Jerry's here, feel free to post your questions. I want to hear what Jerry thought of the UC adventure
nbuck (Sep 24, 2002 5:22:39 PM)
jerry this is for you I really miss you on tv6 in columbus, are they going in a new direction there also wtvn radio has annoying munch bishop on the radio is that part you feel as a new strategy for them
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:22:43 PM)
awesome experience...except for being scared to death for 60 straight minutes. I wish they would do that every year down there. Absolutely awesome
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:24:29 PM)
WBNS is the force in Columbus radio and television in terms of the Buckeyes. I enjoyed being at Channel 6, but we went in separate directions. D. Stanley is over there now.
buckeyemurph (Sep 24, 2002 5:25:31 PM)
Jerry, I know coach Tressel harped all week not to look past Cincinnati, It appeared that we came out not ready to play, how does this happen?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:27:46 PM)
All the cliches by the players are nice to hear, but it is really hard to avoid the letdown. I still contend that we played decent. But decent isn't good enough. We had no snap, pop, punch, fight, etc. in us. We had it against WSU, but not UC. Almost too late. Mature teams have a game mode that is automatic. We can't rely on emotion in big games to win.
ohiobuck94 (Sep 24, 2002 5:27:33 PM)
what will it take to win against Indiana
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:29:03 PM)
IU doesn't have much. It is okay to admit that as a player, you just can't treat it that way. We need to go out and play physical on the line of scrimmage. If we do that, we have the speed and athletes to win by 20 points at least
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 5:29:14 PM)
why is it that we don't use Mo Hall differently? He should not be running off tackles like the rest of the back. Give it to him outside and let him use his speed.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:30:31 PM)
Hall got absolutely laid out by that LB. Wow. He is light and you are right, he is not known as a physical guy. I still say let him slash inside at times. Those guys hit the hole so quick, it can give linebackers fits.
buckeyemurph (Sep 24, 2002 5:29:32 PM)
Jerry, what do you think of the offensive schemes? I know there has been a lot of talk on the boards about our offense being to vanilla and predictable?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:32:38 PM)
Offensively, our schemes are okay. We just let there front dictate what we did. Sure, I would like to see a passing attack that showcases our receivers running in stride make huge gains, but we need to protect and wear down a defense to see that shine. If a defense has to respect the long ball, the inside run, the outside run, etc. , you better believe those crossing routes will open right up
A FAN (Sep 24, 2002 5:30:47 PM)
Jerry, is it possible that the condition of the turf played a larger roll in our problems than we thought they would? Such as causing us to be more tentative than UC?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:34:41 PM)
I want to say the turf was a bigger deal, but UC had to play on it too. Our defensive backs seemed most affected. We were breaking up on the play and making tackles. Not good, not bad. We need those guys to explode when the ball is in the air and break it up. Make something happen. We didn't do enough of that and the turf could have played a role. The saying holds true though..."nothing keeps us from winning". The players better believe in that
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 5:34:37 PM)
Jerry, do you feel that Fox will still get moved back to safety next year? I almost think that corner is better for him and the team.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:36:51 PM)
I see Fox as a safety eventually. Is he fast enough for corner? Yes. But get the best 11 on the field. I could see him at corner next year, but by his senior year, I anticipate the pipeline being full. I like him at centerfield. He is too good a tackler to be downfield in a decoy.
buckeyemurph (Sep 24, 2002 5:36:59 PM)
Jerry, Do you think getting the experience of playing in such a tight competitive game will help us out somewhere down the road?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:38:14 PM)
Not necessarily late in a game. What will help us is the reality check. Had we not been tested by UC, we would have been lulled to sleep at practice and had a Big Ten team get us. It is a blessing in disguise. Trust me.
ohiobuck94 (Sep 24, 2002 5:36:59 PM)
Does M Clarett make the difference in wearing defenses down or is it the O-line that wears down D's?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:39:53 PM)
O-line will wear on you, but not the way Clarett will wear on you. You play a back like that and you eventually dread coming up and hitting him. I have seen film where guys slip on their way to the tackle, or they just can't get off a block, or they have a nagging injury that sidelines them just because they don't want to get embarrassed tackling a beast like him.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:40:04 PM)
Clarett will wear you down big time.
