Lunt And Notre Dame? Watch And Wait

With the college football news breaking late Saturday that Notre Dame star quarterback Everett Golson, just a sophomore-to-be in the fall, is out at Notre Dame for (according to ESPN) an academic violation of some type comes renewed thoughts of former Oklahoma State quarterback Wes Lunt eventually landing at South Bend.

Most of the news on Lunt that hasn't just been made up has come out of his high school coach Derek Leonard of Rochester (Ill.) High School. That is because Lunt and his family and Mike Gundy agreed to not comment to the media on the transfer.

In the absence of those primary parties keeping with their "no comment" agreement, much of the media has gone to Leonard and apparently, according to a CBS Sports blog, the list of schools that Gundy intended to not release Lunt to immediately accept a scholarship also slipped out through OSU sources.

From our sources, this we do know. Lunt's intention is to go to school closer to his home, play in an offense that fits his skill set, and have a big chance for success and multiple seasons to be the quarterback in that offense.

He has visited Illinois and was said to be close to making that decision after his visit a week ago. A source that is on the staff at Louisville has said that the Cardinals are making a full court press to let Lunt know they would love to have him there. Teddy Bridgewater will be gone after this fall and Lunt could fall into line at Louisville.

That interest has pushed Louisville into a spot that Lunt originally thought would be Iowa. The first thought was either Illinois or Iowa.

Now with the news of Notre Dame losing Golson, expect Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly to make a renewed pitch to Lunt. Besides Tommy Rees, a senior, Notre Dame also has fourth-year junior Andrew Hendrix and recent early enrollee Malik Zaire on the roster. Lunt would be a huge get now for the Irish and their depleted quarterback depth chart.

In the words of a popular marketing pitch, "this changes everything." Add to the desperate need that Notre Dame is close to home and Gundy is ready to give a release and the Irish could be the perfect fit.
