Joseph Randle Says He's Entering NFL Draft

It's going to look different around the Oklahoma State coaching offices and the Cowboys locker room. Running back Joseph Randle announced Thursday morning to The Oklahoman that he had decided to enter the NFL Draft, and word leaked Wednesday night that Bill Young would not be returning as defensive coordinator.

Randle, the Cowboys' All-Big 12 running back who rushed for more than 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns during the 2012 season, met with Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy and running backs coach Jemal Singleton on Wednesday night to discuss whether to return to OSU for his senior season or enter the NFL Draft, sources told's Robert Allen.

Randle told the OSU coaches that he was leaning toward entering the draft but had made no decision, sources said. But that must have changed overnight as Randle sent a message on Twitter to The Oklahoman's Gina Mizell that he had "made my decision not to come back (to OSU)."

He posted the following Twitter message Thursday morning, "I've decided to pursue my dream of playing in the NFL."

Randle is expected to be selected in the second or third round of the NFL draft, according to most draft projections.

That leaves the Cowboys with only three running backs on their roster – senior Jeremy Smith, junior Desmond Roland and sophomore Caleb Muncrief – with one running back commitment in Corion Webster of Atlanta, Texas, expected to sign next month.

OSU is expected to actively begin recruiting at least one more, if not more, running backs.

Reports surfaced late Wednesday night that Young would not be returning for his fifth season as the Cowboys defensive coordinator. It is very likely that co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Glenn Spencer will be promoted to defensive coordinator.

Young was an OSU outside linebacker/defensive end in the late 1960s and has coached for the past 44 seasons, including two stints at his alma mater. He also has coached at OU, Tulsa, Iowa State, Arizona State, Ohio State, USC, Kansas and Miami (Fla.), in addition to spending the 2001 season at the defensive line coach for the NFL's Detroit Lions.

Spencer just completed his fifth season on Gundy's staff. He coached the Cowboys defensive line in 2008, and has coached the linebackers the past four seasons. He was promoted to co-defensive coordinator prior to the 2011 season.
