We will have a reporter at the Eagles second-round playoff game at Lowrey Field in Lubbock on Saturday to gain some insight on the subject following the contest. The Abilene High School Eagles and El Paso Coronado Thunderbirds kickoff at 2 p.m. on the West Texas Plains in the Class 5A Division II playoff game.
Sims, who has missed action since an ankle injury in the loss to crosstown rival Abilene Cooper on Oct. 29, is expected to suit up and could be available if needed. Sources informed us that the Abilene coaching staff would like to try to rest Sims for one more week before bringing him back. Last week Abilene barely survived without Sims, winning 31-28 over Arlington High School. Coronado ended Amarillo's season 27-13.
This season has been an injury plagued campaign for the 5-10, 195-pound Sims. He currently has 535 rushing yards with five touchdowns on 83 carries. He averages 6.45-yards per carry. He has 11 receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown. He also has a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to his credit.
In comparison, last season Sims rushed for 2,352 yards and 33 touchdowns. He caught 27 passes for 436 yards and five more touchdowns. He also had two kickoffs returned for touchdowns.
Again, we have conflicting reports out of Abilene on the status of Sims recruitment and the level of conviction in his commitment to Oklahoma State. Along those ends, we will have a reporter at the Abilene playoff game to verify the status of Sims recruitment.
