J.W. Walsh continues to lead the quarterbacks and the offense. Jhajuan Seales is leading the wide receivers, Desmond Roland directing the running backs, and Daniel Koenig leading the offensive linemen. On the defense it is James Castleman directing the defensive line, Ryan Simmons overseeing the linebackers, and Kevin Peterson and several others including Ashton Lampkin leading the defensive backs.
I liked the way the quarterbacks threw. My guess is the arms of Walsh, Mason Rudolph, and Daxx Garman may have been rested and refreshed after the extra time off over the holiday weekend.
There was lots of pat-n-go, seven-on-seven, and then full 11-on-11 team. Seales, Austin Hays and Ra'Shaad Samples all looked good catching the ball. Tyreek Hill worked mostly at running back but he caught a few passes out of the backfield.
It was really hot down on that turf and by the time it was over a lot of the players had ditched the black workout t-shirts.
During the second session of the summer school the metabolic workouts increase from two a week to three. Work with the strength staff continues on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday morning for stadium steps and full lift. The meeting time with coaches continues too.
"Yes, we're taking advantage of it and meeting regularly and testing them," wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn said of the meeting time each position coach gets with his players. "It has been a nice advantage for us and I'm sure for the rest of the coaches around the country to bring the young kids in and really get them started. That is where you benefit the most is getting those freshmen and having one-on-one contact with them earlier than we have in the past."
Report day for the entire squad will come later this month on July 31. Until then the summer work continues.
