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:46:23 AM)
Their defensive line. The front 7 period. If they get alot of penetration I think Smith is going to still be the difference but it will be much more difficult if he doesn't have time. They can be a dominating unit, the front 7.
khopf (Nov 13, 2006 9:47:44 AM)
Hey Duane, I watched video on Major Wright out of FL. What are the chances he becomes a buckeye? Also, I noticed he is set to visit OSU this weekend. Does he have any other visits scheduled? Thanks!
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:48:49 AM)
He has others he is looking at visiting. I don't know if they are set up yet. I would love to have him. I think it is going to be hard to get him out of Florida.
Hicks74 (Nov 13, 2006 9:48:53 AM)
Hi Duane - Pitcock vs. Branch - Who do you like ? Our Defensive stats are right there with Michigan but they get all they hype !
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:50:00 AM)
Pitcock is every so slightly better right now but Branch is younger. In time he will be the better player. He is close right now.
MacAuley says BuckeyesBy17 (Nov 13, 2006 9:50:05 AM)
Hi Duane. Thanks for taking the time today. Marcel frost was last year's "secret weapon", who is it this year?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:51:34 AM)
Robiskie/Hartline. Ginn is always a target. The last 2 years Michigan has been killed by Gonzalez so they will be focused on him. Another possible is Nicol. Smith as been finding him more and more and he is catching the ball.
HuckFenne (Nov 13, 2006 9:51:39 AM)
Everyone is talking about their front 7, but I have confidence in our guys up front. What will be the key for our guys up front?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:53:35 AM)
Penetration. I am not a Michael Hart fan but once he gets rolling downhill he is hard to deal with. He is short, extremely strong and determined. Get on him early. The other thing is Henne hates pressure. He doesn't move well and will force some balls in the face of pressure. Getting in his face with just the front 4 could be the difference in the game.
BuckeyeBill (Nov 13, 2006 9:53:44 AM)
How about Ben Martin's visit to FL? Where do we stand?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:55:23 AM)
We have been talking about this on the message boards this morning. Updates are often a waste of time. What we pick up behind the scenes, most of which we can't report, is more important. I think it is nothing. He will pick between Ohio State and Notre Dame, and I believe the Buckeyes get him.
Poz79 (Nov 13, 2006 9:55:29 AM)
Hi Duane. Do you expect OSU to be in the spread most of the game to keep tsun out of their base D?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:56:26 AM)
Absolutely essential to stay spread out. Packed in they are nearly impossible to beat. They are so big and physical. Spread them out and keep them that way.
Hicks74 (Nov 13, 2006 9:56:30 AM)
Duane, How much have our chance improved with Anthony Davis with all the negative 'Cane news ?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:57:30 AM)
I think it swung it a long time ago. He has said they are out of it. He stays home or comes this way. I can't call it.
HuckFenne (Nov 13, 2006 9:57:35 AM)
Do we blitz more this weekend? I noticed last weekend, our D-Line wasn't making much penetration when NU went back to pass.
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 9:59:35 AM)
I don't think so. We have been getting pressure without it. Maybe they decide that Henne is so flustered by pressure that a little more would be a good thing. That is a strong argument. I think getting pressure with the front four gives us opportunties to do something this defense is doing well, making interceptions. 7 people in coverage means more opportunities to make those interceptions. I would blitz just enough to keep him off balance.
Poz79 (Nov 13, 2006 9:59:43 AM)
Have you heard anything on the condition of the turf?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:02:11 AM)
I have heard nothing and I think that is a good thing. I am right here in Columbus. If it wasn't looking good somebody would have said something. It has had alot more time to settle than the last re-surface. It has rained more than they wanted it to but there have been some warmer days than usual too.
jsbuckeye (Nov 13, 2006 10:02:18 AM)
How many turnovers do we get against um, and what yardage do you see Pittman getting?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:03:38 AM)
I think if we get the pressure I think we get then I see 3. Henne puts it up. I have watched him too many times under pressure become a liability. If Pittman gets 50 yards it is a success. This is a nasty front 7.
