Crunching Numbers: Minnesota at Ohio State

Some of the best and worst offensive and defensive units in the Big Ten get together this weekend when Ohio State plays host to Minnesota. Details about that, the series history, an impending milestone for Terrelle Pryor and more are included in this week's look at the numbers.

For all games, Ohio State is No. 1 in the Big Ten in one category: kickoff returns (25.9 yards per return). Buckeye kicker Aaron Pettrey leads the conference in scoring and field goals. Minnesota leads the Big Ten in punt returns (19.0 yards per return). Golden Gopher receiver Eric Decker tops the conference in receiving yards (104.4 per game). Looking only at conference games, Ohio State is No. 1 in points scored (28 per game) and rushing defense (74.5 yards per game).

Minnesota is 3-0 when scoring first this season and 0-3 when allowing a 100-yard rusher.

Four Golden Gophers call Ohio their native land: offensive linemen D.J. Burris of Kenton and Dominic Alford of Shaker Heights, punter Blake Haudan of Toledo St. John's and cornerback Ryan Collado of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.

Ohio State ranks in the top 25 national in five defensive categories: rushing defense (9th), scoring defense (11th), total defense (16th), pass efficiency defense (19th) and sacks (25th).

Buckeye running back Brandon Saine has averaged 5.5 yards per carry in Big Ten play, a mark that ties him with Penn State's Evan Royster for best in the conference among the league's top 10 rushers.

Ohio State is 10th in the Big Ten - next-to-last - in total offense (331 yards per game). Minnesota is 11th.

Ohio State is 11th - last - in the Big Ten in passing offense (174 yards per game). Minnesota is 11th in rushing offense (103.4 yards per game).

Minnesota has 18 Big Ten football championships, a total lower than only Michigan (42) and Ohio State (33). All but two of the Golden Gophers' titles came before the end of World War II. They last earned a share of the championship in 1967, at which point Ohio State had 12 titles.

Minnesota's stout pair of defensive tackles, Eric Small and Garrett Brown, have each started 25 games in their careers.

Terrelle Pryor needs two rushing yards to become the fifth Ohio State quarterback to rush for at least 1,000 yards in his career. He would join Cornelius Greene (2,066), Rex Kern (1,714), Art Schlichter (1,303) and Troy Smith (1,168).
