Kirk (Feb 4, 2003 3:40:20 PM)
Hi Duane, we're already lined up with questions

Kirk (Feb 4, 2003 3:40:37 PM)

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:40:48 PM)
Fire away.

AtlantaBuck (Feb 4, 2003 3:40:52 PM)
Will a kicker get a LOI tomorrow?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:41:50 PM)
I can't say. I think if we see a kicker get one that tells us something about where we are with the other last few kids.

hondo (Feb 4, 2003 3:41:58 PM)
Duane, how do you see it shaking out tomorrow?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:43:23 PM)
Lee to the Buckeyes even though I am concerned that I could not get him on the phone last night. That has not happened before but it could be simply because he wants to make his announcement, not because he is avoiding a Buckeye writer. I think Crable is too close to call but I think Ohio State. I say Bush to Tennessee.

BigBucksFan (Feb 4, 2003 3:43:46 PM)
Duane, where do you see Turk Mcbride going?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:45:54 PM)
McBride to the University of Mars. Nobody can call that one. He has changed his mind so much that I can't get a feel for where he is going. Miami was his lifelong favorite but drops them the week before his visit. Says Texas had a great shot at landing him then cancelled the visit and went to Florida. It goes on and on.

hondo (Feb 4, 2003 3:46:09 PM)
Duane, have you heard any more info on Crable, besides the phone call last night?

OzBuck (Feb 4, 2003 3:46:16 PM)
How can we look at the discussion Crable had with Tressel the other night on the phone? Can one conclude that this i, indeed, good new or might Crable be telling Tressel that he's chosen another school?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:47:58 PM)
Nothing new on Crable. Crable calling Tressel makes no sense unless he is still very much at least still considering Ohio State. I have learned that kids avoiding telling adults something they don't want to hear. The call to say I am going elsewhere is a myth. Besides, I can't think a call like that lasts an hour and I would have been told last night if the Buckeyes were out.

David (Florida) (Feb 4, 2003 3:48:11 PM)
Duane.......How firm do you think the commitment is from Fort Lauderdale's Stanley McClover?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:49:23 PM)
He keeps wavering and I don't like it. One bout of second thoughts is one thing. He has messed around with this on at least 2 occasions. I still think we get him but don't hold your breathe until we see his LOI.

buckaubs (Feb 4, 2003 3:49:38 PM)
Duane...what is going on between Dyches and Graessle? It doesn't seem to make sense does it?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:50:32 PM)
I was thinking about this last night and it does make sense. Nugent will be a junior. We saw what happens with freshmen kickers. Get one in here and get him seasoned.

BuckeyeSal (Feb 4, 2003 3:50:56 PM)
In a week or two do you see any of the juniors committing early? If so whom?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:52:05 PM)
I don't want to speculate about when. It causes too much trouble but Ted Ginn is the likely first verbal to this class.

BuckNutty (Feb 4, 2003 3:52:22 PM)
Do you see McClover having a press conference tomorrow as a bad sign for the Bucks or is it just a kid looking for a little attention on signing day?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:53:38 PM)
Too much is made out of press conferences. Before the early verbals started happening about 8 years ago press conferences were standard procedure. He gets to sit down in his hometown and get in the newspaper and on the news.

Oh8ch (Feb 4, 2003 3:54:02 PM)
With Schlegel the number could be as low as one. If we don't oversign, who gets it?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:54:52 PM)
I say Lee. Crable would be #2. OL is an even bigger need than LB.

mc (Feb 4, 2003 3:55:13 PM)
Does Schlegel count on this years class and where do you see him playing?

fortbuck 2 (Feb 4, 2003 3:55:15 PM)
how much PT and impact do you think Schlegel will have?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:56:39 PM)
It depends on how well he handles the year off. I did not see Schlegel but those that have have been unanimous in their praise. He looks like he could have an impact as soon as he is allowed on the field.

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:56:41 PM)
Schlegel is on this years total and will play the Mike.

hondo (Feb 4, 2003 3:56:48 PM)
Has Reggie Smith qualfied?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:57:23 PM)
Smith has not to my knowledge but that was some time ago. I need to check on that.

