Hi everyone... feel free to fire questions away for Duane.
mjw1200 (Jan 30, 2003 3:08:04 PM)
should we be worried about mcclover?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:09:30 PM)
I'm worried about McClover. This is the second time he has wavered and we are so close to signing day.
Boe master of the universe (Jan 30, 2003 3:09:34 PM)
Whats the deal with Michael Bush, is Fulmer really wooing him in, or does bush just want to wait until signing day?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:10:06 PM)
If Bush doesn't put up a test score it won't matter.
Kirk (Jan 30, 2003 3:10:33 PM)
Tough to tell on Bush lately.
ronbuckss (Jan 30, 2003 3:10:40 PM)
My final 4 our Bush Crable Lee and Frost how close am I Duane
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:11:22 PM)
I think that final 4 may be accurate and it would be a fine way to wrap up this class.
buckaubs (Jan 30, 2003 3:11:30 PM)
Duane, what are the chances that Boeckman gets drafted instead of playing football?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:12:51 PM)
I hear mixed reviews about Boeckman the baseball player. Some say it is his best sport. Others say he is a good but not great player. I have never seen him so I can't say. Don't know enough about the sport even if I did see him.
So.Fla.Buck (Jan 30, 2003 3:13:09 PM)
I am a little concerned about the WR position. Carter, Gamble and Jenkins Are all gone after this year I believe. That leaves Angelo Chattams, Roy Hall, Santonio Holmes along with John Hollins and Mike Young left. Why was there little effort put into that posistion this recruiting year? Could we still get Wheelwright?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:15:01 PM)
There was great effort put into adding more WRs. The Buckeyes went hard after Jayson Swain, Adarius Bowman and Jesse Holley just to name a few. I think next year is the year to add WRs anyway. We could wait another year. Besides, wait until you see Hiley.
mjw1200 (Jan 30, 2003 3:15:18 PM)
i heard a quote that bush is just wanting to concentrate on quarterback, does this hurt our chances with him? i got the feeling he would eventually be a different position at OSU
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:16:41 PM)
I think Bush wanting to play QB and the Buckeyes going after him initially as an RB is going to hurt a little but the lack of depth at Tennessee is the real problem. He is the odds on starter in 2 years. He can't say that here.
Maurice (Jan 30, 2003 3:16:53 PM)
We are waiting on several people who have suspect test scores. Do we take one?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:18:10 PM)
I think it depends on the coaches feel for their intelligence. Bush and especially Jean are highly intelligent and articulate.
LoganBuck (Jan 30, 2003 3:18:22 PM)
What is the deal with the new score requirements that were suggested a while ago? I thought that the ACT requirement was going away.
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:19:13 PM)
I have not looked it over to see how the new score formula works so I can't say.
murph (Jan 30, 2003 3:19:19 PM)
Is there a question re: Bush's academics?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:19:45 PM)
Bush has not put up a qualifying score.
Glassman (Jan 30, 2003 3:19:54 PM)
Do we expect anymore "gray-shirts"?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:21:21 PM)
There is an offer to Grassle but he turned it down. If there are any others I am unaware of them. I know it was talked about with Valentine but I don't think that is going to happen now that Hall is staying and Guilford is onboard for emergency depth.
LoganBuck (Jan 30, 2003 3:20:45 PM)
Who is Charles Babb? Is that Mr. Bucknuts? Has his true identity been revealed?
Kirk (Jan 30, 2003 3:20:45 PM)
Charles Babb = Banished Buck. Mr. Bucknuts still has a ? over his face...
