Comparing OSU Football and Women's Basketball

We'll start finding out what's new in '09 at 6 p.m. tonight when the Buckeyes take on No. 9 seed Illinois on the Big Ten Network, but in the meantime I thought I would explore something that struck me while thinking about what the cagers have been through the past couple of seasons.

To be elite, teams must win the big games. No one, not Ohio State women's basketball head coach Jim Foster or his football counterpart Jim Tressel, would dispute that, but there are some extenuating circumstances for the women's basketball program – not unlike the football team, when you get right down to it – that make a subpar postseason record at least somewhat more understandable, and I hope I was able to present those smartly in a blog post yesterday.

Two seasons ago, no one else was ready to follow Jessica Davenport into battle as a co-lieutenant, same as tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells last season for Jim Tressel on the football field.

Beyond that, though, you might be surprised to know how similar the situations are, when you get down to it.
