Last weekend Starkel was a show stealer on his interviews and really hit it off with the TV host for the weekend in Elite 11 veteran coach and counselor Yogi Roth. Roth recounted his feelings about Starkel.
"If he were my age, this is a guy that I would want to hang with," Roth said. "He is into a lot of different activities and he isn't one of those guys that is always a football player. I thought his involvement in theater was cool.
"He is also all about including everyone around him and making them important. These guys are all alpha males but they have to be leaders and I can see Nick being very effective at including and bringing everyone in the huddle together."
Starkel found out on Tuesday that he made the finals of the Elite 11 and will be traveling again in early July to Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon for the Elite 11 Finals that are part of Nike's The Opening with some of the best high school football players in the country displaying their athletic ability and skills.
"When it got to Nick's name, it was a home run," Roth said of the discussion in the Elite 11 war room in deciding who would be invited. "Everyone spoke up for Nick and how he had to be one of the finalists. I think he will be in the running for the MVP and the top quarterback in the country, at least from our competition."
So why is Starkel not only coming to Stillwater on Sunday for the camp but also participating and throwing in the camp?
"I want to throw to the receivers and I think I might be able to help convince some guys to join in," Starkel said hinting at wanting to recruit and encourage talented players to join in and be part of a class of recruits he has already committed to.
Starkel is likely to be joined by one of his high school targets at Liberty Christian in Argyle, Texas as Justus Lee is likely to make the trip to Stillwater. Lee was also at a satellite camp last week that OSU coaches guest coached with Mary Hardin-Baylor's staff. Lee is 5-11, 185 pounds and can run a 4.5 and change in the forty. Watching on tape you can see where Starkel and Lee have a strong on-the-field connection going.
There is no doubt that having Starkel at the camp will make things a little more lively on Sunday in Stillwater.
