Bates (5-10 1/2, 185) was part of a loaded backfield in 2002 (one of the other players at RB was UCLA-bound star Maurice Drew), but he still racked up 747 yards on 70 carries and 15 TDs. He is a fine athlete, listing a 4.38 time in the 40, a 3.87 in the 20-yard shuttle, a 10.65 in the 100 m, a 310 bench and a 405 squat. His athleticism is utilized on the field too as he has seen time at defensive back (77 tackles, 3 INT as a FS) and has also caught some passes and returned punts and kicks. Jackie said he would definitely like to play tailback in college although he will be willing to play other positions.
Right now, many schools are in contact with Jackie, and Arizona and Oregon State have offered (although he said he wasn't interested in those two schools right now). Cal has also shown heavy interest. "They'd offer me, but they'd want an early verbal, and I'm not really ready for that now," Jackie said.
Jackie is still interested in Cal (it is the only campus he's been to so far and has met with Coach Tedford) though, and he also lists Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, UCLA, USC, and Texas as some of his favorites. Out of that group, he said he is interested in Ohio State, Michigan and Texas the most. "Leaving California is not really a problem," he said.
All those schools have contacted him at least via mail, and that is likely just the beginning. Jackie is not the only De La Salle player interested in Ohio State either; he said that star DB Willie Glasper (Student Sports All-American) and standout receiver Cameron Colvin like the Buckeyes as well. "We all plan on going to college together," Jackie said.
Jackie and De La Salle will likely be atop the national rankings once again this year, and the eyes of coaches from across the country will be on him and his team. You'll certainly hear more about this player in the coming months.
More from Jackie Bates:
On playing for De La Salle: "It's demanding... We go 11 months a year."
On the streak: "We don't really think about it... we prepare so hard throughout the week that we'll be fine if we play our hardest."
On Camps this year: "I'm planning on going to the Nor-Cal Nike Camp." He also talked about trying to go to the So-Cal Nike Camp but wasn't sure, and he also expressed interest in camping at Ohio State and Michigan but didn't know if he could get out there.
Who he'd like to hear from more: "Maybe Miami. I haven't heard much from them."
Player comparison: Hershel Dennis (USC RB). "We're built a lot alike... we're both slim and real agile... he's like a slasher... that's what I compare my game to."
