Staples Receives Offer

Lakewood St. Edward linebacker Justin Staples continues to hear from most of the top colleges in the country. Staples, also a key member of the number one ranked Eagle basketball team, received his first scholarship offer from Syracuse this week.

Lakewood Sr. Edward junior Justin Staples received his first scholarship offer from Syracuse on Tuesday. Staples, one of the top players in Ohio, is starting to draw a lot of interest from college recruiters. This multi-talented athlete is also a member of the Eagles' undefeated basketball team. Staples is hearing from a lot of the top universities in the country including Ohio State.

"It felt great to get that first offer," Staples exclaimed. "I called them on Tuesday and they said they were offering me a scholarship. I was really happy to hear the news. They said they loved my film and they wanted me to be a part of their team. They're recruiting me as an outside linebacker."

The 6' 3" and 210 pound Staples is also in constant contact with several other universities.

"I get a lot of text messages every day," he said. "I'm hearing from Northwestern, Illinois, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Oklahoma State now that coach [Tim] Beckman left Ohio State and went there. We had a good relationship when he was at Ohio State and that is still the same. Coach Luke Fickell is recruiting me for Ohio State now. He's a real cool guy and we talk pretty often. He wants me to come to camp this summer and work out for them. He wanted me to come to the Wisconsin basketball game a few weeks ago but I couldn't make it because the weather was pretty bad in Cleveland that day. I've been to Ohio State for two football games and I really like them a lot. Nate Oliver and I are close and he's always talking up the Buckeyes to me."

His basketball commitment takes up a lot of time but Staples did manage to get to two junior days this winter.

"I was able to Cincinnati and to Northwestern for junior days," Staples explained. "It's hard to get to them because we play a lot of Saturday basketball games. I owe it to my teammates to be at every practice and game. We're undefeated and we're focused on winning a state title. We feel we should have won it on football so we're trying to get this one to make up for it."

Staples has not finalized plans to attend any camps at this time but has several under consideration.

"I'll probably go to Ohio State and Iowa for sure," he noted. "After that I'm not sure. I'm thinking about getting to the camp in Pittsburgh. I'm also thinking about going on the Ted Ginn bus tour. Once basketball is over I'll sit down and try to set a schedule of where I want to go."

Right now Syracuse is at the top of his list because they stepped up with an offer. Staples has not been to a game at Syracuse but has visited the school this past year.

"We've been there because my mother has family in the area," he said. "I'll try to get to a game up there this fall. Hopefully there will be more offers coming."
