Chat Transcript - Duane Long

Our chat transcript from yesterday's chat is now here. Yesterday's chat was one of the busiest we've had since the Bucknuts Fan Club started, and the transcript was quite long, so we cleaned it up a lot and seperated just the questions and answers.

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 2:19:38 PM)
Hi Duane!

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:19:53 PM)
I am on time for once.

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 2:20:31 PM)
Well everyone, feel free to fire away with questions for Duane!

RossfordBuck (ID=12) (Aug 15, 2002 2:20:53 PM)
What part of recruiting this year has surprised you most Duane?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:21:51 PM)
The appearance of Notre Dame into Ohio. I have never understood why they didn't have a greater impact here. Now it looks like that is about to change.

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:21:27 PM)
What is your feel as far as QB's? Still one? 2?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:22:11 PM)
I think one QB at the most.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:23:22 PM)
There isn't room for more than one QB and next year's crop is as good if not better.

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:22:23 PM)
Is White out of the picture?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:22:46 PM)
I hope to have an update on White before the day is out.

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 2:23:19 PM)
Duane, if White was the best QB at the Buckeye camp (better than Boeckman and Quinn), why does he have no offers?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:24:05 PM)
White is a bit of an unknown commodity. See where he is rated after the season. All I know is several people really were impressed.

Mike68 (Aug 15, 2002 2:23:24 PM)
What about any OL? We are in need of plenty of OL

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:24:52 PM)
I think Tripp Carroll comes down to Va Tech and Ohio State. He would be a great get. The other that I really like and think the Buckeyes get a visit out of is Andrew Bain.

Minnesota Buckeye (Aug 15, 2002 2:25:20 PM)
Who from this year's freshman class arrived in Columbus lighter, smaller, shorter, or smaller than advertised? Did anyone arrive bigger or faster than thought?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:26:39 PM)
I have not heard anything about players who were overstated in their measurables like in previous years. Salley is huge for a corner. That is about the only one I have heard anything about in that regard.

NewYorkBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:26:12 PM)
Who do you think will be the next Buckeye commit?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:27:55 PM)
I am not speculating on who will be the next commitment. It starts more problems that anything. If the player does not commit fans lose it. The wild speculation starts and takes on a life of its own. It hurts more than it helps.

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 2:26:19 PM)
I thought R. J. Coleman was supposed to be great. Why does no one talk about him?

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 2:27:13 PM)
I've heard good things about Coleman but a lot of people think he might move over to OL. I am not sure why we haven't heard him mentioned more as a possible back-up TE.

Mike68 (Aug 15, 2002 2:27:39 PM)
Which of your Top 10 Ohio players are at least 75% committed to OSU

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:28:43 PM)
I feel good about Patterson and Whitner. I think Burgess may look around a bit after some recent info that was passed to me.

Mike68 (Aug 15, 2002 2:28:26 PM)
Which of your Top 10 do you think the Bucks will have the hardest time getting

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:30:21 PM)
Crable is the one who the Buckeyes are going to be in the biggest dogfight for of the OFS top 10.

Minnesota Buckeye (Aug 15, 2002 2:28:53 PM)
I don't know the details, but I've always heard about Nebraska's walk-on program. Is Coach T building anything that resembles what they do?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:29:27 PM)
So far we have not seen the walk-on program like Nebraska has. Not only at Ohio State but anywhere.

NewYorkBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:30:45 PM)
heres a rich one - but anything new on morris?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:31:21 PM)
Nothing on Morris. They aren't talking to anybody. I hear they want to test him orally.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:30:54 PM)
Duane, What out of state OL do the Buckeyes have the best chance of landing?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:31:47 PM)
Tripp Carroll. The Buckeyes have a great shot with him.

Minnesota Buckeye (Aug 15, 2002 2:31:32 PM)
Speaking of walk-ons, how is Cliff Reynolds doing? Haven't heard anything yet this August.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:32:06 PM)
Reynolds is not here yet.

Hubbard (Aug 15, 2002 2:32:09 PM)
Cliff Reynolds - He's not enrolling till Spring Quarter

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 2:32:46 PM)
Duane, do you believe Maurice Clarett has Heisman-like ability?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:33:13 PM)
No question on Clarett being a Heisman candidate someday.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:32:51 PM)
IS there any chance they give Troy Smith a legitimate shot at some point to play QB as long as Zwick is around?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:34:14 PM)
I think that Smith gets a shot and I think he gets an even better shot if they both redshirt which I think is about 90%. If the returns were added up right now I think Smith would grade higher than Zwick.

Minnesota Buckeye (Aug 15, 2002 2:34:07 PM)
How does Texas Tech rate, in terms of talent and depth of talent? How well have they recruited in recent years?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:35:10 PM)
Texas Tech is not close to the Buckeyes athletically. They will use one of those garbage spread offenses.

