Cowboys fans had better prepare themselves to witness a player that their team will have to deal with for the next four years or four of the next five years in McAlester quarterback Dalton Wood. Wood is 6-5, 260 pounds and he is a beast.
It's amazing that the Buffaloes lost the game with this guy playing for him. Oklahoma State and OU both started in on recruiting Wood earlier this fall, and it was OU that offered first and gained the commitment. Wood is also a standout baseball player with draft potential and Cowboys fans may want to contact their favorite pro baseball scout and encourage them to push for drafting Wood.
In the game, he ran for five touchdowns and threw for the other two that McAlester scored. Wood ran for a 99-yard touchdown where the big fella just ran threw and then outran some pretty quick guys in the MacArthur secondary. I would guess that Wood at that huge size still runs a low 4.7 or high 4.6 in the forty.
He also threw the ball well, but the word is OU has tight end or linebacker in mind for him. He could end up being a pass rushing defensive end. Now when you read this stat you will say go ahead and line him up in the backfield. Unofficially, we had him at 28 carries for 403 rushing yards with the touchdowns coming from 99, 14, 18. 21, and 10 yards. He also had runs that covered 46, 39, 34, 26, and 74 yards.
His counterpart in the game, Lawton MacArthur quarterback Will Collins is a 6-2, 195-pounder who is an excellent student and is a good enough athlete that he can run and he has a good arm. He is committed to Louisiana-Monroe, but it is a crying shame that Tulsa did not work harder to keep him in the state as the son of an Army Colonel would be perfect in that Golden Hurricane offensive system.
Collins threw for the game winner to our standout discovery on the night in speedy wide receiver Lorenzo West. The four-yard score on fourth down in overtime set up the game-winning extra point after Lawton Mac had blocked the extra point on McAlester's touchdown following the Dalton Wood touchdown run.
Collins finished by our count with 34 of 42 completions for 333 yards with four touchdown passes and just one interception. Collins also scored on a 12-yard touchdown run and he had 16 carries for 79 rushing yards.
It was absolutely a fantastic game and it's always great when you discover a legitimate recruiting prospect. But it was tough to view Dalton Wood with my own two eyes knowing that he will be wearing an OU uniform in the future.
