Top Emerging Players: No. 7 Caleb Lavey

We continue our list of the Top 10 Emerging Players for 2011. To be eligible for this list you either have to be a returning player that has never had any regular playing duty on the team, be a newcomer, or redshirt player that has yet to break into the lineup. The criteria is also need on the team, whether as a starter or in a critical spot on the depth chart.

No. 7 - Caleb Lavey, MLB
6-3, 238, So.
Celina, Texas

Take your pick, either Lavey or former pro baseball player Tyler Johnson is going to have to step in and take over at middle linebacker for the departed and outstanding Orie Lemon. Lemon was a leader and a fearless and dependable tackler with a team-leading 133 tackles last season.

In nine games last season after coming back from an injury, Lavey had 10 tackles, nine unassisted, while Johnson had eight tackles.

On the surface, Lavey may not be as athletic as Johnson but Lavey is a football gym rat and student of the game. He has incredible instincts and football IQ. He knows the position well and that counts for a lot with both defensive coordinator Bill Young and co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Glenn Spencer.

He also showed at Class 3A powerhouse Celina (Texas) High School that he knew how to tackle with more than 500 career tackles in high school. He was a two-time Texas All-State linebacker and in 2008 was the Class 3A Texas Defensive Player of the Year.

The accolades are put away now and it is time to prove what you can do at the college level. Oklahoma State badly needs to get good play out of the middle linebacker and that is magnified because there will be imexperience in front of the position with a lot of youth at defensive tackle and the weakside linebacker position is still unclaimed with the coaching staff hoping that junior college newcomer Alex Elkins can get it doen there. All that means middle linebacker needs stability and Lavey is capable of bringing that.

After spring it was close to a dead-heat between Lavey and Johnson, so now we look forward to seeing what preseason camp in August brings.
