Scout TV Ohio - Ryan Smoot

In today's world of college football size has become a major issue as receivers have reached all-time highs in overall size and college programs look for those who can match-up and defend. Despite these numbers this undersized prospect has two offers and looking for more. We introduce his film on

Ryan Smoot

Columbus Africentric High School

Defensive Back

HT: 5-foot-8 – WT: 181-pounds

When a prospect lacks the desired size looked for by college coaches he better excel in other areas that can make up for it.  Ryan Smoot does that and more by using speed and toughness to overcome his height of 5-foot-8 in today's world of 6-foot-3 and taller receivers.

Since his freshman season, Smoot has been defying the odds and making plays through the use of his overall physical gifts.  But what sets Smoot apart from many is he also has done the work in the classroom with a 3.4 GPA and scoring a 20 on the ACT.

On film you're quick to see Ryan Smoot is not afraid to mix it up on the field.  When he takes you down you know it and feel it.  As a freshman Smoot recorded over 100 tackles (93 solo) with 5 sacks while earning 2-nd team All-City honors.  Many felt Smoot was on the fast track but he found his sophomore season short as he only took part in five games.  Despite the lack of a full season the Africentric athlete still recorded 45 tackles (23 solo) and 4 sacks while also posting some offensive numbers in the process.  Things came together for Smoot as a junior when he returned to his freshmen numbers posting 105 tackles (90 solo), 4 sacks, 5 forced fumbles while recovering three and getting 63 carries for 450 yards and 5 touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball.

Despite the production, Smoot has only seen Eastern Michigan and Air Force make official offers.  Not having the height many college coaches look for may have disappointed others but Smoot knows he's the total package and will fulfill his goals of attending college.

"Nothing has changed and it's only Eastern and Air Force who've offered at this time.  I'm not too worried right now as I work towards having a great senior season."

As a well rounded athlete Ryan Smoot knows knowledge on and off the field is essential for overall success in life.  And if college coaches can look pass the lack of height they just might find a hidden gem of a talent in front of them.
