OSU Preview for Nike's The Opening

The third edition of the premier recruiting evaluation and reward event in the country, Nike's The Opening, begins in Beaverton, Oregon on the Nike campus on Tuesday. It will bring together over 140 of the top prospects in the nation, including Oklahoma State commit Jaylon Lane, along with 19 of the top quarterbacks in the country that will be competing in the Elite 11 finals.

Scout will have 15 of its recruiting analysts and recruiting reporters in Oregon to provide updates and notes on the scene, the action, and the happenings in and around The Opening. This will include updates on the players Oklahoma State is most interested in.

Here is a brief look at the prospects that are there for The Opening. Oklahoma State has no quarterback prospects involved in the Elite 11, although they did offer several that are including Houston commitment Ben Hicks out of Midway, Texas, Missouri pledge Drew Lock out of Lee's Summit, Mo., Michigan commitment Alex Malzone from Brother Rice in Michigan, and UCLA commitment Josh Rosen out of St. John Bosco in the Los Angeles area.

Here is a list of skill players and linemen attending The Opening that have OSU offers and are either interested or committed to the Cowboys.

Jaylon Lane, CB

Nacogdoches, Texas
Here's the guy that Mike Gundy is hoping goes to Oregon and spreads the Cowboy cheer to his fellow prospects at The Opening. Committed players are always looking to draw in fellow standouts to their school.

Lane is a great size for a corner and it will be fun to see him match his skills with some top receivers. He had 46 tackles and five interceptions last season and turned down a lot of schools to commit to Gundy and the Cowboys.

He will play for Team Apocalypse at The Opening. Louisiana cornerback prospect Xavier Lewis, scheduled to make his commitment announcement at The Opening, will be a teammate.

Kris Boyd, CB
6-0, 180
Gilmer, Texas
A two-way player at small school powerhouse Gilmer, Boyd has offers from Oklahoma State, LSU, Florida State, Texas A&M, and Texas among others. Scout ranks him as a premier cornerback prospect. He will play on Team Fly Rush during the 7-on-7 competition at The Opening.

Porter Gustin, LB
6-5, 235
Salem Hills, Utah
A premier athlete that is also a standout baseball pitcher, Gustin was offered by Oklahoma State this spring after defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer sat in the stands and watched him pitch. He will play on Team Apocalypse at The Opening. His offers also include Florida State, Ohio State, USC, UCLA, and Notre Dame.

K.J. Hill, WR
6-1, 190
North Little Rock, Ark.
Last season he caught 83 passes for 1,210 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for another four scores. Oklahoma State was one of the first to offer and Arkansas, Auburn, and Alabama are among those that joined in. He will play for the Land Sharks in The Opening.

Plano (Plano West), Texas
A jumbo running back, Jamabo is still very athletic and had one of the best SPARQ tests at the Dallas NFTC in April. He has piled up offers after a 1,077-yard season with 10 touchdowns. Oklahoma State has not offered, but he has always been under consideration for the Cowboys. He will also play for Land Sharks at The Opening.

Tyron Johnson, WR

New Orleans (Warren Easton Charter), La.
He's a big wide receiver that has run a 4.52 in Nike SPARQ testing as the NOLA NFTC. Last season he had over 1,300 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. Oklahoma State has offered and is hoping to land Johnson. He is another Land Shark in The Opening.

Christian Kirk, WR

Tucson (Saguaro), Ariz.
Kirk is an impressive athlete that has a 40-5 vertical jump. He had 1,989 yards in total offense last season and 34 touchdowns, half of those receiving and half rushing. He qualified in LA and he has a ton of offers including Oklahoma State. He will play for Vapor Carbon at The Opening.

Reserve (East St. John), La.
A top cornerback prospect in Louisiana, Lewis was all-district and honorable mention all-state last season. LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are his final four and he will chose at The Opening. He will team with Oklahoma State commitment and fellow corner Jaylon Lane playing for Team Apocalypse.

A speedster with lots of explosion and a 4.15 shuttle time in the SPARQ testing Newsome has a lot of offers including one from Oklahoma State. He will play for Alpha Pro at The Opening.

Manassas (Stonewall Jackson), Va.
One of the very best defensive tackle prospects in the nation, Settle visited Oklahoma State in April. He has the Cowboys on his top 11 list along with some of the best football schools in the nation. He is on Vapor Carbon at The Opening.

Kendall Sheffield, CB
5-11, 180
Fort Bend (Marshall), Texas
He had a 4.09 shuttle and a 41.7-inch vertical jump in SPARQ testing. He has a ton of offers. Oklahoma State is among his offers. He will play for Fly Rush.

Will Sunderland, DB
6-2, 189
Midwest City, Okla.
The only Oklahoma high school player participating at The Opening this year, he is the best prospect in the state with all kinds of offers including Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Ohio State, Florida, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Auburn. Last season he had 98 tackles and six interceptions. He will play for Alpha Pro at The Opening.
