Is Glenville's Edwards Next Buckeye Offer?

Cleveland Glenville defensive back Mike Edwards has put together quite an impressive offer list so far in 2008. Edwards, one of the top prospects in the state, holds offers from Michigan, Illinois, West Virginia, and many others. Edwards visited Ohio State last Saturday for the Minnesota game. Bill Greene has the latest on the Edwards recruitment.

Cleveland Glenville's Mike Edwards attended the Ohio State-Minnesota game last Saturday with several of his teammates as guests of the Buckeyes. Edwards, one of the top defensive back prospects in the state, spoke about his visit and where things stand between himself and Ohio State.

"Recruiting is going great for me so far," Edwards stated. "I visited Ohio State last Saturday and had a great time. I had some time to spend with the Ohio State coaches, and I'm hoping something good comes out of it pretty soon. It was good being able to talk to Coach [Jim] Tressel again. He said to keep working hard in the classroom, and to keep my grades up where they are now. They are talking about offering after they see more senior film. I just have to keep working hard, and continue to put up numbers out on the field. Coach [Ted] Ginn keeps telling me to keep doing what I'm doing on the field, and good things will happen for me."

Edwards has put together a tremendous offer list, and recently picked up another impressive Big Ten offer.

"I was offered by Michigan a while ago, and that was big for me," he said. "They don't offer too many Glenville kids, so that offer was real big for me. They told me I'm having a big senior year, and it seems like a lot of schools have seen that. I'm pretty honored to have been offered by Michigan."

Edwards admitted he is hoping for an Ohio State offer, although he insisted it would not be a certainty that he would accept immediately.

"I talk to Coach [Taver] Johnson a lot, and he always tells me I'm still in the picture," Edwards said. "Being from Glenville helps a lot with Ohio State because we've sent so many players to Ohio State that have been successful. They are going to keep evaluating me throughout the year. I think I'm a lot better football player this year than I was last year. I know Ohio State is just about filled up, but they said they have room to add a few more players. I'm in no hurry to make a decision, and I'm willing to wait it out until the end of our season. I know Ohio State is looking at me as an athlete, and they did mention playing slot receiver to me last Saturday. Position doesn't matter to me, because I just want to find out where I fit in, and try to make a difference. Even if Ohio State would offer me, there is no guarantee I would take it on the spot. I want to take my trips and be very selective.

Edwards has narrowed his list to five schools, and will be taking official visits to each one.

"I have my list of five schools, and these are the visits I'm going to take," he continued. "My five are Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and West Virginia. I have offers from all of them but Ohio State. I want the Ohio State offer because they're one of the top programs in the country, and I want to have that option. I'm very happy with all the schools that have offered me, and it will be a very tough final choice. "
