Big 12 Media Days: What We Hope To Find Out

The Big 12 Media Days in Dallas start bright and early Monday morning. There is at least one thing I want to try to gain out of each team that will be there. Some are bigger mysteries and questions than others. With some teams there are multiple nuggets of information that I will be hoping to obtain.

You have to filter the usual coach speak and player speak, but if you ask direct questions then you usually will get some direct answers. I spent about five hours Saturday; sandwiched around mowing the backyard, making a trip to Walmart, and grilling some hamburgers this evening, on homework for the Monday and Tuesday sessions.

Here is what I am most looking for from each of the Big 12 teams.

Oklahoma State
How will they navigate the APR practice penalty? Will it be by eliminating that Sunday workout like we thought? How did the chemistry develop this summer? What are the options at linebacker and is Devante Averette really as close as I've heard?

What will the Bears do at linebacker and how confident are they in the back end of the defense? Does Art Briles believe that if his team finds a way to beat OU in Norman that their schedule is strong enough to get them in the College Football Playoff?

Why did Charlie Weis hire former OSU grad assistant and Rice offensive coordinator John Reagan as offensive coordinator? Why did he name Cozart the starting quarterback after spring and is it still a good thing that he did?

How is Gary Patterson enjoying the Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie-led offense? Will practicing against the no huddle spread help that TCU defense? Who will quarterback the Horned Frogs and does the freshman Foster Sawyer have a chance to be the guy?

Texas Tech
What will the Red Raiders do for a back-up quarterback? How is Kingsbury feeling about the all new secondary he will tow into Big 12 play? Can Texas Tech beat somebody from the upper half of the conference?

What are the Sooners going to do at running back? It is a good question. Will Zach Sanchez live up to his press clippings or is he still going to be a Jeckyl-Hyde at corner? Bob Stoops' outward attitude is a great window into how good the Sooners truly are. When he is really cocky, they may not be so good. When Stoops is overly friendly and looks like he is enjoying himself with the media then watch out.

Iowa State
What does Paul Rhoads think of the Mark Mangino show that he brought to town and is this the ultimate scenario of good coach-bad coach as in good cop-bad cop? Who gets to quarterback the Mangino offense?

West Virginia
How hot is the seat that Dana Holgorsen is sitting on? What is truly the biggest hardship for West Virginia in trying to compete in the Big 12, is it recruiting and geography?

Kansas State
Who will play running back? It's an even bigger question in Manhattan as Bill Snyder's offenses need a solid back or better. If they end up with one then Kansas State has a chance to compete with the top two in OU and Baylor.

I'd ask but I think we know who will play quarterback. Who will call the plays? Yes, I'm going to ask. On defense, other than Diggs and Reed, who will be the big playmaker? What kind of summer have Jordan Hicks and Steven Edmond had and can they be healthy all season long? Are the players happy about Charlie Strong or are they missing Mack Brown?
