Ben Buchanan is a Buckeye

Ben Buchanan is one of the most successful kickers / punters in Ohio prep football history. He garnered All-State honors as a freshman, and now has earned and accepted a scholarship to stay at home and play for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Ben Buchanan, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound kicker from Central High in Westerville, Ohio received an offer from Ohio State on February 28th, and it did not take him losing to make a commitment.

"They actually offered me on Wednesday night and they offered me a scholarship," Buchanan began to explain of the how his commitment story unraveled. "I did not want to make to quick of a decision, so I thought about it for like two days, and then I called Coach (Jim) Tressel this morning and made a commitment."

"It is a pretty humbling experience for me. As a kid that grows up in the Columbus area it is always a dream to play for the Buckeyes."

"They just showed a lot of loyalty to me," Buchanan continued. "It meant a lot to me that they wanted to invest in me at this early of a point in the recruiting process, so I pretty much knew in my heart instantly that I was going to be a Buckeye."

Even though Buchanan is an excellent kicker on the high school level, he may get his first shot at Punter on the next level.

"From what I talked about with them it seems like I will come in as a freshman or sophomore and take over the punting duties after A.J. Trapasso is gone," Buchanan informed. "I am real hoping by the time I am a junior that I can handle all three duties (Kicking, Punting, and Kick off). Hopefully that can free up a schollie, I just want to be able to do whatever I can to help out the team."

Ohio State has had a lot of success with special teams under the guidance of Coach Tressel, and Buchanan has worked out with some of the most talented guys to come out of the system.

"I do work out with Dan Stultz," Buchanan said. "I have also got to work some with Andy Groom and Mike Nugent. It is amazing what they were able to do, and it is beneficial just to work with them and get knowledge about the positions."

"I can not even really comment on what it means to be a kicker or punter for the Buckeyes. They have had a whole lot of success and are known for breeding great kickers and punters."

As a junior, Buchanan earned All-Conference honors after booting field goals from 54, 47, 44, 40, 33 and 29 yards and was perfect on all of his extra point attempts. 80 percent of his kickoffs (24/30) were booted out of the end zone. As a punter, he also earned All-Conference honors after averaging 41 yards per punt (15 punts inside the 20) with a long of 65 yards.
