Duane is here everyone... start the questions!!! :)
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:04:53 PM)
lets do it.
Kirk (Oct 17, 2002 2:05:42 PM)
We had one asking your thoughts on Patterson. What do you think of his situation?
RossfordBuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:06:25 PM)
Well, lets hear the good news about Patterson.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:06:59 PM)
I have talked to Patterson so much that I feel very confident when I speak about his intentions. I have not changed my opinion that he will be a Buckeye. I have not changed in the least.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:07:11 PM)
Keep in mind that Miami was an official visit. He left without giving them a verbal. That is not good.
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:07:05 PM)
what kind of shoulder problem does Burgess have? How serious?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:07:52 PM)
I don't want to speculate. Tests are not done yet but it not just a bruise.
RossfordBuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:07:56 PM)
Not good for Miami. :-)
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:09:07 PM)
Right. Not good for Miami. Also he left telling others that Miami left. I like to wait a day or two and let the glow come off then get an update. Mine is the latest on Patterson and I know nobody knows him as well as I do.
Buckaubs (Oct 17, 2002 2:08:40 PM)
Duane, does this whole Clarett thing make us think twice about recruiting a running back in this class, or are we still waiting on Mr. Ferguson next year?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:09:52 PM)
I don't know if Clarett does as much as the others not being happy about playing time.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:11:10 PM)
If the others stick around it is not a crisis. I don't like to speculate on players leaving but there are rumblings about all the other backs.
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:10:11 PM)
what affect, if any do you think it has on his recruitment?
Kirk (Oct 17, 2002 2:10:11 PM)
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:11:27 PM)
It doesn't really effect Burgess recruiting. He has already been offered by every school on the planet. All he has to do is accept one.
Riptide614 (Oct 17, 2002 2:11:34 PM)
Do you think the ESPN the Magazine article about Clarett leaving early will help quell any thoughts Ross or Maurice Hall might have about transferring?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:12:24 PM)
I don't know about that. He would have to make that decision after they would make theirs on transferring.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:12:25 PM)
What do you know about Sam Baker?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:13:25 PM)
I know he is a top 20 OL nationally and in some cases top 10. I have not seen him so I can't really lay out a good opinion of him for you.
RossfordBuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:13:28 PM)
I would think the Clarett issues also will encourage Riley to stick around.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:14:38 PM)
I don't know about that. Riley I mean. In the Cincy game Clarett is injured, Hall is benched for his fumble, Ross tongue is hanging out he is so tired and they still wouldn't go to him.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:14:43 PM)
can you really read into the dates in which a recruit has a visit set. Do they tend to visit the schools they like a little more later or does it matter?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:15:38 PM)
First and last visits. There is something to it. Definitely. More often than not that is where kids end up.
Buckaubs (Oct 17, 2002 2:15:48 PM)
How would you rate the 5 guys we have now? There was some speculation last week that we may have made some rash decisions in terms of offers and that some of those guys have committed.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:17:18 PM)
Irizarry is everything he is cracked up to be. The others just have not lived up to expectations. Gonzalez has shown flashes. Someone whose opinion I respect saw Lukens have a good game. Overall they are not performing like Ohio State recruits.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:17:34 PM)
I thought I saw where Whitner was visiting OSU last (I believe he has 4 of 5 dates set) I just wondered if that was a good sign..
Riptide614 (Oct 17, 2002 2:17:40 PM)
Duane, have any OSU wide receiver recruits made comments about OSU running 5-wide and more spread formations? Has that generated any interest among receivers that OSU is recruiting? Is OSU getting a better reputation as a school that will now start throwing the ball when called for?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:18:35 PM)
The WR recruits I talk to look at the NFL players coming out of Ohio State.