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 2:34:52 PM)
Duane, what do you think about Jayson Swain? He's high on your new list... any gut feelings?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:36:00 PM)
I think the Buckeyes have a real shot. He likes the success rate of Ohio State receivers going to the NFL and does not seem to be concerned about getting far away from home.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:35:07 PM)
Do you guys think Boeckman will be a Buckeye?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:37:07 PM)
I am not sure about Boeckman. I think his chances went up with Quinn's verbal but I still think it highly unlikely.

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:37:08 PM)
So, if we were forced to press one of the Frosh QB's into action, which one would it be?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:37:45 PM)
I think it would be Zwick because he is better prepared right now. that is why I think Smith would overtake him with a redshirt year.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:38:30 PM)
Zwick has played in offenses that featured the passing game.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:37:40 PM)
Do you know much about the QB from California? I think his name is White?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:38:11 PM)
I have talked to White several times. What do you want to know?

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:38:17 PM)
What is happening with Datish

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:38:57 PM)
Datish is shocking me. That has to be the one big surprise from the freshmen.

bertobuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:38:18 PM)
Would they run the option with Troy?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:39:17 PM)
I would run some option with Smith but he is a passer first.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:40:00 PM)
I think Smith takes a big leap up the learning curve under coach Tressel.

Bridge152 (Aug 15, 2002 2:38:45 PM)
Your thoughts, but I have a gut feeling that our year will be predicated on our ability to kick Field Goals! Our D will be that stingy! Your thoughts

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:40:48 PM)
I think the kicking game cost Ohio State at least 2 games and maybe 3. No better news has come out of camp than Nugent's showing.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:38:46 PM)
(White) What do you think of him and is he interested?

blufftonbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:40:20 PM)
What is the story on Datish?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:41:57 PM)
Datish just has not jumped out at anybody. Not playing in the all-star games is something to think about. The others played in every game they could. That is alot of reps he missed out on and has not played football for awhile.

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:41:11 PM)
I think this was asked above, but no answer - what are we going to do about linemen for the next couple of years? There don't seem to many really good Ohio guys coming up, and we can't seem to recruit linemen well nationally.

Bridge152 (Aug 15, 2002 2:41:13 PM)
From what I have seen in practice, Clarke is just about done! His conditioning is horrid!

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:43:31 PM)
I have heard nothing about Clarke that makes me optimistic. Notice. Watch for Sims. He could be the biggest surprise in this class. He is backing up Stafford. I think they put him there to groom him to slide into that spot before the season is out.

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 2:41:53 PM)
Yep, Dave B has said he's real concerned about Clarke. It seems a given that he at least won't be ready for TT

pazbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:42:08 PM)
any late news on Boeckman?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:44:58 PM)
Nothing new on Boeckman.

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 2:42:43 PM)
Any news on Wesley Jefferson?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:48:05 PM)
Nothing new on Jefferson. That is something fans need to try and get used to. This early verbal thing is mostly here in the Big 10. Most of these out of state kids are just not ready to make decisions yet.

Minnesota Buckeye (Aug 15, 2002 2:43:10 PM)
What are the odds that we don't take a QB in the 2003 class? Will we pursue anyone else, if we don't take Boeckman or White? Duane, what's your opinion on not taking a QB this year?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:49:12 PM)
I think the problems at QB go back to passing on QBs. The talent level needs an upgrade. I would think very hard about taking a QB but I wouldn't reach. Not with this small class.

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:44:01 PM)
Duane, if we do not take a OB in 2003. Who looks good coming up?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:50:27 PM)
I like Clarke from Ursuline a lot. I like Turner from Chaminade but the one who is really making a move is St. Igs Brian Hoyer.

pazbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:44:20 PM)
it looked for awhile that we would be getting some more early verbals .What happened?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:53:04 PM)
There is nothing to the early verbal thing. Fans put too much stock in it. When they slow down too many hit the panic button, something is wrong. That is not true. Some kids want to get it over with and some don't. It has nothing to do with the school.

Bridge152 (Aug 15, 2002 2:44:48 PM)
Kudla, looking at a redshirt???

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:51:08 PM)
I have not heard anything about Kudla taking a redshirt.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:45:02 PM)
Why hasn't Ohio State offered Ty Hall??

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:54:21 PM)
I think none of the Ohio OLs have been offered because the Buckeyes need to add an immediate impact OL to this class. I like the Ohio OLs but they are all kids that need to redshirt.

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:45:38 PM)
Duane, is Clarrett and Hall playing that well or has Lydell been to hampered by injuries to compete??

