Breaking Down The Recruiting Class

Here is a rundown of Oklahoma State recruiting as we see it with the dead period continuing until Jan. 15, which is right ahead of what will be the largest and most important recruiting visit weekend for the Cowboys. This week, the OSU coaches are taking some time off, although the coaches are still responsible for contacting their recruits, both the committed players and active recruits.

The first list below is the best one. These players are signed, or at least in the case of John Kolar, who recently played in the Semper Fi All-American Game, has signed a financial aid agreement and all are set to be on campus for the spring semester.

The transfer from Alabama-Birmingham in starting offensive tackle for the Blazers this past season Victor Salako and defensive tackle Motekiai Maihe from Tyler J.C. Both participated in bowl practices in Stillwater before the team left for Arizona. Both looked really good in their practice work.

Now in figuring out the 25 limit on incoming players, I do believe that Oklahoma State can count three of the players in this group back, and that means four would count toward the 2015 class.

Signed or Committed Players/
Transfers for Spring Semester (7)
John Kolar, QB, 6-4, 188, Norman (Norman North), Okla.
Todd Mays, QB/Ath., 6-0, 200, East Mississippi C.C./Olive Branch, Miss.
Brandon Pertile, OT, 6-5, 300, Mesa C.C., Ariz./Georgia State/Clearwater (Countryside), Fla.
Matt Kellerman, OL, 6-6, 300, Butler C.C./Centerville (Prairie View), Kan.
Victor Salako, OT, 6-6, 315, UAB (transfer)/Huntsville (Grissom), Ala.
Motekiai Maihe, DT, 6-4, 300, Tyler J.C./Pittsburgh, Calif.
Jordan Burton, S/LB, 6-1, 210, Kilgore J.C./Longview, Texas

The next group of players are those that are committed to sign on Wednesday, Feb. 4, and make up the balance of the recruiting class. That incoming number would be 21 after counting four from the players listed above. Many of the players on this list will be visiting officially on that Jan. 16 major visit weekend. I count Wilson, Jones, Bakari, Henry, Balous, and McClesky on that list.

Here again is where it is important to note that running back is a priority for the remaining 12 possibilities in the recruiting class. I also think you could see some additions along the way.

Chris Carson is a primary objective as he could bring instant maturity to the position coming from Butler County C.C. Carson rushed for 974 yards and 9 touchdowns this past season and averaged 7.2 yards per carry. He also caught two touchdown passes.

Chris Warren and Aca'cedric Ware both rushed for over 2,000 yards as seniors and led their teams deep into the Texas high school playoffs with Ware's Cedar Hill team winning a championship. Stevenson is a back that has speed and power and Dauphine was the state 200-meter champion as a junior.

A very intriguing prospect is Warren's teammate at Rockwall in Xavier Castille (pictured above). He is listed as a wide receiver/athlete and you may want to star the athlete designation. Check this out as he was 3-for-3 passing for 67 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 638 yards and seven touchdowns on 66 carries with a 9.7 yards per carry average. Then he caught 91 passes for 1,622 yards and 19 touchdowns. That is an extremely productive player.

Darrion Daniels has long been a major target of the Cowboys on the defensive line. Same would go for Jalin Barnett of Lawton and I think Oklahoma State has a good opportunity there. He was at OU on his official visit for Bedlam and seemed pleased Oklahoma State won.

You'll notice Dahu Green is listed and I believe that if he can improve his academic situation and show he's a qualifier that I think Oklahoma State might jump in on him.

It will be a very interesting January and first few days of February.