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:18:52 PM)
It seems like we are in on many of the top DB's in the country. If we are going to take 3 or 4, any ideas which ones the coaches would want? Which would you like to see as Buckeyes?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:20:21 PM)
I think we are seeing 4 names. Whitner, Youboty, Hiley and Brown. The fact that they really like Mike Phillips but have not offered tells me a lot and that they did not offer Tribble and Thatcher.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:20:26 PM)
Could Lukens bulk up and play LB?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:21:20 PM)
My contact says no. I asked and he doesn't feel like Lukens has the frame to be an LB. He sees a Donnie Nickey body.
Buckaubs (Oct 17, 2002 2:21:25 PM)
Are we recruiting Bush as a QB and if so do we need two in this class with Smith, Zwick, Krenzel and McMullen ahead of them. Are they hoping to convince Bush to play elsewhere?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:22:43 PM)
I have not seen Bush play QB, so I can't compare him to the current QBs. I think the Buckeyes are just recruiting him as an athlete and see what happens. QB is the most important position on the field, so if he can play there they will let him. If not I think he can be convinced to move.
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:22:49 PM)
Those 4 DB's sound like they might be the equivalent of last years linebacking corp.
dragonknight (Oct 17, 2002 2:22:50 PM)
Is Ira Guilford from NJ still a guy we're looking at for a DB?
Buckaubs (Oct 17, 2002 2:22:53 PM)
I notice you didn't mention Guilford. Is that because he projects as a safety?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:24:03 PM)
Guilford is a safety. He said he has talked to coach Tressel. I have learned that is a sign the Buckeyes are serious about a player when they get a chance to talk to coach Tressel. An in-school visit is an even bigger deal.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:24:13 PM)
just because of the CB problems, is Whitner the guy we need most in this class?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:26:21 PM)
Holler is the guy we need most but Whitner would be a serious # 2 in this class. The corner position must be upgraded. A badly damaged Richard McNutt and a safety, Dustin Fox, were the starting corners. That says a lot about the current corners. Underwood is the only one I have any faith in. he is going to be an NFL player but you need at least 2. I say you need 4 with all these spread offenses.
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:26:26 PM)
Speaking of Linebackers, it doesn't seem like there is a wealth of talent out there this year. I know Jefferson is a stud, but who else would be a good get for the Bucks?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:29:16 PM)
I see LB as a need position. I am not at all comfortable with Pagac, O'Neill and Bond in the 2-deep. Tavares Gooden is one. I have not seen him but I know he is a player Jamie Newberg thinks he is too tight in the hips to be an LB and too small to be a DE, the position he has played up until this year. There is a JUCO LB that the Buckeyes are apparently looking at that has some impressive measurables.
moorebucks (Oct 17, 2002 2:29:21 PM)
Who will be the next to commit?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:30:43 PM)
I don't speculate on the next commit. It causes too much trouble if it doesn't happen. Fans panic and think a player is not coming here. Sometimes nasty things have been said. I avoid speculating on who is next.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:30:52 PM)
any word on Holler?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:32:09 PM)
He likes how he is being recruited and is very aware of the depth problems. I like Ohio State's chances with him. He gets to talk to Daniels, Bollman and Tressel every call.
Buckaubs (Oct 17, 2002 2:33:08 PM)
It sounds like we are moving in the right direction with the DB's, but where are we with the big OL, which is huge for us. How many do we take and are we going to get the quality we need?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:35:23 PM)
Now that is looks like we will see at least 18, I think we see 4 OLs. If we see it bump to 20 I could see 5. I like where the Buckeyes are with Holler. Baker just told me last night Ohio State is one of his top 3. Andrew Bain is likely to visit. It is starting to look a lot better. We are seeing more top names in the last month. Some headway is being made. Add 2 of these players to Buford and that is a nice class. 3 would be a great class.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:35:27 PM)
I hope this is the right name but what about Reggie Smith from Cleveland as a LB?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:37:12 PM)
Smith is getting some attention right now but there is no offer. I like a lot about Smith but he needs tape as an LB. He was a DE until now. He probably doesn't get real hot until the film gets out on him.
