Two Cowboys Claim NCAA Wrestling Titles

Ten competitors were crowned individual champions at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday night, and two of those were Oklahoma State Cowboys. Jordan Oliver capped an undefeated season with a 3-1 decision over Jason Chamberlain of Boise State to claim the 149-pound title and Chris Perry captured a 2-1 tiebreaker win over Penn State's Matthew Brown to capture the 174-pound title.

Oklahoma State finished the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships in fine fashion. The Cowboys briefly led the team standings during Saturday's final night and they crowned two individual national champions, and they are popular champions.

Stillwater's own Chris Perry, a son of former OSU champion Mark Perry and his wife Kathy, who is John Smith's sister Kathy, won the 174-pound national title.

Perry did all the family proud when he rode out Matthew Brown from Penn State in the tiebreaker period and quickly escaped in the second half of the tiebreaker for a 2-1 tb victory and the national championship.

"It is a great feeling," said Perry afterwards. "All that work, it is ridiculous how much work I've put in."

It was Perry's first individual title and he is a three-time All-American. His win gave Oklahoma State the team lead ever so briefly until Penn State won two individual titles and clinched the team championship for the third year in a row.

Jordan Oliver closed out his Oklahoma State career making by capturing the 149-pound title. He jumped up two weights this season to claim his second individual national championship. Oliver scored a late takedown to break a tie match at 1-1 and win 3-1.

"That's a situation that Coach (Smith) has us work all the time, 15 seconds left, up by one or down by one and what is your best move," said Oliver. "I felt him go heavy and I set him up and them took advantage of it."

The Cowboys finish second in the team standings. It was a good season and one OSU wrestling fans should be proud of. The Cowboys are closing in on getting their 35th team championship but will need to wait at least another season. To see Perry and Oliver take victory was very satisfying.
