Phillips Feels Good About Senior Season

Justin Phillips has been fairly quiet since he made a commitment late last spring to Oklahoma State. The 6-0, 200-pound speedy linebacker from Pearland High School is not much of a noisemaker except on the field. Phillips and his entire team at Pearland have done that so far in the 2013 season.

They opened up with a 49-0 win over Houston Madison and Phillips earned defensive player of the week honors with five total tackles, three unassisted tackles and a sack. Week two, the Oilers clobbered Fort Bend Kempner matching their week one total with a 49-0 win.

Last week Pearland was a 42-3 winner over Houston Memorial with Phillips making six assisted tackles, four unassisted stops and another sack.

"Yeah, it's going good right now," said Phillips. "We're 3-0 and our offense is averaging over 40 points a game and our defense has allowed one point a game. I've been playing good, making a lot of plays. We have a good defense. Our defensive line is all young guys but we have about seven seniors behind them on defense."

This is a bye week for Pearland as they will play Pasadena on Sept. 27 and then open up district play the first week of October.

As for his recruiting, Phillips was part of a large group of recruits, many from the Houston area, that saw the Cowboys beat Mississippi State 21-3 in Reliant Stadium. He says he keeps in touch with defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer. He also said he has paid little attention to the Sports Illustrated series that was out last week.

"No sir, I didn't read it at all," said Phillips. "I got some of it from watching ESPN, but it doesn't impact me at all. I am still committed to Oklahoma State.

"I keep in touch with coach Spencer. That game was really fun and there were a lot of recruits there. I know some of them from camps and photo shoots, but I'm still getting to know those guys."

Right now, Phillips is all about what's up with the Oilers and winning.

"Yeah, this is fun right now and we want to keep it up," said the talented linebacker.