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:37:18 PM)
On the OL, you seem sure of Buford becoming a buck. Is he a project? Also, do you think the two OL from Ely (Bain and Wimbs) are seriously considering us? Could either of them step into two deep?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:38:55 PM)
Buford may take some time. I talked to Bain. He sounds serious to me. I don't know about Wimbs, but Bain is an immediate impact player. I would go so far as to say Bain would be the biggest OL recruit at Ohio State since Pace. He is big time with a capital B.
RossfordBuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:39:10 PM)
Aside from injuries, what kind of year is Burgess having? In the game I saw last year (WH v. Whitmer) Burgess stuck out to me more than Clarett! Seeing how Clarett is doing says a lot to me about Burgess.
knoxmoe (Oct 17, 2002 2:39:13 PM)
Duane, what is the latest on Prescot Burgess. Why are we losing ground on him.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:42:00 PM)
I think it is the safety thing. Last year when I first ask coach McDaniels about Burgess I asked him about playing LB and coach told me Burgess does not want to hear that. I also think there is too much specualtion about it. My contact is not as worried as some are. That is what I go on.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:42:53 PM)
Burgess is not having a bad year but he is not having a great year. The injuries have been a problem.
dragonknight (Oct 17, 2002 2:42:07 PM)
PSU still the team to beat for Holler?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:44:48 PM)
A month ago I say PSU is the team to beat for Holler. Now I can't say that. He knows so much about this team. Let me put it to you this way. If this kid knows as much about all the teams he is considering as he knows about Ohio State, he is the most prepared recruit I have ever come in contact with.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:45:04 PM)
Will Ohio St. pursue Moe Dampeer?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:47:10 PM)
At this point I don't think so. There has been no contact as yet that I am aware of. The fact that Dampeer was saying he wanted to hear from the Buckeyes but to my knowledge has not tells me they have little hope for his grade situation.
the mayor (Oct 17, 2002 2:47:23 PM)
Does it sound like Wimbs and Bain would like to play at the next level together? Also, Wimbs is a name that wasn't being thrown around nationally. Have you talked to any sources in Fla. about his progress and why he's become such a hot commodity as of late?
Hoosier Buck (Oct 17, 2002 2:47:28 PM)
I heard that Bain, Wimbs and another teammate all want to go to Miami.....anything to refute this?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:47:59 PM)
Bain told me flat out he wants to play with Wimbs.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:49:14 PM)
Nobody in Fla has said anything about what has happened with Wimbs that Ohio State, Fla State and Miami have all offered. I have always said OLs develop late.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:49:45 PM)
I heard the rumor but what I heard is all 3 want to play together.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:51:28 PM)
I mean those 3 want to play together somewhere not necessarily at Miami. Bain just said he and Wimbs.
nbuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:49:28 PM)
Duane what do you think about this sudden interest about Mike DeLuca? It seems Jim Bollman's been calling him as of late?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:50:26 PM)
Great body that they think can develop. I think we are seeing some names pop up late because of good seasons and because it looks like there are going to be more scholarships than we thought.
mbuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:50:46 PM)
Could you comment on the progress of Stan White Jr. and the other tight end from West Virginia whose name escapes me. I realize they will be redshirted but would like an update.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:53:12 PM)
I have heard a lot of speculation about Coleman moving to the OL. I think it highly likely it happens. I have heard not one word about White. I doubt he stays at TE. He was listed at 6-3 and 225, which is not ideal TE size to begin with, and since then we have found out he is not that big. He is like 6-1. I suspect he moves back to LB or FB.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:53:26 PM)
How worried should Buckeye fans be after David Patterson's visit to Miami?
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:53:36 PM)
David Patterson says in a Pool article " ...if I didn't have the Miami scholarship offer, I would have committed to Ohio State already. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to take a look at the national champs" also, "I might make a commitment before visit to fla on 12-13.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:54:02 PM)
I'm not worried at all and you shouldn't be. They had their shot.