Heater (Feb 4, 2003 3:57:49 PM)
Project Stearns chances of suiting up in Scarlett and Gray, please. Thanks!!!!

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 3:58:32 PM)
I will believe Stearns is a Buckeye when I see it. I seriously doubt he leaves the west coast.

hondo (Feb 4, 2003 3:58:56 PM)
Duane, are there any new reliable scoops out there today?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:00:05 PM)
Nothing new. Nothing that is giving me any reason to think there is anything going on with any of the last few players.

Heater (Feb 4, 2003 4:00:14 PM)
Everyone wants to talk about class rankings and such. Obviously, injuries, coaching, etc is a tremendous factor in how a class shakes out...but if you're correct with assuming Crable and Lee to the Buckeyes...where would you rank us in the nation with that class?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:01:40 PM)
I think with those 2 we are looking at a top 15. I just can't rate a class with less that 20 players as a top 10 class unless every player is at least a top 20 national kid. I think top 15 with these numbers is a great class.

KGBUCK (Feb 4, 2003 4:01:48 PM)
Should we be concerned about the lack of O Line and RB's this year?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:03:46 PM)
Yes, we should be concerned. With OL it is another year where we have not seen the kinds of talent or numbers that we need to sustain what we have started. At RB, 3 is an absolute minimum. That is why Guilford could end up being the most valuable player in this class. Redshirt him but let him work at RB then move him next year.

mc (Feb 4, 2003 4:03:53 PM)
When are the LOI faxed out?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:04:59 PM)
I don't know the details about how the LOIs work. I have never studied the NCAA rules close enough.

toledobuck (Feb 4, 2003 4:05:06 PM)
Duane, what about Aaron Sears?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:06:18 PM)
Sears is a confused kid who doesn't know what he wants to do. 99% of those kids stay as close to home as possible.

KGBUCK (Feb 4, 2003 4:06:23 PM)
Anything on Mo Dampeer?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:07:29 PM)
Dampeer is not going to be part of this class. They don't feel like he will qualify, and even if he does, he can't sustain it. Same with Wheelwright.

AFAN (Feb 4, 2003 4:07:33 PM)
Duane, do we have anything to worry about Frost? I think we are fine, just wanted to get your feelings.

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:08:30 PM)
I think Frost is going to be fine. That is not one I am worried about. I am only really concerned about McClover of our verbals.

pazbuck (Feb 4, 2003 4:08:36 PM)
how many "extra" LOI's go out tomorrow? To who?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:09:35 PM)
Extra LOIs?

Kirk (Feb 4, 2003 4:09:35 PM)
I think he means oversigning

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:10:42 PM)
I don't see any except the players we are talking about right now. No surprises.

bluechip (Feb 4, 2003 4:11:00 PM)
Why so many greyshirts to marginal prospects. Won't this come back to haunt OSU next year?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:12:55 PM)
I think it depends on how many we have next year. There might be a couple to play with. I see 22 juniors but there could be more than 25. I need to sit down and take a look again. My problem with it is the same as yours. I don't like who we are doing it with.

Heater (Feb 4, 2003 4:13:11 PM)
I have heard GREAT things about Travis Tolbert!!! Will we sign him? (joking...trying to lighten your day)

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:15:15 PM)
Tolbert verballed the University of Mars.

nbuck (Feb 4, 2003 4:13:36 PM)
what is the minimum number of offensive lineman that you would like to see osu get next year and who is the best in ohio next year

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:14:44 PM)
At least 5 next year. Right now I see Ben Person and Brandon Braxton at the top of a large and talented crop of OLs. There could be 8-10 Big 10 caliber OLs in Ohio next year. I am not exaggerating.

Albin (Feb 4, 2003 4:15:02 PM) Tress in the same boat as us...just waiting to see who signs the LOIs and who doesn't?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:15:51 PM)
Since we are in the dead period, yes. He is sitting on pins and needles like we are.

artbytes1 (Feb 4, 2003 4:16:36 PM)
Just out of curiosity, how big an impact do the player "hosts" have on a recruit's final decision? What current players do you believe are effective recruiters?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:19:06 PM)
I have not been hearing about hosts as much. There doesn't seem to be a Shawn Springs or a Dee Miller right now who has a high number of "gets." I think they can have a nice impact. Not huge but they can show players around and make them feel comfortable. So many kids end up where they feel like they fit in and are comfortable. Look at James Lee with Rutgers in his final 3.

