Woodward's Edwards to set things up

Cincinnati standout Raymond Edwards is one of Ohio's best defensive prospects this year. Here's the latest on him.

The city of Cincinnati has produced one player for Ohio State in the past two years -- Ryan Hamby.  This year, however, there is a rising star from that city who could add to the total.

DE Raymond Edwards from Cincinnati Woodward High School was first mentioned back in the Spring Issue of Ohio's Future Stars as "The best player nobody's talking about."  Well, the secret didn't last long as he quickly became a player a whole lot of people are talking about.

His numbers might have something to do with that.  Check out these stats from Buckeye camp:

  • 6-5, 230 lbs, 4.58 40
  • 29.5" vertical
  • 18 reps of 225!!! I thought it was 18 reps of 185, but he corrected me: "No, it was 225. 185 was for the DBs."

That's pretty impressive for a defensive end.  The Buckeyes were certainly impressed as they are hot on his trail.

"Ohio State is paying the most attention to me right now," Raymond said.

Raymond just started his season a week ago (of the game, he said "We lost on a last second play. It was very frustrating.  I had 3 tackles for loss in the game.") and he is currently playing linebacker for Woodward.

"I am playing both inside and outside at linebacker," he said. "We play a 4-3. I know I will be a DE in college.

In addition to starting the season, Raymond is starting to get things set up recruiting-wise.

"I will start setting up my visits in about 2 weeks," he said.  "Right now, I am going to visit Ohio State, Purdue, Northwestern, Penn State, and South Carolina."

"I have no leader."

Raymond has been to two of those schools so far.  "I have been to Ohio State and Purdue," he said. "I camped at Ohio State."

It sounds like distance will be a factor in his decision.  "I am not thinking about getting too far away from home," he said.

Raymond is also a fine basketball player, and it was on the basketball court where his athleticism first got noticed.  Chances are he is talented enough to play either sport on the next level.  But it sounds like hoops is out of the picture.

"I am not thinking about doubling," Raymond said.  "I am going to be a football player in college."

Raymond is also working on getting his test scores in order.  "I will be re-taking the test in October," he said.

Raymond Edwards is certainly a player to watch this year on the recruiting front. He'd be an outstanding addition to any school's recruiting class.