Kirk (Sep 24, 2002 5:40:19 PM)
What are some of the things the team can do to avoid a letdown in the future, or do you think that the UC scare will be enough of a wake-up call so it won't happen again?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:42:20 PM)
It could definitely happen again. You just need to develop great practice habits. If you do it 100% of the time in practice, you will be okay in the game. If you just show flashes in practice, or you sometimes look sharp...it will haunt you. The seniors and the coaches need to avoid sloppy play in practice. It carries over to the games.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:43:21 PM)
Our teams weren't always extremely fired up to go on the road and play Illinois that hadn't won a game, but if you only know good habits...you will still route the opposition
ohiobuck94 (Sep 24, 2002 5:43:44 PM)
How much influence do the rotating offensive captains have on the teams attitudes and practice habits?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:44:55 PM)
They seem to like it. The team realizes no one individual senior was truly deserving of that role. On the flip side, they have guys that bust there tail and deserve recognition. The players seem to like the concept. But don't expect it to stick after this year.
buckeyemurph (Sep 24, 2002 5:44:25 PM)
Jerry, Do you feel we may have let both the WSU game and the Cincinnati game get away from us the past few years?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:47:02 PM)
Absolutely. I can't tell you how big third downs are and we won those third down battles in those games when we had to. I seemed like years past, we weren't efficient enough in the money downs. The seniors/leaders seem to be saying "we need to get off the field and get our offense the ball right now." Players are responding. You earn your scholarship on third downs and you earn victories on third downs.
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 5:45:53 PM)
i really like what PSU is doing with Robinson(backup qb). PSU's offense really scares me. Do you see the bucks eventually using Troy Smith like that. I watched some practices and really thought Smith looked great. Also, do think that D'Andrea will move to OLB with Hawk playing inside. From what I've seen of D'Andrea has a tough time getting off blocks. He might be better outside to use his speed.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:49:32 PM)
Hawk definitely has the ability to play inside. He is physical enough. As far as D'Andrea, he will only get better (not that he is struggling now as a freshman). I would see D'Andrea as an inside or a rush guy. Those olb's need to be good in space and I think Mike D. strong point is attacking the heart and soul of an offense, not playing in space.
ohiobuck94 (Sep 24, 2002 5:50:31 PM)
How much will we miss Wilhelm next year?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:51:04 PM)
getting back to the practice habits, I have noticed the players working much harder this year. They have raised the bar in terms of getting after each other. The improved depth makes guys work harder and play faster
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:52:47 PM)
I like Wilhelm a lot. Great leader. He is so athletic. We have some young guys that can play the game, but Wilhelm's knowledge of that defense is impressive. He understands the schemes and "little things". That being said, we will miss him dearly. I like the pipeline though
buckeyemurph (Sep 24, 2002 5:53:06 PM)
Thanks, Jerry & Kirk its been fun
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:53:21 PM)
We'll talk to you soon. Beat the Hoosiers.
ohiobuck94 (Sep 24, 2002 5:53:28 PM)
It's been great!!!
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:53:53 PM)
I will be around for next 20 minutes if you guys have questions
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:54:11 PM)
I am a sicko...I can talk about this stuff forever.
Kirk (Sep 24, 2002 5:54:58 PM)
That's what we all have in common here :)
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 5:54:04 PM)
is shedding blockers something that can be taught very easily? i've heard that D'Andrea had that problem in high school
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:56:12 PM)
It can be taught, but not easily. The key is using your hands. You wouldn't think your hands could make that big of a difference when taking on a 320 lbs., 6'6" monster, but they do. Bag drills and hitting the sled every single day will get you in the right habits. The guys that get off blocks use there hands, and yes, it can be taught.
