Mid-Summer Preview: Kansas State

The "old man and magician of college football," also known as Bill Snyder, the head coach at Kansas State University, needs a quarterback. You know how we know? Because he is still looking, or at least he was when the Wildcats made Jonathan Banks out of Contra Coasta C.C. in California a late signee in May.

The word is Banks is athletic but struggles throwing. There is also heir apparent Joe Hubener, who played in the spring but has never started a game at quarterback ... even in high school.

The Wildcats also have sophomore Jesse Ertz and true freshman and talent Alex Delton, who arrived early in the spring. There are two other freshmen in Landon Root and Zach Davidson, but so far there is no concrete starter.

Two starting receivers return but their names are not Tyler Lockett or Curry Sexton. They are senior Kody Cook and junior Deante Burton. Running back has some options with Dalvin Warmack and Charles Jones.

The offensive line is stabilized by multiple talent Cody Whitehair and Boston Stiverson. That duo is slated to start on the left side. The right side returns too in Luke Hayes and Matt Kleinsorge, but they are not as experienced as NFL prospects Whitehair and Stiverson. If there was a quarterback, the picture would look pretty good.

On defense, tackle Travis Britz returns with defensive end Jordan Willis. Three-fourths of the secondary is back including the safety tandem of Morgan Burns at free and Dante Barnett at strong. Defense will be okay.

Snyder will need to find a new kicker and punter, but that won't be nearly as important as finding a quarterback. With a quarterback playing well Kansas State could easily finish in the upper division of the of the Big 12. Without a decent quarterback, every game will be a struggle for the Wildcats.
