Florida's Rodney Smith Likes The Buckeyes

Archbishop Carroll [Miami] receiver Rodney Smith is a name that is just beginning to hit the recruiting radar. Smith is adding offers daily and it appears the Ohio State Buckeyes are entering the race to land this exciting prospect. Bill Greene has the latest on this South Florida player.

Archbishop Carroll [Miami] wide receiver Rodney Smith is a player that is on the rise from a recruiting standpoint. Smith, 6-foot-5 and 190-pounds, is adding to his offer list daily and is blowing up, as his film is getting into the college recruiters' hands.

"Things are really taking off for me right now and I'm starting to get offers," Smith reported. "I just got offered by Mississippi today. Coaches from Louisville and Ohio State tell me I'll be getting offered by them soon. I've also got offers from Central Florida, Southern Florida, Florida International, Central Michigan and Minnesota. All of them have come in recently and things are heating up finally."

Although Smith is starting to hear from Miami, Florida and Florida State, he is not opposed to leaving the state to play college football.

"I like Miami a lot," Smith said. "They are getting back to where they were in the past. Florida hasn't been recruiting me too hard and neither has Florida State, to this point. Miami had two coaches in the school last week asking about me. It seems like things are just now starting to really get going as my film gets out there. I have run a 4.5 forty-yard time and I have good size. I have no problem leaving the state to go to college at all. I just want to find a great school where I can fit in well."

Smith is hoping Ohio State might be another school willing to extend him an offer. He has had extensive contact with the Buckeyes recently.

"I've been talking with Coach [Luke] Fickell from Ohio State recently," Smith stated. "He said they like me a lot and they need to see my film from my junior year. Coach Fickell said they are hearing great things about me and they are very interested. He's going to have me talk to Jim Tressel this week, so we can get to know each other. He said for me to expect an offer soon after that. I like Ohio State a lot, especially since they just signed Terrelle Pryor. Having a quarterback like Pryor makes me look at Ohio State even more than I already have been. I'm trying to get up to Ohio State for the spring game. I haven't decided yet, but I'll know for sure in a few days if I'm going or not. I probably will be there."

Smith listed his five favorite schools as USC, LSU, Michigan, South Florida and Ohio State in no particular order, but insisted the Buckeyes would move to the front if they extend an offer.

"If Ohio State were to offer me, they would go to the top of my five schools instantly," Smith admitted. "Like I told you, I have no problem leaving the state of Florida at all. I'm just looking for the right school where I fit in the best. I want to make an impact and be on the field early. With my size and speed, I think I can play anywhere right away. I know Brandon McGee, from Florida, has an Ohio State offer and he likes them a lot. We are playing together in a tournament this weekend. Having other players from Florida at Ohio State would make it very comfortable for me to go there. Ohio State just received my film and they want me to call them in a couple days. They just want to check it out and make sure I'm what they're looking for, and they said they will let me know what's going on."

Smith caught 35 passes for 627 yards and scored 8 touchdowns in 2007. He also stars on defense at Archbishop Carroll.

"Most schools are recruiting me as a receiver," he said. "I also play free safety. I had 35 tackles and ran two interceptions back for touchdowns. I prefer to play wide receiver because I'm better at it and my skills are more suited for that position. South Florida is the only school that mentioned something about me playing free safety. I want to play early and I want to go to a great school that can help me get to the next level. I work hard in the classroom and have a 3.3 GPA and I'll be getting my test results in a week or so."

Rodney Smith is a name to remember over the coming months. He is a player that is just starting to garner a lot of interest from a recruiting standpoint and he will be a player we will follow very closely at Scout.com.
