Nevada Buck Chat Archive: Nov. 20

NevadaBuck stopped by this afternoon for a chat session with Bucknuts subscribers. We have a transcript posted below.

reallytired (Nov 20, 2006 9:43:20 AM)
Heya Nevada, Any chance we can get a quick line on the nc game????

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:44:08 AM)
depends on who we play....USC-Ohio State would be OSU -7

JimC (Nov 20, 2006 9:44:29 AM)
Hi Nevada. Any news on recruits from the game?

USFbuckeyeBG (Nov 20, 2006 9:44:31 AM)
Nevada.. Tell us what u know

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:45:25 AM)
I think we picked up three guys this weekend...but not sure when they want to go public so I cant go any further......

Buckeye030 (Nov 20, 2006 9:45:29 AM)
It seems we have nice OOS momentum this year, do we load up and worry about class balance next year, or discipline ourselves now?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:47:32 AM)
18 is the number....

Kurt (Nov 20, 2006 9:47:47 AM)
What's the deal with Boone?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:49:16 AM)
Boone is fine and played very very well on Sat

Tim Moxley (OL) (Nov 20, 2006 9:49:21 AM)
Nevada, how many O-Linemen will we get in this class?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:50:57 AM)
I think we get two this year...Blankenship and Davis

LasVegasBuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:51:07 AM)
Hey Nevada, What does it look like for Eric Berry and Allen?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:52:45 AM)
dont know if there will be room

Cinciyinzer (Nov 20, 2006 9:53:05 AM)
Nevada, thanks for chatting...what's your best guess on how this recruiting class finishes up?

kirkbride (Nov 20, 2006 9:53:11 AM)
Lets get the recruit question out there all in one. If you had to take a shot at the final nine, who? Not who you want, who you expect it will be based off the latest transactions.

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:54:49 AM)
Martin, Thomas, Barksdale, Brent, Still, Davis, Rolle, Hines, and Wright---with Thompson just on the edge if someone slips up academically....that would be my 18

USFbuckeyeBG (Nov 20, 2006 9:55:12 AM)
Whats the word on deonte thompson

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:56:14 AM)
had a great visit...we have more than a good shot at him

MacAuley (Nov 20, 2006 9:56:26 AM)
NevadaBuck - Thanks for taking the time to chat today. Who do the Buckeyes face in the BCS Championship? Is there any team that matches up well with the Buckeyes?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:57:52 AM)
USC is the favorite...and I think they will be a quality opponent.....but if we bring our A game we win....its as simple as that....but they are balanced and talented, make no mistake

AspenBuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:58:18 AM)
Nevada, Any mention of the Tunnel of Pride by any coaches, players or recruits. That thing was overwhelming...must have had some impact. It was by far the best one I have seen, although the team kinda rushed getting on the fieldan the whole tunnel was not complete.

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 9:59:22 AM)
The Tunnel of Pride was fantastic, but I'm not sure if our guys needed anymore motivation. The crowd was crazy....loudest Ive ever heard at tOSU.....and I think they played a role.....

ohs (Nov 20, 2006 9:59:32 AM)
do we want a rematch? Will OSU be fired up about Mich or would Mich want revenge so much that it would help them more?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:01:29 AM)
I just think the rematch idea is silly. It would basically say that what happened on Saturday didnt matter---as we have to beat them again to get the NC......frankly, the good thing about a rematch is that we know they cant stop us---its just a question if we can slow them down a bit...but I think its all moot, as I believe we will get USC.....

Buckeye030 (Nov 20, 2006 10:01:50 AM)
Nevada, Wright seemed pretty stoked about his visit. Is this the typical temporary romance that Duane talks about, or do you think we actually land M. Wright? I would think MIami's new staff will be all over him once Coker goes.