BuckNutty (Jan 30, 2003 3:21:37 PM)
Duane, will it be a huge loss if we don't get Crable?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:23:23 PM)
Tough question on Crable. At the end of the year he was probably playing better than anyone in Ohio. On the other hand I still get uncomfortable looking at that frame and seeing a player who really doesn't have a position. If either Burgess or Jefferson was onboard I would say no, it is not a big loss. With only Smith in the fold I would like to take a chance on Crable.
phouse77 (Jan 30, 2003 3:23:32 PM)
Is it likely that Tressel will oversign this class in light of the new rules?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:24:36 PM)
A phone call I just received says if the players want to come we can take 6 more so yes, think the oversign rule is in play this year.
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:25:49 PM)
From what I have been told we cannot take him. His grades are not good enough. Same with Wheelwright.
Boe master of the universe (Jan 30, 2003 3:25:59 PM)
How is next year going to end up recruiting in ohio, a lot of people are saying the state is loaded and with the national championship that should help. If so, what do we need to focus on next year?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:27:22 PM)
Top heavy class. A number of stars but not great depth. We are still reviewing tape and I have 2 players in the last 3 days that will be top 100 and probably top 50. Offensive line. A great class and a great need.
Maurice (Jan 30, 2003 3:27:33 PM)
Duane, are we too thin at LB?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:29:30 PM)
I think we are too thin. I am not confident at all in Pagac, O'Neill and Bond in the 2-deep. Hopefully White moves back over. That gives the Buckeyes a solid 5 and maybe we can count on Pug as a backup if necessary. Hopefully we will see Cliff Reynolds get out for the Marines and be able to shake off the rust.
bake34 (Jan 30, 2003 3:29:41 PM)
out of the juniors next year in high school who do you think will commit first to the bucks
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:29:54 PM)
Ted Ginn jr.
mjw1200 (Jan 30, 2003 3:30:08 PM)
what are our chances with kerr the linebacker out of indiana, our we recruiting him real hard?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:31:13 PM)
We are not recruiting Kerr and I understand he is headed to Notre Dame. To my knowledge the Buckeyes never went back after him.
LoganBuck (Jan 30, 2003 3:31:33 PM)
Duane, With the outstanding crop of Juniors coming who do you see as locks for OSU?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:32:46 PM)
I am not ready to say any are locks because we have seen only 2 offers for sure right now. Of those 2, Ted Ginn and Fred Davis, I feel both are going to be Buckeyes.
Kirk (Jan 30, 2003 3:33:38 PM)
The good news -- this chat has set the record so far... 55 people in here right now. The bad news... we are way backed up with questions, so if you post any from here on in, I can't guarantee they'll get posted. But we're going to keep plugging away...
ronbuckss (Jan 30, 2003 3:33:54 PM)
Dareus Hiley can play wr as well, is that how you feel Duane
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:36:06 PM)
Coach Ginn said he is going to be a WR here. I prefer him as a WR.
Seabus (Jan 30, 2003 3:36:22 PM)
Smith, Scott, Anderson, Fraser backed up by Richardson, Green, Pitcock, and Kudla. Is this the best DL two deep Ohio St has ever had?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:38:26 PM)
There are a lot of untested kids in there. I think it is the most talent and the fastest. We will see if they are the best.
Clarity (Jan 30, 2003 3:38:33 PM)
Is there still a chance we can land Graessle? I'm usually pro-walkon for P/Ks, but everything I read about this kid is glowingly positive. Have to admit our P game scares me a bit next year.
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:39:42 PM)
The last I heard there is no chance with Graessle but if they come in with a full offer and this year I suspect he will come around.
Maurice (Jan 30, 2003 3:39:49 PM)
Duane, any chance with Burgess still? Is he still in contact with the coaches?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:40:48 PM)
I was told 2 weeks ago Burgess has not been contacted. He will go to Michigan. That is, if he qualifies.
natlchamps (Jan 30, 2003 3:40:55 PM)
duane, your take on frost? what exactly is the deal? has he been open to play on D or do you possibly even see him getting the chance to compete w/ irizarry at TE? your thoughts on this and will he sign?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:42:43 PM)
He called a presser for tomorrow. If he says he is going to Iowa that would be a first. I have never heard of a player calling a presser to say he is going with his original commitment. I think he can play either. I think we see him moved around early on and find the right spot for him.
