Cowboys To Face Miami (Fla.) In NCAAs

The NCAA Baseball Selection Committee could have been cute and sent Oklahoma State to the regional in Raleigh, N.C., to face North Carolina State and Josh Holliday's dad, Wolfpacks associate head coach Tom Holliday. Instead Holliday and the Cowboys will travel to Louisville to face Miami (Fla.) in the first round of the double elimination four-team bracket.

Host Louisville (46-12) will open with Bowling Green (24-29). The Falcons are one of the highest RPI teams in the field at No. 202 on the simulated RPI as they qualified by winning the Mid-America Conference with a 7-0 win in the title game over Ball State.

The Cowboys (39-17() draw a team that faced one of the toughest schedules in the nation as Miami, Fla. (34-23) was No. 19 in the up-to-date simulated RPI.

The Hurricanes played their full ACC schedule which included top national seed North Carolina, who they beat in the series opener; Virginia Tech, who they beat in the series finale; Virginia, who they beat two out of three; Florida State, who they beat two out of three; Clemson, who they beat in the series opener, and Georgia Tech, who they beat two out of three.

Miami also played NCAA qualifying teams in Florida, Florida Atlantic, and Columbia. Combined in all those games against top 50 RPI teams they were 15-15 and against top 100 RPI teams they were 21-20.

Miami, Fla. was also 14-16 in ACC Conference play. The Hurricanes watched the selection show on Monday without their coach Jim Morris as the longtime head coach of Miami is fighting pneumonia.

The Canes are led offensively by senior outfielder Chantz Mack, who led the team with a .297 average. Freshman first baseman David Thompson hit .285 with a team-leading 14 home runs and 43 RBIs. On the mound, the Hurricanes have a couple of tough left-handed starters in Brian Radziewski (9-2 record and a 1.49 earned run average) and Chris Diaz (6-5, 1.75).
