Newsome recaps visit to UCLA and USC

Aledo (Texas) wide out Ryan Newsome spent the last two days in Los Angeles visiting UCLA on Monday and USC earlier today.

Ryan Newsome, one of the most electric receivers in the nation made the road trip from Texas along with his parents, brother and sisters for a family vacation.

"We drove straight through, got here in 24 hours," Newsome said. "We got in late Sunday night, rested up and then I spent the whole day Monday at UCLA and all day at USC on Tuesday. I loved both trips and had an incredible time, they're both great schools."

Newsome first checked out UCLA, a school he said has been recruiting him as hard as anyone.

"I love that staff, that's what really stands out to me about UCLA," Newsome said. "Coach Mora is personally recruiting him, he's the one head coach I talk with more than anyone. I love that guy, he gets me fired up every time we talk but it's not just him, I talk with the whole staff.

"When I got to UCLA, the whole staff was waiting for me along with some of the players. Brett Hundley was there to greet me, Eldridge Massington and a few other guys so that was cool, meant a lot to me. It felt like an official visit at UCLA, I did a little of everything.

"I met with the academic people first, toured the campus and sat down with the coaches and discussed my role in the offense. Coach Yarbs (Yarber), he's an amazing coach and a great guy. He spent a lot of time in the NFL, the whole staff has NFL experience and he and Coach Mora told me they know what it takes to get a player to that next level."

Newsome said the staff made it clear what kind of impact he could have in their offense.

"They were so organized," Newsome said. "We sat down and watched film, first they would show a clip of me, then show a clip of their offense and how I would fit in. They told me they really needed a speed guy, a game breaker type to play in the slot and said I would be perfect for that role and I'm the top guy on the board.

"The guys on the team were great with me and Eldridge hung out the whole time. It was my first time meeting him but it felt like we've known each other forever. He and Hundley invited me back to come hang out on Wednesday but I have a visit set up with Oregon already. Overall, it was a great visit and it really couldn't have gone any better."

On Tuesday, Newsome headed cross town and spent the entire day at USC.

"I loved it at USC as well," Newsome said. "Growing up, I wasn't really a fan of any particular teams, I just loved football so of course I loved watching USC. I remember watching guys like Reggie Bush, Taylor Mays and Dwayne Jarrett and just being a fan of their style of play.

"USC offered me two months ago so they haven't been recruiting me as long as some other schools but I'm developing a real good relationship with Tee Martin, the WR coach and Coach Wilson, who recruits Texas.

"I actually got my first ever recruiting letter from Coach Sirmon and Coach Sark when they were at Washington so I feel really comfortable with the staff. Coach Martin especially is a real good guy and made me and my whole family feel at home. I definitely felt a strong connection with him and the rest of the coaches as well."

Newsome said walking around the campus and touring the facilities was another highlight.

"The facilities were incredible, it was exactly what you would expect at a school like USC," Newsome said. "Everything was top of the line and I really liked the weigh room. There's so much tradition at USC and you can feel it walking around the campus.

"They have produced so many great players and Coach Sark and Coach Martin told me how well I would fit in with what they do and how they like my character on and off the field. Both visits were great, I couldn't say which one was better, they're both great schools and I'm strongly looking at both schools."

Newsome said he has no plans to make an early decision and wants to take all of his official visits before committing anywhere.

"My faith is really important to me and I'm just going to rely on God to help through this decision," Newsome said. "I want to take my visits to make sure I'm doing the right thing, I don't want to commit early, have second thoughts and then have to de-commit and leave a school hanging.

"Right now, I have visits set with Notre Dame for (Sept. 6) when they play Michigan and UCLA (Oct. 11) when they play Oregon. Those are two big time games and I can't wait to get there and see the atmosphere.

"I'm also going to visit Oregon officially and USC is another possibility. After that, I'm not sure where I'll go, there's still a lot of schools I'm considering."

Close to home, Texas remains a strong possibility for Newsome as well.

"That's really the only in-state school I'm looking at," Newsome said. "I know everyone keeps saying I'm going to Texas or I'm a lock to go there but honestly, I have no idea where I'm going right now, I really don't have a leader.

"I like Texas and I have a great relationship with Tommie Robinson. I've actually known him since I was three, he's like a second father to me. Saying that, I'm open to all the schools that are recruiting me and I really need to play this process out, pray about it and then just follow wherever I feel the Lord is leading me."