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 5:55:21 PM)
i think Smith will be the man
ohiobuck94 (Sep 24, 2002 5:56:54 PM)
rudinski :I think the secondary will improve as time goes on; what are your thoughts?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:00:04 PM)
Yeah, the corners will keep getting better. Let's face it, the most solid we have right now is Fox and he is extremely young and raw yet. That youth and inexperience title is about to leave him though. Underwood just needs reps...that will come and that will make him more confident. McNutt just needs his health. It is tough to be confident when you are banged up. Salley will keep getting better. Everett is pleasantly surprising everyone. Doss is an All'American. Nickey is afour year starter. We will be okay there
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 5:57:09 PM)
I agree with you, It's time OSU got away from the 6-4 240 lb(Kent Graham type QB, Todd Boeckman) We need a playmaker.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 5:57:15 PM)
Troy or Will? I LOVE them both.
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 5:58:43 PM)
just got in from practice, I miss anything fun?
ohiobuck94 (Sep 24, 2002 5:59:07 PM)
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:00:01 PM)
Jerry, you were at practice, right?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:00:18 PM)
Yep, I just caught about 45 minutes worth.
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:00:38 PM)
Was that Pepe Pearson you were talking to over by the exit?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:01:00 PM)
NO. it was the pride of Ironton, OH...Jermon Jackson.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:01:21 PM)
Jermon had more shake than anyone I ever played against at OSU
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:01:23 PM)
Haven't heard of him. He a recruit?
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:01:39 PM)
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 6:01:47 PM)
Jermon Jackson haven't heard that name for awhile
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:02:17 PM)
he's up there in the same class as John Ewart
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:02:24 PM)
He came in in 94 with Miller, Pace, etc. Actually scored three td's in a game as a true frosh. Then the Pepe/Wiley/George reality set in. He is a great guy though
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:02:54 PM)
Ewart, that isn't ringing a bell
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:03:28 PM)
famous tenn. running back who saw limited action
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:03:02 PM)
hello jerry. can u give your thoughts on the way our other # 35 is playing, and what has happened with AJ Hawk - have not seen him much in last 2 games?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:06:43 PM)
#35 is playing well. the key with Matt is him playing physical in the middle. He needs to violently stuff the run every time that ball is snapped. He is so gifted athletically. You won't find a smoother linebacker in the country. If you can combine that with physical play, he can write his own ticket. As far as his season thus far, I give him an A. AJ is still learning. While he has shown heart, hitting and a knack for the ball, he is still learning the more complex schemes and intricacies that Dantonio has. AJ will be fine. We just haven't had a moment to substitute as much with these thrillers. I wouldn't look too deep into it.
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:03:43 PM)
Jerry, did you see Mike D'andrea at practice today? And I saw Clarett, but never saw him running any plays. Was he in at all?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:07:21 PM)
Clarett was running around some today. Just no contact. They are thinking probably tomorrow.
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:04:41 PM)
besides offensive line what is our greatest recruiting need.
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:05:11 PM)
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:05:55 PM)
DL is pretty big. We lose 2 DL this year and 4 next. Gotta get some guys in and ready
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:06:16 PM)
whitner, T. Brown, Hiley, I would think we would land at least two to go along with underwood
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:06:44 PM)
fraser, pitcock, penton, schafer are all in the wings
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:07:57 PM)
true, but we still need to get a few for quality depth
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:08:41 PM)
O-line will be my answer every year, but I would like to see more receivers and corners. Yeah, our receivers are awesome, but you take out Carter, Vance, Jenkins, Gamble in a few years, and I don't want to take a step back. The great programs right now are loaded at receiver. Corners so we can defend these receivers.
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:09:01 PM)
i trust our coaching staff, though some things do make me wonder. AJ has come in and made some big hits/plays - was he substituting for Cie or RR, or can he play both?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:09:53 PM)
He is filling in more for Cie... but can play both
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:09:52 PM)
Jerry, why do we never throw screens or passes in the flats to our running backs? Is our OL that bad that we need everyone helping them block.
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:11:28 PM)
We need to sprinkle in the backs in the passing game. Right now, they are just protecting. Clarett has caught some balls, but not enough. I can't emphasize enough though...don't forget about the receivers. They will kill an opponent. The backs will only hurt an opponent.
