Spencer, Others Receive Pay Increases

Oklahoma State saves a big chunk of money on its football coach's salaries for this upcoming year with the departure of offensive line coach Joe Wickline, who left to join Charlie Strong's staff at Texas with Wickline serving as "offensive coordinator." OSU is spending money in raises on the football staff salaries and Glenn Spencer is deserving as his defense made strong improvement last season.

Spencer jumps from a salary of $462,000 last year to becoming the second highest paid assistant of the Mike Gundy era this year at $550,000.

Remember, Wickline was making right at $600,000 last season and new offensive line coach Bob Connelly sensibly comes in at a much lower salary of $275,000.

Also, head coach Mike Gundy, who has his salary dictated by the contract he signed following the 2011 season, will see his salary go from $3.45 million last year to $3.5 million this coming year.

In my opinion, the best aspect of the salary structure for football at Oklahoma State is that they are based on achievement. Mike Yurcich in his second season as offensive coordinator came in at $400,000, a significant jump for him from Shippensburg State.

He is at the same salary as he continues to progress in his role at the higher Division I level. The offense in numbers, took a step back last season, but there were personnel reasons for that and Yurcich will tell you he is growing as a coach and adjusting to a different level and a different region of the country.

While some sources reported that all of the staff received raises, we were informed by a couple of Cowboy assistant coaches that was not true. We believe the following information now to be accurate after doing some further investigation.
