Future Cowboys: Sterns, Taylor Impress

If defense wins championships, than Cibolo Steele and Madison may have the inside track to a pair of Texas state titles. Jordan Sterns helped keep Cibolo Steele's perfect record intact with a punt return and interception return for touchdowns in this week's playoff game, and defensive tackle Vincent Taylor came up with the big plays to lead Madison's victory.

Here's a look at how the future Cowboys did in this week's playoff games (by the way, they won five of the six matchups).

MARCELL ATEMAN, WR (6-4, 190)
East High School (Wylie, Texas)
This week's game: Ateman's high school playing career came to an end Friday night as Mesquite Poteet used a field goal with 46 seconds remaining to defeat Wylie East 51-48 in a Class 4A Division II playoff game. Ateman had two catches for 21 yards, including a touchdown reception late in the third quarter for Wylie East (9-4). Ateman played in 13 games this season and finished with these numbers: 84 catches, 1,582 (18.8 yards per catch) and 26 touchdowns.

LUKE DEL RIO, QB (6-2, 195)
Valor Christian High School (Highlands Ranch, Colo.)
This week's game: Del Rio and the Valor Christian Eagles won the Colorado Class 5A state championship on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Cherokee Trail. Del Rio completed 12 of 20 passes for 89 yards in helping the Eagles to their 12th consecutive victory and fourth straight state title. For the season, Del Rio completed 179-of-255 passes (70.2 percent) for 2,275 yards and 28 touchdowns with just four interceptions.

FRED ROSS, WR (6-0, 180)
John Tyler High School (Tyler, Texas)
This week's game: Ross caught four passes for 55 yards, including a 28-yard catch and run for a touchdown to give his team its first lead of the game early in the second half, as John Tyler remains perfect with a 13-0 record following Friday night's 45-28 victory over Frisco in a Class 4A Division I regional. For the season, he has 62 catches for 1,276 yards (20.6 average) and 19 touchdowns.

RA'SHAAD SAMPLES, WR (5-11, 170)
Skyline High School (Dallas, Texas)
This week's game: Samples caught six passes for 73 yards but it was a Skyline interception at the goal-line with seven seconds remaining to preserve the 38-33 victory over previously undefeated Spring Westfield in a Class 5A Division I matchup. Skyline (12-1) advances to face Allen (12-1) in a Class 5A Division I quarterfinal game. For the season, Samples has 58 receptions for 1,032 yards (17.8 yards per catch) and 22 touchdowns.

JORDAN STERNS, DB (5-11, 190)
Steele High School (Cibolo, Texas)
This week's game: Sterns had a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter and added a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third period at Cibolo Steele improved to 13-0 with a 38-0 victory over Edinburg North in a Class 5A Division II region title game on Saturday.

VINCENT TAYLOR, DT (6-3, 270)
Madison High School (San Antonio, Texas)
This week's game: Taylor led an impressive performance with two quarterback sacks, including a first-quarter safety, as Madison defeated Sharyland 40-13 in a Class 5A Division I playoff game Friday night. Sharyland was undefeated and averaging 55 points per game but Taylor and the Mavericks held them to just 13 points and 264 total yards.