Hicks74 (Nov 13, 2006 10:03:46 AM)
Was Cordle playing OT last week ?! Too risky to mess moving Datish to left OT ? How did Cordle beat out Skinner et al.
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:06:37 AM)
Cordle did play LT last week. It wasn't the first time. No way do you move Datish right now. That is like robbing Peter to pay Paul. Shore up LT to try and keep Woodley under control and turn over the middle of the line to Branch. Not a good trade. Boone will play. Sitting him has been about trying to have him as close to 100 percent as possible, not because he was too hurt to play. He could have played last week. If it was a game where he was needed he would have been in there. The simple fact is if we couldn't beat NW without him we were not beating Michigan with him.
Poz79 (Nov 13, 2006 10:06:46 AM)
Is Solomon Thomas still not committing just aboust test scores or is there more to the story?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:07:05 AM)
Skinner is a RT.
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:08:08 AM)
My understanding has been it is about grades. The way things are shaping up you have to wonder.
MacAuley says BuckeyesBy17 (Nov 13, 2006 10:08:14 AM)
Antonio Pittman has run for about 150 yards total over the last two games. Well below what we are accoustomed to seeing. What do you make of that?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:10:49 AM)
I don't make anything of it. Illinois was in our face and we had our worst game of the year. Saturday it was all about getting back to what we do best and being on with it. If anything I think he is a bit worn down. He is not as explosive as he was earlier in the year. I see an ever so slight difference in how he is moving.
TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Nov 13, 2006 10:10:56 AM)
When we're in the spread, how will UM try to defend? Will they try to keep everything in front and take away the deep stuff, will they use press coverage and blitz, or some sort of combination?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:13:35 AM)
If I was making the decision I get after it. I am not one that believes you can cover so well that you can give the QB time. They do blitz some. More than we do. The thing is Smith tends to eat blitzes like candy with both his arm and his feet. Dicey either way. I don't see them playing press coverage. It is not going to help that much with our top 2, Ginn and Gonzo, usually in the slot where they have room to get away from press coverage.
woody68 (Nov 13, 2006 10:13:39 AM)
Are Josh Brent and Martez Wilson a done deal to Illinois?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:16:48 AM)
I think Wilson is. I absolutely refuse to believe Brent is. I think this thing about them wanting to play together is something that surfaced some time ago. Recently he has Ohio State as his leader, as of Nov.5th, and is not even sure of he will visit Illinois. He said he is taking his 3 scheduled visits, Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin, and he will decide if he needs to take anymore visits. Why fans keep going back to that odl statement like it is gospel is beyond me.
HuckFenne (Nov 13, 2006 10:16:55 AM)
It looked as if Troy didn't have that "zip" on the ball last weekend. Will we be able to throw it over the top this weekend?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:18:02 AM)
I can't really address your question because I disagree with what you are saying. He looked fine to me.
mattman587 (Nov 13, 2006 10:18:10 AM)
Any chance that we beat Michigan if Troy has a subpar outing?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:18:58 AM)
I think it can happen but it really becomes difficult. I think the fact that we can beat up their offense still keeps us in it.
utolbuck (Nov 13, 2006 10:19:04 AM)
sorry, late arrival. Any key injuries this week for Mich game?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:19:55 AM)
Nothing new, no. I think we have every starter in there.
calibuck (Nov 13, 2006 10:20:18 AM)
What's the latest with James Wilson visting from FLA? Is he rethinking his commitment to USC?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:21:34 AM)
It looks like he is coming. Cross your fingers. He could be a tackle. O'Dowd couldn't be.
mattman587 (Nov 13, 2006 10:21:59 AM)
Maybe already mentioned, but any more insight on the O'Dowd development?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:24:28 AM)
Nothing new. It looks like we backed out. That is either really good news, that the Buckeyes feel good about other players, or, they felt like it was a waste. That he was headed to USC so why bring him in with a bunch of kids you want thinking about nothing but Ohio State.
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:24:47 AM)
Poison the water.
utolbuck (Nov 13, 2006 10:24:54 AM)
Is it concerning that we havn't had a recruit commit since Clifford in mid-september? or is this about average for this time of year?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:25:35 AM)
Nothing to worry about.
