Brian Williams ruled out for 2012-13 season

Brian Williams walked onto the Homecoming & Hoops stage with a smile and an arm sling. The smile came when thousands of students cheered him on as he walked up the stairs toward the microphone. But these aren't happy times for the sophomore forward. Head coach Travis Ford said his starting small forward will be out for the 2012-13 season with a left wrist injury.

"From what I understand, he's going to be in a cast for three months and he needs another month, month and a half to rehab," Ford said. "We'll just get him a redshirt. No use in throwing him back out there. He has a medical redshirt left."

It wasn't easy for Markel Brown, a junior guard, to hear the news.

"Knowing he was going to be a starter, it's going to hurt bad," Brown said.

Williams, who injured his left wrist during practice, already has one redshirt under his belt, with a medical-redshirt still available.

"In four or five years, he'll be the oldest college basketball player in America," Ford said jokingly.

Last season, Williams averaged 9.6 points per game, playing the majority of his minutes during conference play after a number of injuries and transfers from the Cowboys' squad. Ford said there are a number of possible "candidates" to fill the small forward position, but will wait to name the new starter.
