Maupin opening eyes

West Chester (OH) Lakota West DL Brandon Maupin is starting to draw some rave reviews. Duane Long talked with his coach, Larry Cox, to find out what the latest is.

I had a long talk with Lakota West coach Larry Cox about his star pupil, DT Brandon Maupin.

"It's amazing. Everyone is running away from him. Nobody is trying to take him on", Cox said of the 6-6 275 lb senior DT.

I asked coach Cox about Maupin's progress. He's always been a player with great upside potential, and all reports indicate Maupin is starting to realize that potential now.

"I was not happy with his first game," Cox said. "I told him flat out. Those big time schools are going to stop calling with you playing like that. Ever since then he has stepped up his game."

"Brandon is special. I see the gifts he is blessed with and I push him. I have coaches coming in here telling me he is a next next level kid. He is a Sunday player. They can't believe the body. Some that saw him early on asked if he had lost weight and Brandon has actually put on just a couple of pounds. He is right around 275 and most saw him for the first time at 270."

"It goes beyond the field with Brandon. He is the president of the marketing club here at Lakota West. Ask him what he wants, and the first thing out of his mouth is he wants a degree. He is looking to major in marketing."

"As far as his future plans are concerned, I am speaking from knowing the young man well, not from anything he has said. I think this comes down to Ohio State, Notre Dame and Tennessee. He is also considering South Carolina, Penn State and Oklahoma. They still might get visits. He has been to Ohio State and Tennessee and will go to Notre Dame for the Stanford game next week. That will be his first visit there. He was not in Columbus this weekend because of Homecoming."

"His first visit will be the weekend of Dec. 6th. He knows the importance of that first visit. I don't know if he takes all 5 visits. It could be just 3. We have not determined that yet."