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:08:00 PM)
Just wanted to comment.... Glad to here Ross vehemently stated he is going nowhere
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:08:17 PM)
Like the Ross Clarrett combo
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 6:09:33 PM)
I still think Ross will still leave next year along with another back, chattams, and Hollins
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:09:59 PM)
Ross going nowhere, he is at Ohio State for academics also my friends
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:10:18 PM)

dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:11:22 PM)
Anything think IU can make it a game?
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:11:26 PM)
Laughed at the Florida state rumor
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 6:11:35 PM)
yeah but he won't get it with Clarett here
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:12:03 PM)
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but he is here to play football.
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:12:05 PM)
I bet the farm, Ross will graduate from Ohio st.
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:12:15 PM)
does Hall seem as though he hits the holes a bit timid, and slower than MC & LR - or is it just me?
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:12:20 PM)
Also a great student people
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:12:45 PM)
Hall could write his ticket in the NFL as a corner
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:12:48 PM)
When MC lowers the BOOM he gets very low
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:12:50 PM)
The coaches love Ross. He has not been forgotten about. They go out of there way to make sure he is happy. He isn't a "grass is greener on the other side" type of guy in my mind
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:13:35 PM)
I agree Rudzinski, and people need to let it rest about him being happy
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:13:49 PM)
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:13:52 PM)
He wants to be a Buckeye
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:13:50 PM)
What's your thoughts on Hall?
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:14:42 PM)
Hall is just light. He isn't scared or timid in my mind, just light. We need him though. I haven't seen a gear like he showed in the Kent State game in a long, long time. Ross or Clarett don't have that gear. (Clarett doesn't need it though when guys can't tackle him
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:13:52 PM)
I'm also amazed at how Fox is getting little hype - he's our best DB, and that inlcudes MD!
Mobuck (Sep 24, 2002 6:15:37 PM)
true about Fox because Doss is great against the run but he isn't very good in pass coverage
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:16:07 PM)
I still take Doss.
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:15:06 PM)
IN the Wash St program, Ross had a picture in there for an academic award he had received along with Drew Carter
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:15:17 PM)
settle down bridge, OSU is an NFL farm school not a harvard
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:15:38 PM)
it appears that he is not very quick to the hole, despite his blazing speed
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:15:48 PM)
And a lot of guys care about more than football Tennesseemoe
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:15:57 PM)
Just saying, Ross is also here for an education, not a 3 yr tenure
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:16:22 PM)
then why aren't they going to harvard
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:16:27 PM)
maybe he's purposely running slower to let the play develop
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:17:18 PM)
You have to let the blocking develop somewhat. YOu will run into your pulling guard or fullback if you hit it too fast.
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:16:44 PM)
Football is king at OSU
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:16:49 PM)
Tenn you can't be so narrow and shallow can you???
tennesseemoe (Sep 24, 2002 6:19:35 PM)
the reason I am so shallow is because I live in Knoxville and I've been brainwashed about how academics matter at UT. I know for a fact UT is the most crooked academic institution in the country. Please forgive me for ever thinking guys just went to OSU to play football.
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:16:55 PM)
Because football is something they care about, and they get to play on a nationally ranked team
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:17:05 PM)
More to some athletes than just Football
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:17:23 PM)

My thoughts exactly Jerry, and Hall seems like someone who may have run into that in the past with his extra gear
ohio_pride (Sep 24, 2002 6:16:59 PM)
rud - I love MD - but to me he is not even on the same stage as Damon Moore
rudzinski (Sep 24, 2002 6:17:51 PM)
Damon Moore is for real. That guy was incredible. Doss is nice though.
bridge152 (Sep 24, 2002 6:18:05 PM)

Bam is still getting reps. He just can't drop a ball that comes his way. He will only have so many opportunities with the stable we have. Better take advantage. He shows things in practice, but so do 4, 7, and 12
dragonknight (Sep 24, 2002 6:21:13 PM)
