Travis Howard Excited to Begin Buckeye Career

Travis Howard was not the highest rated player in the 2008 Ohio State recruiting class, but he could end up being one of the best. The Miami native will be enrolling at Ohio State next week and he talked about his expectations for his Buckeye career. Bill Greene has the latest on Howard.

Miami (Fla.) Dr. Michael Krop defensive back Travis Howard is less than a week away from starting his college career at Ohio State. Howard, 6-foot-1 and 180-pounds, is more than ready to get this phase of his life started.

"I leave for Ohio State next Saturday and I can't wait," Howard began. "I'm ready to move on to bigger and better things. My mom will be going with me and she'll be staying with me for a few days. I know she's going to miss me but she knows how great of an opportunity this is for me. I'll be traveling with Etienne Sabino. We are flying on the same flight."

Etienne Sabino, also from Krop High, is another Buckeye prized recruit who enrolled at Ohio State in March. Sabino participated in spring football and has passed on his knowledge of the Buckeye system to his former high school teammate.

"Oh man, Sabino calls me every day and tells me everything that's going on," Howard reported. "He mostly tells me how hard the workouts are and how much he's loving it. I'm pretty jealous that he got up there before I did. Coach [Luke] Fickell told me we will be having a meeting next Sunday for everyone and they will lay out what is expected for us to do over the summer. I know we will be working out with the strength coach and doing seven-on-seven drills. I can't wait to get started. I know I have a lot to learn."

Howard will be playing cornerback and he is excited to be able to learn from coaches he respects and admires.

"The coaching staff is a big part of why I chose Ohio State," he admitted. "I know I can play at this level and I know these coaches can refine my skills. I'm hoping to get a little bit of playing time in my first year. I want to learn the playbook and develop my technique. If the coaches want me to red-shirt, I will do that, but I'm hoping to play at least on special teams. I bring a lot of size and speed to the position. I love covering great receivers in man coverage. That is my strength. I need to work on sticking my foot in the ground and exploding to the football, and that will come with improved technique. Sabino told me the difference between high school and college is that the quality of coaching is so much better. I know I have a lot to learn but I'm focused on doing whatever I have to do to be a success. Sabino loves it at Ohio State so much and I know I will too. He told me how hard all the players work and he loves that. In high school all the players didn't work real hard all the time and I hated that. Sabino told me everybody works hard at Ohio State and everybody is focused on winning the national championship. I love that."

Howard is looking forward to getting to Columbus and moving in with his new roommates. He is aware that he will be living with the most famous Buckeye recruit of the 2008 class.

"I will be living with Terrelle Pryor, Lamaar Thomas and DeVier Posey," he stated. "Posey came down to Miami and hung out with me last spring. We are real cool. I know being with Terrelle will be like living with a rockstar and it's going to be a lot of fun. Sabino and I are having a little celebration today for our high school graduation. There will be a lot of Florida high school players around. You know we will be talking Ohio State football all day long."