OTC (Oct 17, 2002 2:54:10 PM)
coleman is a big dude
OTC (Oct 17, 2002 2:54:11 PM)
i have class with him and all the other players always yell o line at him
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 2:54:23 PM)
As far as Bain is concerned, he seemed like such a lock for Miami, not too long ago. With so many top players looking at them, could there be a numbers crunch?
Hoosier Buck (Oct 17, 2002 2:54:29 PM)
RE: Bain, Wimbs and Mate make three! One day we might see the" STAR" demand the whole team play together!
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:56:38 PM)
I think you hit on something with Bain. When I last spoke to him he talked Miami. This time he was talking about Fla State who has some holes to fill like Ohio State on the offensive line, and said it is not a matter of if he visits Ohio State it is a matter of when, and said not one word about Miami.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 2:55:02 PM)
do the Buckeyes have a chance in landing DeMarcus Tyler? Would he be an OT or DT?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:58:23 PM)
Tyler was pretty much down to 3 schools and Ohio State is one of them. He wants to enroll is January so he will be making a decision soon. Someone asked me who would be the next commit. I don't know if Tyler will be a Buckeye but he will be the next player the Buckeyes want who will be making a decision.
Buckaubs (Oct 17, 2002 2:58:36 PM)
What is Delbert Ferguson like? Is he the second coming of Mo C or something all together different?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 2:59:31 PM)
Clarett is power/speed. Ferguson is speed/power. Think Robert Smith but bigger and stronger.
Mech420 (Oct 17, 2002 2:59:38 PM)
Duane...I am sorry if this has already been asked but what is the situation with Ernie Wheelright? Do you think the Buckeyes will offer or have they already?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:00:50 PM)
They will not offer him until he gets a test score. He is set up to take it on the 26th.
OTC (Oct 17, 2002 3:00:02 PM)
Robert Smith without the hands.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:01:12 PM)
Delbert has had trouble handling the ball this year as a receiver.
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:03:00 PM)
Williams loved it here. Absolutely loved it. It wasn't until his visit here that he officially de-committed from his verbal to NC State. The Buckeyes stand a great chance with him. I think it comes down to Ohio State and Tennessee. The rumblings out of Louisville make me think if Bush decides to be a football player it will be Ohio State. If he wants to make basketball a priority it will be Louisville. I say he chooses football.
OTC (Oct 17, 2002 3:04:18 PM)
I talked to Williams and what he told me made me very excited for OSU.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 3:03:30 PM)
Any word on Dan Mazan?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:03:49 PM)
Mazan update will be posted soon. he has not been offered.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 3:03:37 PM)
Does Wesley Jefferson visit Columbus?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:03:58 PM)
I think Jefferson visits.
Mech420 (Oct 17, 2002 3:03:45 PM)
Do you think Michael Bush will come to OSU and what position do you think he plays? Is he open to the other mentioned positions (WR/S) or will absolutely play no other position other than QB?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:04:31 PM)
I think Bush gets a shot at QB. I think WR would be next on the list.
blufftonbuck (Oct 17, 2002 3:04:02 PM)
What is your prediction about the number of scholarships OSU will offer?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:04:56 PM)
I think the Buckeyes end up with 18-20 with 20 being highly likely.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 3:04:58 PM)
Thanks for the knowledge Duane!!
Mech420 (Oct 17, 2002 3:05:09 PM)
worthabuck (Oct 17, 2002 3:05:11 PM)
Bman (Oct 17, 2002 3:05:27 PM)
Would he be the best QB on the team?
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:05:53 PM)
I think Troy Smith is the best QB on the team.
BuckNutty (Oct 17, 2002 3:06:09 PM)
Mech420 (Oct 17, 2002 3:06:34 PM)
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:05:33 PM)
See you all again soon. Great talking with the Buckeye family.
blufftonbuck (Oct 17, 2002 3:05:41 PM)
Duane (Oct 17, 2002 3:06:47 PM)
I think the Buckeyes handle Wisconsin easily by the way. See ya next time.