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:55:10 PM)
I think it is mostly Clarett and Hall have been that good but Ross is hurting from what I have heard.

nbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:46:17 PM)
is ernie wheelright a real possibilty for this class?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:57:05 PM)
I think Wheelwright is a possibility. Great talent. He may be more of a Fork Union possibility but he is so good he has some offers regardless. Minnesota is a real player here. He is good friends with Tremaine Banks and the Gophers are looking hard at his best freind Justin Valentine.

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 2:46:20 PM)
Duane, I think both Mo Hall and Lydell Ross are NFL-caliber talents? What do you think?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:57:52 PM)
I have always thought Hall was too small to be a college RB let alone a pro RB. I don't see Ross as an NFL caliber player.

pazbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:46:54 PM)
a lot of Ohio kids were leaning to the Bucks. Have the odds gone up or down on any key kids lately?

blufftonbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:47:10 PM)
Is Jorrie Adams the OL from Texas interested in Ohio State or Oklahoma State?

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 2:50:26 PM)
I don't think Jorrie Adams is too interested in Ohio State.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 2:58:45 PM)
I spoke to Jorrie Adams. He is not leaving Texas.

toledobuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:47:57 PM)
Duane, we seem to be doing good with skill position recruits, but we need O linemen, bad!

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:00:06 PM)
Until we see some more success at the NFL level we are going to see the Buckeyes have a hard time getting out of state OLs. That is the key to out of state recruiting. Jim Bollman is doing a great job with the OLs.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:49:29 PM)
Is Stafford going to be OK at guard?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:01:21 PM)
I am not convinced about Stafford. I really feel Sims takes that job. Hopefully sooner rahter than later. Stafford is worrisome to me.

pazbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:49:38 PM)
Duane do you think Boeckman is now a reach?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:04:14 PM)
I have to say Boeckman would fall into the reach category for me.

pazbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:51:20 PM)
Duane did Hoyer camp at OSU this summer?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:01:56 PM)
Hoyer camped at Ohio State, Michigan and Miami.

spbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:54:46 PM)
Duane, If you had to pick three DL for this class from the group of Patterson, Maupin, Cotton, Ewards, and Crable, who would they be?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:02:58 PM)
Patterson, Maupin and Edwards would be my 3 out of that group.

bucknut10 (Aug 15, 2002 2:56:55 PM)
How good/bad will our O line be this year? Last year it seemed like they really came together towards the end of the season. Does this year's line have the same potential???

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:05:38 PM)
I am bothered by Stafford. Outside of that I think we see an improvement with the offensiev line. Jim Lachey thinks Jim Bollman is a great OL coach. I saw alot of improvement last year.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:08:27 PM)
The number of bodies is more worrisome than the talent level. I am not convinced there are enough tackles on this team but the talent improvement has been pretty good.

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:57:07 PM)
Duane has said on a number of occasions that Crable is a tweener. Still think that Duane?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:06:47 PM)
I really think Crable is a tweener. I think he will be best at LB but that is one reason I am not as high on him as others are

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:59:04 PM)
Duane, How big was Robert Smith at OSU.

Duane (ID=13) (Aug 15, 2002 3:07:32 PM)
He was about 6-1 and 200 lbs.

pazbuck (Aug 15, 2002 2:59:27 PM)
Duane if Morris doesn't qualify do you think he will enroll at OSU anyway?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:08:59 PM)
I have heard Morris family is here so I assume he would enroll anyway.

blufftonbuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:00:15 PM)
How is RJ Coleman doing these days? He hasn't been mentioned much in your commentary.

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 3:00:20 PM)
Duane, has Tripp Carroll told you he's high on OSU? I've read elsewhere that VT is far ahead of everyone else.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:10:05 PM)
I think Caroll comes down to Ohio State and Va Tech.

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:02:42 PM)
Where is Hoyer leaning or is it to early??

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 3:03:10 PM)
Duane, for the sake of discussion let's say that left guard is a big weakness this year. How much does a wekaness at one offensive line position hurt an offense?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:12:56 PM)
It will come down to teamwork. Many a line had no individual great talents but working together made them great lines. A couple of years ago Minnesota had one of the best lines I have seen in some time and only one All-Big 10 caliber player.

blufftonbuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:04:56 PM)
How's RJ Coleman doing?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:09:47 PM)
I have not heard anything about Coleman one way or the other. One of my contacts thinks he ends up on the offensive line.

spbuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:06:08 PM)
Duane, do you think Datish is better suited for guard or tackle? I think Downing looks like a natural tackle but I'm not sure if Datish can hold up to the outside speed rush. They both look like excellent prospects.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:14:39 PM)
In high school I thought for sure Datish was a tackle but back then he didn't have that spare tire around his waist. I think he was hurt by not competing this summer. OLs are always behind because of the weight limits in little league. They need all the reps they can get.

artbytes1 (Aug 15, 2002 3:07:55 PM)
Duane, I know it is early, but based on the first couple of weeks of practice, which freshman are meeting (or exceeding) expectations? Any disappointments?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:16:18 PM)
Singling out freshmen is pointless. This group has been outstanding as a whole. Datish has not lived up to billing and Michael Roberts is still having trouble with the transition. The rest are living up to expectations.

