Mid-Summer Preview: Texas Tech

I realize that I will be giving up any chance I have for running for any office in Lubbock, Texas, from mayor to garbage collector with this preview. But I have to be honest as I really believe that Texas Tech is slipping further back and that it is a situation that is far from a one-year fix.

I think it will take time and my biggest concern about the Red Raiders is whether the talent coming in the past two seasons in recruiting is as good as the talent graduating. Breiden Fehoko is the real deal on the defensive line, and I'm a huge fan of the abilities and the speed of Port Arthur, Texas running back Corey Dauphine. After that, I'm not sure about the top to bottom when it comes to Texas Tech recruiting.

I know they are high on Patrick Mahomes (pictured above) and what he did at the end of the season, and we will see how the competition goes between Mahomes and Davis Webb. The receiver position doesn't seem as strong to me, especially depth-wise, and head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who should be feeling a little heat underneath his office chair, had better take advantage of those three returning senior starters on the offensive line including Le'Raven Clark.

On defense, David Gibbs brings in his system and he is a simple guy defensively and that should help. It is a talent infusion on that side of the ball that the Red Raiders need most. They also need to maximize Pete Robertson at defensive end as he is a thorn for the offense.

All that said, I barely have the Red Raiders ahead of Iowa State and Kansas. No bowl for the third year in a row and that will make Kingsbury's seat really warm over the winter.

Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-8 and 2-7)
9/5 Sam Houston State - Red Raiders struggle early like they did last year with UCA in the opener but come on to win 42-28.
9/12 UTEP - It was a struggle last year in El Paso but not as much in Lubbock as Texas Tech prevails 34-14.
9/19 @Arkansas - This game is bad news as Arkansas is looking to prove a point and rev up to get some SEC wins, so Tech gets boiled in Fayetteville 35-17.
9/26 TCU - Last season the Frogs pasted Tech 82-27 and pride alone should propel Tech into a strong effort but it takes talent against TCU, 49-31 Frogs.
10/3 Baylor in Arlington, Texas - Texas Tech made that game their game of the season as it was a close loss in a shootout, same song, same result 56-45 Baylor.
10/10 Iowa State - Finally a breather after three toughies in a row as Tech wins 38-35.
10/17 @Kansas - A road trip that most teams can handle and Tech does as well with a 38-28 win.
10/24 @Oklahoma - OU has been good for Tech quite a bit, but not this time as Sooners win with their powerful run game 42-20.
10/31 Oklahoma State - Halloween in Lubbock and the Cowboys in orange and black come trick or treating and Gundy has the tricks 41-20.
11/7 @West Virginia - Dana Holgerson has a defense that knows this offense inside and out, but not much offense so WVU wins 23-21.
11/14 Kansas State - This is a game Tech should have circled and could win, but I have Kansas State holding on 28-26.
11/26 @Texas - Another game Texas Tech could have a shot at, but Gray runs up and down the field for a 34-31 win.
