OSU vs. Lamar: Key Matchups & Predictions

This is the latest home opener for Oklahoma State since 1998 when the Cowboys won road games at Kansas in searing heat and then at Tulsa in week two before coming home to host Mississippi State and get another win. The Cowboys actually won six games to start that season, so the week three home opener could be a good omen.

The two teams have never met but there is a connection as current Oklahoma State recruiting coordinator Johnny Barr once coached at Lamar when the Cardinals had a program previously. The born again Lamar program is in its fourth season as an FCS program playing in the Southland Conference. There's no hiding this. It is a game the Cowboys are overwhelming favorites.

Key Matchups OSU vs. UTSA
1. OSU cornerbacks Justin Gilbert and Kevin Peterson
vs. Lamar wide receiver Kevin Johnson

With Lamar being overmatched I decided to go with some of the interesting matchups involving former Oklahoma State players now playing for Lamar. I would say it is a good thing that Kevin Johnson and Joe Okafor weren't quoted in the Sports Illustrated series. That would be "dirty." I wouldn't want to be them if they had been quoted.

Johnson going against Gilbert will look like practices back in the day on the fields east of Gallagher-Iba Arena. Johnson has excellent speed as evidenced by his two kickoff return for touchdowns last season and his 13 touchdown catches last year and two already this season. Speed on speed and I can tell you Gilbert has the edge, but it will be a good battle with some extra motivation.
Advantage: OSU cornerbacks Justin Gilbert and Kevin Peterson

2. OSU center Jake Jenkins vs. Lamar nose tackle Joe Okafor
Okafor never really did a lot in his time at Oklahoma State and I'm not sure if he and Jenkins really ever crossed paths. Okafor has turned out to be a successful player, really plays hard and with a lot of energy.

Jenkins is identified by some of his fellow offensive linemen as the guy that has really come on to lead the line. His calls have been good and he is playing very physical. I like Jenkins over Okafor on strength and technique, which has been very good.
Advantage: OSU center Jake Jenkins

3. OSU wide receivers Tracy Moore, Charlie Moore and JhaJuan Seales
vs. Lamar cornerback Tyus McGlothen
McGlothen is the leading tackler on the Lamar defense, but that is really not a good thing. It means the 5-8 corner has had a lot of balls caught by his man or in his area. He is physically at a disadvantage against all of the Cowboys receivers. Look for J.W. Walsh to pick on McGlothen. All three of the receivers are 6-2, which means a six-inch advantage for all of them.
Advantage: OSU ride Receivers Tracy Moore, Charlie Moore, and JhaJuan Seales

Game Prediction
No. 11 Oklahoma State 59, Lamar 0
The Cowboys should be able to run the ball all they want against the Lamar four-man front out of a 3-4 look. Against the undersized secondary they will be able to throw.

Defensively, the Cowboys should be hungry and need to pay attention to quarterback Caleb Berry. He is playing well but the Cardinals aren't a dominant run team. Covering the receivers will be the biggest challenge for the defense. If you notice we also have freshman kicker Ben Grogan kicking first field goal of his career.