buckaubs (Jan 30, 2003 3:43:07 PM)
Duane, what is the LB class looking like in Ohio next year. I know we are all in a panic about OL and LB. I know the OL looks great in Ohio next year, so who are the key LB's and are any Buckeye leans?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:45:05 PM)
Outside of Freeman there is no real big timer. I like Kevin Looman from Canton Glen Oak. I like Hoobler as an LB but he is likely to grow into a DE. Pepper Johnsons son is a pretty good looking LB that I have heard about but not seen yet.
DenBuck (Jan 30, 2003 3:45:21 PM)
Is the consensus that we still have 4 slots to give?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:50:03 PM)
It looks like 3/6. 4 minutes before the chat started I was told that we could take that many with the oversign rule.
Boe master of the universe (Jan 30, 2003 3:47:45 PM)
Whats you take on recruiting 5 DBs, lukens, hiley whitner, youboty, and guilford? Why so many instead of other positions or is Tressel putting together a speed defense?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:50:21 PM)
I think it is much needed. Look at the DB corps and look at how many spread teams we saw. It is going to be the great equalizer. I heard Tennessee Titan coach Jeff Fisher, one of the NFLs great defensive minds say that you now need 4 top cover men. Last year we had a safety and a corner out there starting.
nbuck (Jan 30, 2003 3:50:38 PM)
duane,do you expect james lee to verbal to osu on wendsday
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:51:15 PM)
I feel very good about Lee.
phishhead (Jan 30, 2003 3:51:50 PM)
Duane: A while back some rumors were circulating about a riff b/t P. Burgess and his basketball coach, the man who helped push P.B. toward tsun and whose team he quit. Have you heard any other positives for the Bucks on this situation or is gone for good?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:52:34 PM)
Burgess is gone.
mc (Jan 30, 2003 3:52:58 PM)
Do you think Smith or Reynolds will offer immediate help? Also, if we get Crable, will he?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:54:38 PM)
I think Reynolds will depend on how he shakes the rust off. He has been away for awhile. Smith could. Crable would definitely.
AFAN (Jan 30, 2003 3:54:53 PM)
Duane, do you think Ted Ginn Jr. could commit shortly after signing day?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:55:38 PM)
I wouldn't be surprised if Ginn does. I have not been told that is the plan but it wouldn't surprise me.
ngsosu (Jan 30, 2003 3:55:50 PM)
what are your thoughts about recent moves concerning Pitt -- they seem to be attracting top assistants in lateral moves and are making an aggressive showing not only in Ohio recruiting but on the national level too...is walt harris that good? are on the verge of something big?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:57:27 PM)
I think Harris was always going to be a problem but right now there is some disarray. He is doing a great job here. He has Ohio connections and is a really good guy. A genuine guy. If Pitt can keep him they will be a problem in that key area of the state for years to come.
BuckNutty (Jan 30, 2003 3:57:56 PM)
Do you have any feeling about where Bush is gonna end up?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:59:07 PM)
I think Tennessee is a better QB situation but recently he seems to have swung back this way. I can't call it. I am going to try and call him tonight.
pazbuck (Jan 30, 2003 3:59:15 PM)
Duane is Hoyer a Buck lean?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 3:59:54 PM)
For right now. Slightly.
jj (Jan 30, 2003 4:00:23 PM)
Would you say winning the national championship helps this years or next years recruiting more. It didn't seem to have a large impact this year.
Kirk (Jan 30, 2003 4:02:06 PM)
Only a few more minutes... I'm going to post a few last questions shortly. I was going to stay after 4 but I will have to log off again today...
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:02:10 PM)
Great question. Fans think that is going to swing kids this year. That NEVER happens. It is too late in the process. The kids have had relationships with coaches and players at schools for some time. They are not going to change overnight. Next year and the year after is when it will have an impact.
