Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich to interview with Tulane, reports indicate

Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich is reportedly interviewing for the Tulane University head coaching position early in the week.

Mike Yurcich may have been often criticized by Oklahoma State fans during much of his time as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State but Cowboys fans have praised him more this season as he took an offense with no conventional running game and had the Cowboys near the top of the Big 12. The Cowboys finished 10-2 and now look like thgey will play in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Outsiders have apparently noticed as Yurcich could be in New Orleans as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week and perhaps for an extended period as NOLA.com and the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper are listing Yurcich as a candidate for the open Tulane University head coaching job.

The Green Wave fired head coach Curtis Johnson, a former New Orleans Saints assistant coach, after a 3-9 season in Conference USA. That season closed with back-to-back losses against SMU (49-21) and host Tulsa (45-34). Johnson was 15-34 in four seasons at the helm of the Green Wave.

Tulane has been a tough job mostly, playing in the shadow of the hometown Saints and down the road in Baton Rouge, the LSU Tigers.

Other candidates listed in connection with the job include LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson and Baylor offensive coordinator and son of Baylor head coach Kendal Briles.

Yurcich is a native of Euclid, Ohio and came to Oklahoma State when Mike Gundy plucked him from Division II Shippensburg in Pennsylvania as Yurcich had coached record-setting offenses there. He followed the very popular tandem of Dana Holgorsen and Todd Monken, both who went on the be head coaches (Holgorsen at West Virginia and Monken at Southern Miss.), as the Cowboys offensive coordinator.

The OSU offense has averaged 39.1 points over Yurcich time here as they have scored 40 points or more six times and 50 or more point four times. This season the Cowboys were ranked high in scoring, total offense, and passing offense and efficiency.