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:09:22 PM)
Smith's wait is not that far then off of Hall's which earlier you thought was to small for the NFL!

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:17:15 PM)
There is a big difference between Robert Smith and Mo Hall. I am sure Halls numbers are inflated. He is just a smaller man. That is all there is to it.

spbuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:09:52 PM)
Duane, if you were coach from what you have seen, would you move Shaffer to OT? From the practices I have seen, We have outstanding depth on the DL as compared to the OL. Shaffer has a body of an OT to my eyes. Great looking Dig Body and Frame. He also has excellent movement for a OT.

NewYorkBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:02:15 PM)
One lineman haven't heard about at all is Downing. Anything here?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:11:19 PM)
Nothing on Downing but I am not surprised. I saw him in 2 all-star games. He is going to redshirt. Needs a lot of work in the weightroom. Good feet.

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:13:04 PM)
Duane, do you think we will see multiple wide sets this year from the offense on a regulare basis. We seem to have the talent!

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:18:50 PM)
I think we see multiple sets depending on how comfortable the coaches are with Krenzels game management. If he is taking care of the ball they will let him throw it more. There is some real talent at WR.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:14:13 PM)
Is there any talk of using AJ Hawk at fullback or are they set with the Brandons and Presley?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:17:43 PM)
I have not heard anything about Hawk. Expect him in the 2-deep at LB.

zeek (Aug 15, 2002 3:19:48 PM)
Who wins the Washington State game?

Kirk L.  (Aug 15, 2002 3:21:39 PM)
Not Washington State :)

bertobuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:21:45 PM)
hell yeah!

NewYorkBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:21:46 PM)

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:21:55 PM)
Good call Kirk!

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 3:22:21 PM)
Seriously, it will be a close game I think. Bucks 28-24

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:22:23 PM)
I think the Buckeyes win it. The thing about those hideous garbage spread offenses is they leave alot of room to rush. Texas Tech will be a primer. It will help the Buckeyes get ready for a more talented team.

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:23:44 PM)
The Buckeye pass rush will be the key to both the first 2 games.

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:19:51 PM)
Will Kenyon Buford be a Buckeye?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:21:05 PM)
I don't know about Buford. We talked about a month ago and he said Ohio State led. I am glad you brought that up. I need to call him. The rumormill says if Tennessee offers it is over.

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:20:15 PM)
Did Kudla's performance surprise you?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:22:52 PM)
Kudlas performance?

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:22:56 PM)
Kudla has been injured, hasn't he?

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:23:18 PM)
or lack of??

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:24:12 PM)
I have not heard Kudla has not played well. He has been a little dinged too.

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:20:21 PM)
Any more up and comers in the recruiting circles that we haven't heard much about?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:25:11 PM)
No names are surfacing right now. We probably won't hear anything more until the season starts.

Hoosier Buck (Aug 15, 2002 3:20:27 PM)
Duane, will Underwood redshirt?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:24:42 PM)
No way does Underwood redshirt. Graded a 93 in the first scrimmage.

blufftonbuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:21:56 PM)
Ohio State doesn't seem to be especially close to signing any out of state OL. Don't you think this a number of months off?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:25:51 PM)
I think any OL commitments will be into the season and probably deep into the season. Carroll may visit early.

alumn (Aug 15, 2002 3:27:34 PM)
has anyone asked about the freshmen receivers?

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:28:07 PM)
Hall and Holmes have looked great so far. Any other school they would not be redshirting.

bertobuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:23:55 PM)
is texas tech game a lockdown to win or is it up in the air, i heard they had a great D and they beat A&M last year

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:25:51 PM)
I think any OL commitments will be into the season and probably deep into the season. Carroll may visit early.

Kirk L. (Aug 15, 2002 3:27:08 PM)
Ok everyone... Thanks to Duane for answering the questions... we'll keep going here but Duane is got to take off. Thanks Duane!

Hubbard (Aug 15, 2002 3:27:15 PM)
thanks duane

Duane (Aug 15, 2002 3:27:30 PM)
See you next time. I will work on my typing skills.

Hoosier Buck (Aug 15, 2002 3:27:44 PM)
Thanks Duane!

RossfordBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:27:49 PM)
Thanks Duane!!!!!

NuttyBuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:27:49 PM)
Thank you

calibuck (Aug 15, 2002 3:28:03 PM)