So.Fla.Buck (Jan 30, 2003 4:02:30 PM)
Tony Gonzalez can flat out fly. 4.3 40 time. Was he used as a punt returner in high school if so do you see him doing it for the Bucks?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:03:25 PM)
I don't know if Gonzalez was used as a return man. I think that 4.37 is suspect. He did not show that kind of speed in track last year.
DenBuck (Jan 30, 2003 4:02:36 PM)
Do we still have a shot at McBride?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:03:45 PM)
I think McBride is out but we have seen him change his mind every other day.
mc (Jan 30, 2003 4:02:46 PM)
I read somewhere that even as well as Mangold and Sims played this year, Doug Datish could end up being the best of the group. Any truth to that?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:04:18 PM)
Datish was the highest rated and had a good fall. He could very well end up being the best.
pazbuck (Jan 30, 2003 4:03:27 PM)
Duane is Hoobler a candidate for an early offer and commit?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:05:02 PM)
I think Hoobler is very much in the mix early and would be a Buckeye lean.
hammer1159 (Jan 30, 2003 4:03:34 PM)
Duane, I almost feel that it would be best if these kids like Davis, Ginn Jr., etc would look around further before they commit. This way they are sure and we avoid the wavering back and forth that we had this year. What's your take?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:09:41 PM)
I think it depends on the kid. If there is any doubt they should look around. If there is no doubt, get it over with.
tresselvessel2003 (Jan 30, 2003 4:04:11 PM)
duane, what is the deal with McClover, is he gonna come or not????
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:06:01 PM)
I am not feeling confident about McClover. He has wavered twice and it is late in the game.
pazbuck (Jan 30, 2003 4:04:23 PM)
what's happened to Penn State's recruiting in Ohio? Has Joepa's age hurt them?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:05:13 PM)
Penn State's remote location, lack of social life and the fact that JoePa won't play young kids has hurt more.
ronbuckss (Jan 30, 2003 4:05:36 PM)
Duane, Ohio talent is very rich next year however, after winning a national title won't those dividens start to pay off in Florida, Texas California, NewJersey ie the "speed states"?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:06:03 PM)
it will definitely help nationwide. No question.
Kirk (Jan 30, 2003 4:06:11 PM)
Seabus (Jan 30, 2003 4:06:26 PM)
For someone that knows more about Buckeye football than me, if Bush comes here will the battle for the 04 starting QB spot be the most scrutinized position battle ever at OSU?
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:07:31 PM)
I think it very well could be. With 2 highly rated QBs coming out of high school and the resurgence of the Buckeye program and coming off a national championship. It could get crazy.
mjw1200 (Jan 30, 2003 4:06:34 PM)
is marcus freeman going to be an immediate impact player if he comes here? i saw him play this year and he looked real tough, but he didn't look quite big enough to me
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:07:54 PM)
Freeman could be an immediate impact player.
Albin (Jan 30, 2003 4:07:02 PM)
Duane...Just got here. Sorry if you already talked about this. The whole Boeckman situation. It doesn't make sense. With the QB in Ohio next year...is this a case where they promised the kid a schollie...and just didn't want to break their word?
Kirk (Jan 30, 2003 4:08:14 PM)
Duane there is also a question from hammer1159 above
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:08:54 PM)
I think it could be with Boeckman. Apparently this has been in place for some time. That story is just now coming out. We will know more in time.
Kirk (Jan 30, 2003 4:10:10 PM)
Duane, thanks for joining us... we have to take off now, but I will turn the moderation off and you guys can keep chatting if you'd like. Thank you everyone for coming and setting a new record!
Hubbard (Jan 30, 2003 4:10:19 PM)
Duane (Jan 30, 2003 4:10:37 PM)
Gotta run. The phone is ringing now. Good talking with you Buckeye fans!!! See ya soon.
