OSU Commit Del Rio, Valor Drop Opener

Fellow powerhouse Bishop Mullen of Denver knocked off No. 1-ranked Valor Christian of Highlands Ranch on Friday night in a nationally televised internet match-up of top ranked teams in Colorado. The 14-13 Mullen win was the result of a fourth quarter touchdown drive that ended on a long pass play to snap Valor Christian's 25-game win streak. It was the debut of OSU QB commit Luke Del Rio at Valor.

Del Rio played well in what would have to be considered a conservative offensive game plan. Del Rio threw a slick touchdown pass for one of the Valor Christian touchdowns. He was 19-for-34 passing for 168 yards with one interception and one touchdown. He did have several passes that were dropped, but he also made some good decisions to throw a few passes away.

A missed extra point left Valor Christian with a 13-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. After Mullen took the lead early in the fourth quarter, the Valor offense was on the move but stalled at midfield after a run play on third-and-five.

Following the punt, Valor got the ball back again on a fumble recovery near midfield. After a Del Rio pass to his leading receiver Alex Ulmer resulted in a first down, Valor fumbled the ball back to Mullen on a play that must have been a read run in which Del Rio and the back failed to successfully communicate and the ball was loose for the Mustangs to recover. Mullen ran out the clock for the win.
