Spring Practice: Cowboys Get Physical

STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State Cowboys have a full week of four practices with Monday being the first following Saturday's fan event. With limitations on depth at linebacker and experience on the offensive line, the Cowboys held the Orange Blitz. With rain and storms off and on outside, the Cowboys got physical on Monday with a two hour-plus practice in the Sherman Smith Indoor Training Center.

"We had a good practice today. We extended them somewhat and we had a physical practice," head coach Mike Gundy said. "We had some young players make some plays, so I thought today was productive."

Gundy was also asked by Athletic Media Relations staff to look back and give his postscript on the Orange Blitz.

"Most people thought it went really well," Gundy voiced. "If we were going to critique ourselves – less individual period, maybe 10 minutes instead of what would be 30 – but they liked the seven-on; they liked the inside drill. It gave them a chance to see some players compete that wouldn't really get the chance to compete in a live drill.

"I'm looking forward to next year, to really creating a game day atmosphere, tied in with the combine atmosphere," continued the head coach. "We'll have our new media station done here. We'll be able to show live video and a live mic. We didn't have that capability this year.

"They're going to be finished with our new media center, so we would like to have a practice or part of a practice and then we can have interviews on the field, maybe with players as its going on talk about things; coaches, have some seven-on and then have a spring game.

"I think we'll do some things next year that will be a little bit unique. There may even be some people around now that carry a live mic on the field like we did. I don't know that anybody else has ever done that before. We're going to try to do some new things in the future and make it interesting for the fans."

The Cowboys have three more practices this week before the spring is complete. You can bet that they will continue to be physical.

Gundy wants to ingrain a definite degree of toughness in his young football team. That is something the Cowboys of a year ago had and in some cases were able to pass down, but with so many red-shirt freshmen and straight newcomers that did not have as much exposure to the Calvin Barnetts, Daytawion Lowes, and others, it is something that needs to be done in the spring.

"Same things. Young players get in there and compete. We've got a few guys that are banged up," Gundy concluded. "We'll have to finish with some more younger players. We'll get them in and compete and try to find out what they can do, because those guys will have to help us during the season next year."

Again, practice will be held Tuesday, Thursday and Friday before spring practice is completed.
