Duke Nabs Tomlinson

Duke University pulled in a highly rated prospect from the Midwest when three-star offensive tackle Laken Tomlinson issued his verbal commitment. Scout.com caught up with Tomlinson and found out why he will become a Blue Devil.

While trying to pick a school, Laken Tomlinson said he wanted to find an environment high on academics where he felt at home with the coaching staff and players.

He has found his home at Duke.

The 6-5, 285-pound offensive tackle prospect from Chicago Lane Tech has issued a verbal commitment to join the Blue Devils next season.

"I made a commitment to Duke University," he said. "When I made my visit there, I really loved the coaching staff and the players. They were all good people. Duke has a reputation for academics, and that's one I can't pass up."

Tomlinson is the 13th verbal member of Duke's class of 2010 and the second offensive lineman to join the class. Scout ranks him as the No. 66 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 10 prospect in Illinois.

His final decision primarily came down to Duke and Illinois with Ohio State also in the mix, he said.

"All those three are definitely good colleges, but Duke got me," he said. "It's like a boulder off my chest."

Tomlinson said he actually issued his verbal commitment last week, but word is just now getting out.

A starter since his sophomore season, Tomlinson earned all-city and all-conference honors as a junior.
