"There's a lot of people," Jamel Turner stated.
"There is a lot of different types of fans around here trying to get me to go to places."
Then there are people taking Turner places.
On the Ursuline High football coaching staff, a former teammate and now young assistant coach, happened to have an extra ticket to a big September college football game.
"He's a Notre Dame fan," Turner began. "He told me he has an extra ticket to the Michigan game (Sept. 13th), and he asked me if I want to go see the game. I said yeah, I'll go.
"He's been there. He says it's beautiful. Everyone does."
There go those fans again.
Turner, who racked up an amazing 23 sacks as a sophomore in helping Ursuline reach the Division V state championship game, holds scholarship offers from Ohio State, Michigan State, Akron, Illinois, Wisconsin and South Carolina. There could be a few more, but Turner forgot to pick up his mail from his head coach following practice on Tuesday.
There are several other programs showing interest, and school's like Turner in that hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker role.
"My speed, capability to work in space," Turner said of what college recruiters say they like about him.
Turner hopes to hear more from Notre Dame.
"That's a great academics school, I know that much," Turner said. He has a 2.9 GPA.
"When I go up there, I just want to see how their defense is. How there defense is, and their football program, and the excitement their fans bring to the game, and the environment."
Turner has taken trips to Illinois, Wisconsin and of course Ohio State. He'll be at the Buckeyes-Penn State game later this season. That and the Notre Dame-Michigan game are the only two unofficial visits that Turner has scheduled.
At the end of his sophomore season, Turner started receiving heavy interest from top-notch college programs. He has yet to fully throw himself and much of his attention into the recruiting process, just taking things slow and in stride.
"I still have a whole nother year to go," Turner explained. "Anything can happen. I could get injured, I could relocate to another school or something like that.
"I'm just going to be looking for a good coaching staff, a good football program and I want to go to a good school, not just for football, but I want to go to school to get a good education because that's why I'm going to school."