OzBuck (Feb 4, 2003 4:19:17 PM)
Do you think OSU will oversign this year?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:20:21 PM)
I really can't say. The last few kids have just shut up and are not talking so I can't get a feel for where we stand.

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:21:16 PM)
I know this is frustrating. I am frustrated too but they are not talking. They are not even answering their phones.

ronbuckss (Feb 4, 2003 4:20:45 PM)
Duane I just get the feeling lately that Lee wants to go to Florida if they have room. Have you felt this at all?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:22:51 PM)
As I said earlier, Lee not answering the phone for me is worrisome. He never really seemed to favor Florida though in our conversations. He knows he can play early here.

toledobuck (Feb 4, 2003 4:21:36 PM)
Duane, are you concerned about any of our other commits and their academics?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:23:05 PM)
There are a couple of unqualified kids but I think they all make it. No, I am not really concerned.

jjjhh (Feb 4, 2003 4:23:22 PM)
Which current recruit has the potential to be an upside surprise on the field, and which is most at risk for a downside surprise?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:24:26 PM)
Upside - Reggie Smith.

BuckNutty (Feb 4, 2003 4:23:28 PM)
Which of this year's recruits will make the biggest impact before leaving Ohio St.?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:25:05 PM)
Louis Irizarry will be the one who we remember from this class but watch Dareus "Superman" Hiley. What an athlete.

TotownBuck (Feb 4, 2003 4:23:35 PM)
Is Curt Lukens the real deal? Do you believe this is a case of a kid just wanting to be a Buckeye so badly that he will grow into a true impact player like Matt Whilhelm.

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:25:47 PM)
Lukens is a player. My contacts up there who have seen him more than I have say he is definitely underrated. One said that he is as good as Nickey right now.

artbytes1 (Feb 4, 2003 4:26:19 PM)
Last year, the sun, moon and stars all lined up in that Ohio had an extraordinary group of kids, most of whom were heavy leans to OSU and verballed (sp?) early. It seems that this year, the coaching staff has had to work much harder to get what the national pundits seem to think is a lower ranked class (in large part because the numbers are limited). I think, given these facts, Tressel and Co. have done maybe a better job this year than last. What do you think Duane?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:28:05 PM)
Add in preparation for the national championship game where we were a decided underdog and there is a strong argument for this being the better effort.

Zeek (Feb 4, 2003 4:29:01 PM)
Duane, do coaches generally know before signing day if a recruit has accepted their offer, even if the recruit is announcing publicly on signing day?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:30:17 PM)
I would not say generally but I think they know about half the time or better.

kyoilman (Feb 4, 2003 4:29:13 PM)
Did the staff have reservations about Ray Edwards, or did he not appeal to the staff? Why are we so weak in our recruiting efforts in SW Ohio?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:31:42 PM)
I think it was a matter of liking other players more than Edwards. When you look at McBride and Mario Williams and Tim Washington and Stanley McClover, Edwards is going to take a backseat. I suspect they "back burnered" him for the entire process.

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:34:07 PM)
SW Ohio just doesn't seem to be as Ohio State oriented as the rest of the state. We have now seen 3 staffs, Bruce, Cooper and Tressel who have not done well there so you can't say it is with the coaches.

pazbuck (Feb 4, 2003 4:32:10 PM)
will ant junior OL get offers before summer camp?

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:33:43 PM)
I can see Person and Braxton getting offers before camp.

Kirk (Feb 4, 2003 4:33:49 PM)
Duane's gotta log off... everyone can stay and chat after I turn off moderation, but before you leave... Duane, give your prediction again for tomorrow...

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:34:42 PM)
Lee and possibly Crable. One of the kickers could get in here.

Duane (Feb 4, 2003 4:35:22 PM)
Good chatting with you all again. Another great class. Wacky year, no question. See you all soon!!
