Future Cowboys: Ateman, Del Rio Star In Wins

A few years from now it could Luke Del Rio and Marcell Ateman that Oklahoma State fans are talking about as the Cowboys prepare for Bedlam. If Friday night was any indication, OSU fans have reason to look forward to the future as Del Rio and Ateman were outstanding in leading their respective high school teams to playoff wins. Here's a look at how OSU commits did Friday in their playoff games.

MARCELL ATEMAN, WR (6-4, 190)
East High School (Wylie, Texas)
This week's game: Wylie East quarterback Garrett McCain only completed 13 of 29 passes on Friday night, but 11 of those attempts went to Ateman who made the most of them. The OSU commit caught 11 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns as Wylie East won a 63-56 shootout over Whitehouse in a Class 4A Division II bi-district playoff game. Ateman has touchdown receptions of 44, 36 and 28 yards, but it was Kevon Mack's 6-yard TD run with 41 seconds remaining that gave Wylie East the victory. Wylie East (9-3) advances to play Mesquite Poteet (10-2) in a Class 4A Division II playoff game. For the season, Ateman has 82 receptions for 1,561 yards (19.0 yards per catch) for 25 touchdowns.

LUKE DEL RIO, QB (6-2, 195)
Valor Christian High School (Highlands Ranch, Colo.)
This week's game: Del Rio and the Valor Christian Eagles were nearly perfect in Friday night's Class 5A semifinal game against ThunderRidge. The OSU quarterback commit completed 16-of-17 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns as Valor Christian rolled to a 49-3 victory and a berth in the state championship game against the winner of Saturday afternoon's game between Cherokee Trail (11-1) and Ralston Valley (11-1). Del Rio threw TD passes of 27 and 11 yards to Christian McCaffrey, and he threw scoring passes of 10 and 71 yards to Alex Ulmer. For the season, Del Rio has completed 167-of-235 passes (71.1 percent) for 2,186 yards and 28 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

Garrett became the Cowboys most recent commitment a few weeks ago. The huge offensive tackle will graduate in December and enroll at OSU for the spring semester.

This week's game: Ross caught five passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, and also had a 47-yard punt return in the first quarter to set up a field goal as John Tyler defeated Wylie 38-10 on Friday night in a Class 4A Division I area-round playoff game. Ross's 68-yard catch and run on a pass from quarterback Greg Ward gave the Lions a 17-3 lead late in the second quarter. For the season, he has 58 catches for 1,221 yards (21.1 average) and 18 touchdowns.

RA'SHAAD SAMPLES, WR (5-11, 170)
Skyline High School (Dallas, Texas)
This week's game: Samples was on the receiving end of five passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday in Skyline's 47-28 victory over Mesquite Horn in a Class 5A Division I area round playoff game. He caught a 57-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give his team a 14-6 lead, and then he added a 40-yard scoring reception on the first play of the fourth quarter as Skyline improved to 11-1. For the season, Samples has 52 receptions for 959 yards (18.4 yards per catch) and 22 touchdowns.

JORDAN STERNS, DB (5-11, 190)
Steele High School (Cibolo, Texas)
This week's game: Cibolo Steele improved to 12-0 with Friday night's 45-0 victory over San Antonio Roosevelt in a Class 5A Division II area-round playoff game. Roosevelt did not earn a first down until two minutes left in the third quarter.

VINCENT TAYLOR, DT (6-3, 270)

This week's game: Taylor and his defensive teammates were dominant as Madison recorded its first shutout of the season with Friday night's 24-0 victory over San Antonio East Central. Madison (10-2) advances to face undefeated Sharyland (12-0) in a Class 5A Division I area-round playoff game.

This week's game: Webster and his Atlanta Rabbit teammates saw their season come to an end Friday night with a 57-13 loss to Gilmer in a Class 3A Division II region semifinal playoff game. Webster rushed for a team-best 59 yards for the Rabbits, who finish with a 5-7 record. For the season, Webster rushed for 1,620 yards and 13 touchdowns despite missing several games with injuries.