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:02:57 AM)
I believe that Wright will be a Buckeye. Clifford and Wright in the defensive secondary would have to be a scary sight for Big 10 Wr's...wouldnt you say???

edbuck51 (Nov 20, 2006 10:03:16 AM)
Any concerns about the long lay off before the bowl game?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:04:24 AM)
not with the way that JT has prepared this team over the past few years.....we've won four straight bowl games all coming off layoffs......JT is the best big game coach in the business--so he will have them ready

Infinitibuc (Nov 20, 2006 10:04:54 AM)
Whats the word on Martez Wilson?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:06:11 AM)
Wilson will be in here on Dec 8th...I think we will have a much better picture of what is going on with him right now....still have some smart people saying OSU--but I remain unconvinced....

redondo (Nov 20, 2006 10:06:27 AM)
Nevada - Let's discuss the officials -- How much of a "profile" does the staff maintain on the Big Ten crews - like these guys call a lot of holding or these guys do or don't call a lot of pass interference so that when they see a particular crew they can coach the team to play more or less aggressively relative to the way the game will be played?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:07:53 AM)
they certainly know who is calling the games...but it doesn't seem to matter this year, as we always seem to get our fair share of questionable calls(or non calls)--having said that, the Personal foul on that genius Crable was we finally got one for the good guys..

calibuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:08:10 AM)
When will the first of the 2008 class make their commitments public (Adams, etc) and who do we get early?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:09:21 AM)
I think they've been asked to hold off until after signing day....but the next out, as we have a few guys jockeying to be first for 2008--and spots are limited...Adams and Brewster were doing a lot of recruiting this weekend, if that is any indication....

Buckguy108 (Nov 20, 2006 10:09:36 AM)
What was the deal with O-Dowd? Why was his visit cancelled?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:10:26 AM)
only going to take one more linemen....and Davis is higher on the list(with Jackson as well)....and Davis is going to be a Buckeye, so no room at the Inn.....

Kurt (Nov 20, 2006 10:10:42 AM)
Any chance Hart and Henne have played in their last OSU/Michigan game?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:12:00 AM)
Henne is sniffing around...but I would be surprised to see either leave. Hart gets the early nod for the "WAAAAAA" Award with his performance after the game....good players on the field for sure....they showed me a TON on Saturday.....

expresblfc (Nov 20, 2006 10:12:12 AM)
Does the '18' recruits we are going to take include only TGII turning pro early? Anyway this number jumps if we see more defections? I just can't fathom turning down a Deonte Thompson to bank for next year......

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:13:39 AM)
I would be surprised to see if go above 18. Next year is LOADED in Ohio, and with the Block O coming onboard, spots will be limited...but certainly, there are guys that are just too good to turn Martez Wilson..not sure if Thompson is the same--could be, just not sure....

kirkbride (Nov 20, 2006 10:14:08 AM)
What's your take on Skip from Cold Pizza saying scUM has the better athletes and would win the NC if they get a rematch and should. He stated the only reason they lost was they were out coached by Tres and Llllloyd would make the adjustments. He went on to say that we were off are game normal gamelan going 5 wide. If I'm not mistaken we've done that all year.

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:15:47 AM)
Skip is just trying to create controversy-----you guys have to remember that its there job to create viewers----I dont believe they even believe half of what they say---they just want to stir the pot....

buckmark (Nov 20, 2006 10:15:57 AM)
Greatest thing about last Saturday... everytime the Wloves made a run at getting back in it, we had an answer! In spite of the turnovers, penalties, etc., we had an answer! Watching this team play is so enjoyable because you just know that no matter what happens, they will have an answer! Now my question..... who looks to have the inside track on QB next year? Do the coaches believe that any of the three have whatever it is that Troy has?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:17:09 AM)
spoke to a guy who would "know" this weekend, who went out of his way to single out Antonio Henton as the next big thing......its going to be fun to watch...but it would not surprise we to see Henton at the controls....

thedietz (Nov 20, 2006 10:17:14 AM)
Sorry if this was asked...Who leaves early from scUM and tOSU? Ginn is gone, but what about Gonzo, Pittman, Barton etc.? On the other side, does Henne, Hart etc. jump ship as well?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:18:27 AM)
Ginn is gone, Barton and Pittman will snifff around--but I think they both come back. Henne is sniffing as well, Hart stays. We want Long to leave. Gonzo isnt going anywhere.

CelticBuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:18:52 AM)
Are there any surprise recruits on the horizon for this year, i.e., guys we haven't been speculating about? What about RB B. Green from Arkansas? GO BUCKS!

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:20:03 AM)
I think there are a few names that could pop up here in the next few weeks...but you have to appreciate how tight spots are right now.....but there could be a few special surprises----as some names have been bantered about.....

beautifuljoe (Nov 20, 2006 10:20:37 AM)
Nevada, I am looking at Michigans' starting defensive lineup and I see that they will lose EVERY significant player off this years team. The defense was easily the strength of this years team (regardless of how the offense did on Saturday). They will loose to graduation Woodley, Biggs, Crable, Burgess, Harris, Hall Mundy and Englemon. Alan Branch will probably go early. Michigan HAD to win Saturday. They didn't! Do you forsee this trend of us beating Michigan for years to come? Plain and simple, is our program just better for the long run?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:24:07 AM)
I dont pay that much attention to what Michigan is returning--as they have a funky way of listing eligibility(I thought Long was a senior--but he isnt , so what do I know...?? LOL) I just think we are going to be loaded for the forseeable future.....but the Wolverines in Ann Arbor next year will be as FORMIDABLE an opponent as you will see.....

The Yetti (Nov 20, 2006 10:24:29 AM)
If Pittman and Barton due indeed come back - who will be the starting QB and what do you think our record will be next year?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:26:09 AM)
boy that's a tough Im still savoring the victory from Saturday and gearing up for the big one on Jan 8th....but I think Henton is the guy, and I will go with 11-1 next year...

osubeast (Nov 20, 2006 10:26:33 AM)
Sorry if already ask. Do you see Lyons and M. Wells here next year?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:28:55 AM)
I have no idea what Lyons and Maurice will do...but every year there are some we will just have to wait and see.....

Kirk (Nov 20, 2006 10:29:46 AM)
(Just a note -- with over 100 people on the chat, we're getting tons of questions and lots of repeat questions that have been answered already. We'll try and get as many in as we can but if your question does not get answered in the next few min, be sure to check the transcript later today.)

buckeyeinsaline (Nov 20, 2006 10:30:13 AM)
for five years it seems, Jim Tressell got little respect from the elite media. Now it seems all pay him homage. OSU was viewed from the Maurice Clarett debacle, now that has cleared and seems many are now seeing what those of us have seen. JT truely has righted all in Buckeye land! What do you hear from your sources regarding JT and his future?

TexasBuckeye (Nov 20, 2006 10:30:18 AM)
Do you see any potential changes in our staff after season ends?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:31:51 AM)
I think there are a couple of guys that you have to be concerned about losing, Hazell being at the top of the list....the good news is that JT and Heacock aren't going anywhere....and I would be surprised to see Fickell move on...but change on the staff is inevitable, as people want to move up--and JT isnt going anywhere for a long long long time

brad (Nov 20, 2006 10:32:20 AM)
what's the scoop on Dukes? Doghouse or just not good enough to see the field? What can we expect from him from here on out?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:34:19 AM)
I think Dukes and Small will both play a prominent role in our offense next year.....look how long it took Roy Hall to get meaningful catches.....patience is the key, as we are deep at WR...and just going to get deeper....Dukes needed to work on his blocking, and he has come a long way in that department.....he could always run great routes and catch it...I look for big things out of him next year....