Hicks74 (Nov 13, 2006 10:25:51 AM)
Best Senior Surprise ? Datish adjusting so well no matter where he moves , Richardson really taking advantage or #14 at safety ??
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:26:41 AM)
Richardson. I thought he would be a back-up by now to Wilson.
jsbuckeye (Nov 13, 2006 10:26:53 AM)
Who would be the impact freshman for next year in your opinion?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:28:00 AM)
Clifford or Davis if we get him.
ohs (Nov 13, 2006 10:28:10 AM)
can you give some top lines on how the 08 and 09 classes are shaping up? overall quality? key positions. any chris well quality out there are any position?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:29:41 AM)
OLs and LBs for '08. TEs too. I am just getting to the sophmores.
Poz79 (Nov 13, 2006 10:29:51 AM)
If you could have one of this years starters from that school up north that OSU recruited who would it be?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:30:41 AM)
Manningham or Branch.
digi8 (Nov 13, 2006 10:30:53 AM)
Sorry if a similar question has already been asked. I noticed in the Illinois game that they really disrupted the Ohio State offense by blitzing quite frequently. Michigan has a far superior defense than the Illini and my guess is they will do the same to get troy smith and company out of sink. Any thoughts?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:32:14 AM)
That is a high risk strategy by a team that had nothing to lose, and usually Smith is a blitz killer.
Hicks74 (Nov 13, 2006 10:32:26 AM)
Duane - I am not a Schaefer fan. I think there is more loyalty out of JT there because he is a Sr. Cannot believe Skinner, Browning or even Kerr isn't better. The guy has bounced back-and-forth every year from O to D and back !!
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:33:00 AM)
That is more Bollman than JT.
PABuck (Nov 13, 2006 10:33:14 AM)
It seems everyone is concerned about weather this weekend. If it is rainy or cold, do you think that presents us any major problems?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:34:08 AM)
Weather always hurts a pass first team. That is what we are these.
ohs (Nov 13, 2006 10:34:24 AM)
who is likely to surprise us and come out like jenkins and be superstar we dont expect from this class?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:35:41 AM)
Taurian Washington. Looks like a faster D. Stanley.
utolbuck (Nov 13, 2006 10:35:56 AM)
Any coaches leave between the Mich game and the Bowl game to other schools?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:37:04 AM)
Nothing on that yet. No buzz at the moment. Keep your fingers crossed. This is a highly effective staff on the field and with recruiting.
Hicks74 (Nov 13, 2006 10:37:26 AM)
Wasn't Rehring mentioned at LT before the year ? Datish was mentioned at LG and Cordle the center. (Heck I would put Person at LG before risking Schaefer as a starter.. Sorry, but I want to see that guy go !!)
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:38:34 AM)
Only because Rehring has played there before and the posiiton was open. Stop worrying about it. Boone will play.
manhattan buck (Nov 13, 2006 10:38:35 AM)
Hey Duane, Sorry I improperly logged on so I'll ask question again sorry if its been asked. IF we lose to school up north in a close game are we not ALREADY more qualified tha USC ND FLa. Ark. etc. with how weve played and How tough up north looks this year? Or do we have to count on usc nd and fla to lose? One things for sure this is an important question cause JT unlike Cooper will NEVER lose to school up north twice. So if we happen to lose a close game we still win the nc in a rematch... what a scenario!
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:40:13 AM)
I think it would be easier to figure out Einsteins theory of relativity than to figure out the voodoo of the BCS formula. I have no idea. I assume it is how the posters see the Buckeyes. I really don't know.
ohs (Nov 13, 2006 10:40:18 AM)
do we still get martin?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:40:30 AM)
I think so.
Kirk (Nov 13, 2006 10:40:49 AM)
Ok everyone, thanks for coming today... one last question for Duane, can't let him off the hook without it...
khopf (Nov 13, 2006 10:40:57 AM)
prediction this weekend?
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:41:52 AM)
24-13 Buckeyes or it could get ugly, 37-3, if they don't get to Smith. This is where he locks up the Heisman and JT will let him.
DuaneLong (Nov 13, 2006 10:42:06 AM)
See ya on the boards.
