Competition Day Finals: Young vs. Dunn

STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State Cowboys football team's offseason workouts are coming to a close and one of the more celebrated aspects each year is the competition day activities supervised by associate athletic director for strength and conditioning Rob Glass.

The annual tournament features eight teams picked by the selected captains and coached by a different coach on the football staff.

Following Tuesday's activities, the competition is down to the "BCS National Championship" where it will be the team selected by defensive end Nigel Nicholas and coached by defensive coordinator Bill Young going against the team selected by All-American and Biletnikoff Award-winning wide receiver Justin Blackmon and coached by new wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn.

The "BCS Championship," as well as the matches for third, fifth, and seventh places, will be contested next Tuesday.

In Tuesday's semifinals the winners got to the title match in similar fashion as Team Young/Nicholas dominated Team Wickline/Rush. Team Young/Nicholas clinched it on the second matchup as safety Daytawion Lowe, who missed last season with a shoulder injury, got the honor of pushing the tire across the finish line. That team took an early lead in the competition when they dominated the pro agility station by a score of 11-5 and they never trailed as they also did well on the one-on-one tug station.

Members of Team Young/Nicholas include defensive end Nigel Nicholas, wide receiver Kenneth Johnson, quarterback Johnny Deaton, safety Daytawion Lowe, wide receiver Hubert Anyiam, cornerback Nehemiah Mundy, linebacker Tyler Johnson, linebacker Kris Catlin, offensive tackle Levy Adcock, defensive tackle Diamonte Wheeler, defensive tackle Jarid King, defensive tackle Andrew Smith, Daniel Cooley, and David Anwanwan.

The other matchup was decided well before the last rep too. Team Dunn/Blackmon ended up defeating Team Joe DeForest/Richetti Jones by a count of 37-25. It ended a two-year reign at the top of competition day for associate head coach Joe DeForest.

That match was close early, starting on the sled pull where Team Dunn/Blackmon paced by late strong pulls by offensive linemen DeJuan Davis and Jake Jenkins, took a 5-3 edge. Team DeForest/Jones came right back to tie the match on the tractor tire flip. Richetti Jones was particularly strong in the event. Like it was in the other semifinal, pro agility was where an edge was really established.

Members of Team Dunn/Blackmon include wide receiver Justin Blackmon, receiver Justin Horton, receiver Tracy Moore, receiver Charlie Moore, offensive lineman DeJuan Davis, offensive lineman Jake Jenkins, cornerback Jarod Fields, linebacker Tyler Fields, quarterback J.W. Walsh, center Casey LaBrue, defensive end Peter Okonofua, and cornerback Elliott Jeffcoat.

It's all in fun and a great team-building exercise but make no mistake it is very competitive and a lot of pride will be on the line next Tuesday.