BuckeyeBlueDevil (Nov 20, 2006 10:34:31 AM)
Nevada, thanks for all of your wonderful input and optimism. As you better than anyone can affirm, college football--like essentially everything else--is cyclical. Or rather, Ohio State can't stay this good forever. What obstacles do you foresee that could bring Ohio State back down from the lofty stature it has earned over the past few seasons? (Not that we want that to happen...but it wasn't long ago that Miami and Florida State were kings of the world in college football, and not that long ago that USC was nearly drowning in the Pac-10).

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:36:33 AM)
I think that it comes down to recruiting, staff stability, good overall team health and academic standing....and we look good in all four areas.......but you can never get complacent.....and JT understands that better than anyone....

chuangtsu (Nov 20, 2006 10:36:41 AM)
What does our starting D-line look like for next year?

woodysgrandson (Nov 20, 2006 10:36:44 AM)
Who starts at DT next year?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:37:50 AM)
I think you will see Gholston, Denlinger, Worthington and Wilson across the front line.....

edbuck51 (Nov 20, 2006 10:38:16 AM)
Any chance JT wins National Coach of the Year? It would be nice to hear Troy through out a few plugs with all the air time he'll be getting in the next couple of weeks.

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:39:38 AM)
JT will get some votes, especially with the Rutgers story losing some luster this weekend....but Im still think Schiano gets the award...he did a helluva job with the state college of New Jersey.....they better enjoy him while he is there---because he isnt going to be there for long.....

rbuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:40:02 AM)
Nevada, do you see Gonzo coming back? I don't see it and have a good source that tells me it he'll move on also.

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:41:07 AM)
Gonzo isnt going anywhere. Period. End of story. Sometimes you "think" and sometimes you "know

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:41:11 AM)
I know on that one. LOL

DantheMan (Nov 20, 2006 10:41:20 AM)
Do you see Sanzenbacher contributing next year as a true freshman the way RS Fr. Gonzalez and more recently Hartline contributed

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:42:26 AM)
I think it will be tough for any freshman to break into the lineup. I say redshirt the Great Dane and then let him go. He is one of my favorties all ready....and Im sure he will be one of yours--as you gotta love this kid......

Guest (Nov 20, 2006 10:42:35 AM)
Will Ohio State target a big-time recieving tight end? Is this part of Tressel's gameplanning or does he prefer block-first TE's?

CelticBuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:42:43 AM)
Do you see Ben Person starting at guard next year, replacing TJ?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:44:19 AM)
yes..I think Person steps in to Downing's spot. Big Ben has been patient and waiting his time. I think he will leap out at everyone next year--ala Doug Datish.....Person has been looking real real good in practice.....

shermantank52 (Nov 20, 2006 10:44:25 AM)
We all had high expectations for Kyle Mitchum any updates when he might jump in the starting 5

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:45:36 AM)
next year is make or break for Kyle....he either has to step up or get passed by.....I think the jury is still out on him.....Skinner and Person have clearly moved ahead of Kyle right now....but its a long way until next spring.....lots can happen....

chuangtsu (Nov 20, 2006 10:45:42 AM)
I think next year's fight in our secondary will be awesome. Who wins out and starts?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:46:28 AM)
You have to think its going to be Jenkins and Washington at the corners, with Russell and ONeal at the safties....we will be fun to watch for sure.....

Kirk (Nov 20, 2006 10:46:34 AM)
Ok we need to let Nevada go; thanks NB for coming today. We'll end today with one last question, and it will be a summary of the most asked-questions today. We've already covered it, but we'll ask it again due to popular demand... :) Nevada -- one more time can you post the players who will round out your recruiting class and who will be next to commit?

nevadabuck (Nov 20, 2006 10:48:14 AM)
I say the Final Nine will be Martin, Thomas, Barksdale, Still, Brent, Davis, Wright, Rolle, and Hines....with Rolle being the next to pull the trigger......"Picking not recruiting".....

Kirk (Nov 20, 2006 10:48:54 AM)
Ok everyone, thanks so much for coming today. We'll have some things on the front page later today to watch for, including a recruiting update or two.
