Smith, one of the top receiver prospects in the class of 2011, has officially transferred to Massillon and will be one of the top threats for the Tigers in 2009.
"Devin is officially at Massillon," his father, Andre Simpson, told BuckeyeSports.com. "I'm really happy to see him in that program. I played football and basketball for Massillon and I've always wanted to see my boy play for the Tigers. Next season, it will be a reality."
Smith recently competed in a camp held by the University of Akron. Although one of the youngest players participating, Smith's talent was clearly evident.
He ran consecutive forty-yard dashes under 4.55, and turned in a great shuttle time as well. Smith measured in at 6-1 and weighed 175 pounds.
Smith, who is also a star basketball player, exhibited great hands and was explosive running his routes. As a sophomore at Akron Ellet in 2008, he had over 800 yards receiving and caught 12 touchdown passes. He added over 600 yards rushing, scoring six touchdowns on the ground.
"I really liked competing in this camp," Smith said. "I'm also going to camps at Toledo, Indiana and Ohio State. I don't really follow recruiting at all. I'm just hoping to be able to play football or basketball in college. I'm really excited to be playing for Massillon. I know it's going to be a lot harder than playing for Ellet, but I think I'm ready for the challenge."
The class of 2011 is just now starting to take shape and it appears the wide receiver position is well stocked. Devin Smith is a player we will continue to track throughout the 2009 season.
