You can't spell Buckeyes without BCS this year!

YOU CAN'T SPELL "BUCKEYES" WITHOUT "BCS" THIS YEAR!

Ohio State will play for the national championship in Tempe on January 3. There. I said it. And it feels good! Who will we play? Maybe the Miami Hurricanes but, hey – they have to qualify first to meet our Buckeyes. That's right. We're 13-0 and we're already in. Miami's just 10-0 and they still have to beat Syracuse and Virginia Tech. And they have to apologize for all those squeaker wins over teams like FSU, West Virginia and Pitt. Think about that Trev and Mark and, oh, never mind…

Whereas the Bucks are 2500 miles, six weeks and 60 minutes away from the national championship. And we know where we stand. But let's take a quick inventory, anyway. I've given it a few delirious minutes and I think I know what the B-U-C-K-E-Y-E-S stand for this season.

B stands for Big. Maybe even the Biggest. The previous "biggest game" I ever saw at Ohio Stadium was the 50-14 blowout win over Michigan in 1968. Saturday's game looms even larger for me. Why? Because it shows that the Buckeyes are Back! No more "Can't win the big one". We've been winning the big one all season. Can't beat Michigan? We've done it two years in a row and the first time Back-to-Back in twenty years. And we pulled it off last weekend despite some truly Butt-Ugly spots by the officials and some Bizarre time-keeping. But then again, maybe I am a little Biased…

U stands for Undefeated. That's right – 13-0. Undefeated against Michigan, as well, for the entire millennia. 2-0. And even though we have been favored in all the games this year, doesn't it seem as if our boys have been the perpetual Underdogs? Yet, we've won. And we've covered (most of the time). Many folks didn't think it was going to be a defensive struggle Saturday, as the odds-makers listed the over-under at 41 points. You should have taken the Under…

C stands for Class and Character. Not only for our team but also for our Coach. Jim Tressel was the epitome of Calm, Cool, and Classy; quite in contrast to the Meatchicken coach, Lloyd Carr. But we've come to expect that. The team plays the way the coach coaches. And that's why we're playing for the Championship. Incidentally, we wouldn't be playing for the BCS goodies if it wasn't for the biggest "C": Maurice Clarett. Let's face it – with Maurice in the game, we have an "A" offense. Without him? Well, I'd give us a "C"…

K stands for Krenzel. And can anyone stand taller right now? You can keep your Gessers and your Kingsbury's and, yes, even your Dorseys. Because this Special K keeps bringing back the W's. And I shouldn't have to spell that one out for you…

Finally, E-Y-E-S stands for the 200,000 EYES that were brimming with pride and tears Saturday afternoon. Ecstatic, we were. But there were few dry eyes in that house or in any of the Buckeye houses worldwide. And those EYES are all looking forward again. Looking forward to Tempe, to next season and to many seasons to come. The EYES have been dotted because Coach T has come across for the minions.

The BUCKs? We are the same team, the same kids from Will Allen to Justin Zwick. But we are also different now. Different somehow. We are the same, But-Still Undefeated Cardiac Kids.

And that's enough. I stood for four hours on Saturday. I think I'll sit for a spell…

Wait. One more time: OH-IO. And "B"? Again? It stands for Beautiful. Just Beautiful, Baby!
