Future Buckeye: Donnie Evege

Huber Heights Wayne's Donnie Evege was offered a scholarship by Ohio State early in his high school career. Evege didn't take long to accept the offer and he's eager to get his career as a Buckeye started. Might Evege be enrolling early at Ohio State? Bill Greene spoke with Evege about this and other subjects.

In a class loaded with speed, Huber Heights Wayne's Donnie Evege will fit right in with his future teammates. Evege, who is being recruited as a cornerback, earned his Buckeye offer by performing well in Ohio State's summer camps. Evege said his decision to attend Ohio State was an easy choice because of the presence of Jim Tressel.

"When I got the chance to play for a coach like Jim Tressel, I didn't have to think twice," Evege said. "I have camped at Ohio State since my freshman year and just being around him was so awesome for me. Seeing how he is a man of great character and integrity made me want to be a part of his program. The assistant coach's were tremendous also. Coach Beckman and I talk all the time."

Evege was also impressed with being able to attend a university he admires so much.

"Ohio State was a place I felt most comfortable at," he explained. "There is great tradition athletically and academically there is a lot to offer as well. Plus it's close to home and that was very important to me."

Evege has already graduated from high school and will be enrolling early at Ohio State. He will be eligible to participate in spring football. He talked about the advantages of enrolling early.

"Enrolling early will give me the opportunity to adjust to college life," Evege explained. "I'll be taking courses in the spring and in the summer so I'll have a quick start on getting my degree. I want to play early, as soon as possible, and this gives me a jump on the other freshmen. My goal is to get there and work as hard as I can both athletically and academically. I'll be rooming with James Scott as he's coming in early too."

Evege was quick to give credit to others who have helped him along the way.

"I have three main role models in my life that I have to thank," he continued. "First is Jesus Christ. My faith is very special to me. Second and third, I have to look at my mom and dad. They have supported me and encouraged me all the way."

Evege talked about how special it will be to fax his offer to Ohio State on Wednesday.

"Wow. This will be about joy and excitement," Evege exclaimed. "I will always stay humble and understand that a lot of people would love to be in this position. I will get the chance to play for the best. There aren't many people that get that type of opportunity. My main goal will be to work hard and do what I have to do to succeed, on the field and off. Hopefully this is the first day of that process. I couldn't be happier to tell you the truth."
